  • The heat/mass transfer characteristics on the plane tip surface of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. At the Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, heat/mass transfer coefficients are measured for the tip gap height-to-chord ratio, h/c, of 2.0% at turbulence levels of Tu = 0.3 and 14.7%. A tip-surface flow visualization is also performed for h/c = 2.0% at Tu = 0.3%. The results show that there exists a strong flow separation/re-attachment process, which results in severe local thermal load along the pressure-side corner, and a pair of vortices named "tip gap vortices" in this study is identified along the pressure and suction-side tip corners near the leading edge. The loci and subsequent development of the pressure- and suction-side tip gap vortices are discussed in detail. The combustor-level high inlet turbulence, which increases the tip-surface heat/mass transfer, provides more uniform thermal-load distribution.

  • In order to control the tip vortex cavitation occurring around the tip of a rotating propeller blade, researches on the propeller cavitation and blade tip vortex flows have been increased. In this paper, the propeller tip vortex flow for a blunt and sharp tips was studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. In numerical open water test, torques, thrusts, pressure distributions and vortex flows were compared for various rotating speeds. To consider a hull wake, the nominal wake was specified in inlet boundary condition. Pressure distributions and vortex flows with the hull wake were investigated for various propeller rotating angles. From the results, it was confirmed that the blunt tip propeller delayed the tip vortex flow.

  • Leakage flow through turbine blade tip gap causes strong leakage vortex near the blade suction side and induces large aerodynamic losses. In this study, the conventional plane tip and various squealer tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shape on the total pressure loss. Three tip gap clearances of 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.0% of blade span were tested. Flow measurement was conducted at one chord downstream from the trailing edge with a five-hole probe. Results showed that the leakage vortex was stronger than passage vortex and the mass averaged overall total pressure loss through the cascade was the lowest for suction side blade tip case. For all tested cases, the area averaged overall total pressure loss was increased as the tip clearance increased.

  • To test the effect of various pile tip shape series of model scale loading tests were carried out on test piles with special pile tips. Special pile tips were made using the 3D printer and were attached to the bottom end of the test pile for loading tests. The pile tips were made to have 30°, 45°, 60° inclined tips, as well as a rounded tip. The main objective of the test was to observe the effect of various pile tip shapes on settlement and penetrability of the pile. Moreover, a numerical model simulating the pile loading test carried out in this study was established and verified based on the loading test results. From this, the stress concentration around the pile tip was investigated. This will allow us to analyze the decrease of stress concentration around the pile tip which is the main cause of the pile tip damage during pile installation. However, modifying the pile tip shape will eventually increase the settlement of the pile. By estimating the degree of increase in pile settlement, the viability and the efficiency of the pile shape modification was judged. In addition, case studies on the effect of different pile tip shape and ground conditions on pile settlement and stress dispersion was conducted.

  • Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has become an indispensable tool in efforts to develop the next generation of nanoelectronic devices, given its achievable nanometer spatial resolution and highly versatile ability to measure a variety of properties. Recently a new scanning probe microscope was developed to overcome the tip degradation problem of the classic SPM. The main advantage of this new method, called Reverse tip sample (RTS) SPM, is that a single tip can be replaced by a chip containing hundreds to thousands of tips. Generally for use in RTS SPM, pyramid-shaped diamond tips are made by molding on a silicon substrate. Combining RTS SPM with Scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) using the diamond tip offers the potential to perform 3D profiling of semiconductor materials. However, damage frequently occurs to the completed tips because of the complex manufacturing process. In this work, we design, fabricate, and evaluate an RTS tip chip prototype to simplify the complex manufacturing process, prevent tip damage, and shorten manufacturing time.

  • The characteristics of tip vortex within a blade tip region were examined experimentally in various flow coefficients by the way of changing tip clearance and blade stagger angle in an axial Low Speed Research Compressor(LSRC). The objective was to identify the unsteady pressure distribution in the blade passage by ensemble average technique acquired from high-frequency response pressure transducers and the tip vortex by root mean square value(RMS value). Data were reduced statistically using phase-lock technique for detailed pressure distributions.

  • Image-based rendering is an approach to generate realistic images in real-time without modeling explicit 3D geometry, Especially, TIP(Tour Into the Picture) is preferred for its simplicity in constructing 3D background scene. However, TP has a limitation that a viewpoint cannot go far from the origin of the TIP for the lack of geometrical information. in this paper, we propose a method to interpolating the TIP images to generate smooth and realistic navigation. We construct multiple TIP models in a wide area of the virtual environment. Then we interpolate foreground objects and background object respectively to generate smooth navigation results.

  • It is known that tip clearance flows reduce the pressure rin, flow range and efficiency of the turbomachinery. So, the clear understanding about flow fields in the tip region is needed to efficiently design the turbomachinery. The Navier-Stokes code with the proper treatment of the boundary conditions has been developed to analyze the three-dimensional steady viscous flow fields in the transonic rotating blades and a numerical study has been conducted to investigate the detail flow physics in the tip region of transonic rotor, NASA Rotor 67. The computational results in the tip region of transonic rotors show the leakage vortices, leakage flow from pressure side to suction side and their interaction with a shock Depending on the operating conditions, the position of shock-wave on the blade surface are v8y different close to the blade tip of the transonic compressor rotor. The shock-wave position dose to the blade tip had the dose relationship with the starting position of leakage vortex and the direction of leakage flow.

  • The effects of finite gap at the tip of turbomachinery blades have long been topics of both theoretical and experimental research because tip clearance degrades turbomachinery performance. This paper presents an analytical study of radial flow redistribution in a high speed compressor stage with axisymmetric tip clearance. The flow is assumed to be inviscid and compressible. The stage is modeled as an actuator disc and the analysis is carried out in the meridional plane. Upon going through the stage, the radially uniform upstream flow splits into the tip clearance and passage flows. The tip clearance flow is modeled as a jet driven by blade loading, or pressure difference between the pressure and suction sides. The model takes into consideration the detached shocks which occur in the rotor passage at the design point. This shock model is used to calculate the density ratio across the stage. Thus, the model is capable of predicting the kinematic effects of tip clearance in the high speed compressor flow field.

  • This study describes the geometric characteristic and the 5-axis machining method of end mill body with insert tip. The geometry of end mill body is consisted of the flute part and the insert tip part. Thus, this study defines the flute part as ruled surface with constant helix angle and the insert tip part as rectangular plane on general direction. The geometric algorithm and the 5-axis NC part program were calculated by our programmed software and a sampled end mill body was machined on 5-axis machining center equipped with two index tables. The machined end mill body with insert tip was very agreeable to the designed end mill body with insert tip. Thus, the method proposed in this study may be very useful for the machining of end mill body with insert tip.
