  • It is efficient to use the time-domain beamforming to operate the various pulse with the different pulse length, frequency, bandwidth in active sonar system. In this paper, we propose a time-domain beamformer with the cumulative processing in the decomposed channel using the polynomial interpolation to solve the problem of the computational cost, high transmission data rate, and the lack of internal memory.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the frequency characteristics and the crosstalk of the adjacent parallel lines and the crossed lines in high-speed packaging interconnections by using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D FDTD) method. To analyze the actual crosstalk phenomena in the transmission of the high-speed digital sgnal, the step pulse with fast rise time was used for the source excitation signal instead of using the Gaussian pulse that is generally used in FDTD. To veify the theoretical resutls, the experimental interconnection lines that were fabricated on the Duroid substrate($\varepsilon_{r}$=2.33, h=0.787 [mm]) were tested by TDR(time domain reflectometry). The results show good agreement between the analyzed results and the tested outcomes.

  • With the improvement of digital signal processors, digital pulse compressor(DPC) is widely used in radar systems. The DPC can be implemented by using FIR filter algorithm in time domain or FFT algorithm in frequency domain. This paper designs an expansible DPC using multiple DSPs. With ADSP-21060 of Analog Devices Inc., the computation time as a function of the number of received range cells and FIR filter tap is compared and analyzed in time domain using C-language and assembly language. therefore, when radar system parameters are determined, the number of DSP's required to implement DPC can be easily estimated.

  • In this paper, we presented the characteristics of the impulse signal which is applicable to the ultra-wideband antennas. In general, the width of the impulse has around sub nano or pico seconds in the time domain, where it corresponds to the wideband in the frequency domain. We confirmed by experiment that the impulse has around 130ps of the pulse width and bandwidth of 4GHz when 10MHz of sine wave excited as an input pulse. The fidelity factor was calculated in the time domain and -10dB bandwidth in the frequency domain was investigated for resistively loaded dipole antennas with different resistance per unit length. The received impulse signal through the wideband antennas is confirmed in the time and frequency domains that received pulse is to be similar to the generated impulse. The fidelity and bandwidth of the quantity value are 0.98 and 3.4GHz, respectively.

  • The distortion of picosecond pulses caused by dispersion as it propagates along microstripline and CPW(Coplanar waveguide) is investigated and measured using time domain measurement. Especially, this study presents that the distortion of these lines is analyzed and compared considering the relation between the dispersion effect and cut-off frequency(f$\_$TE/) of fundamental TE mode for the substrate of line. To verify theoretical results, several samples of 50 $\Omega$ lines are fabricated on the two kind of substrates with the different values of f$\_$TE/. The propagation characteristics of picosecond Gaussian pulse on thess lines are simply measured using VNA(Vector Network Analyzer) with the time-domain analysis function.

  • With the development of digital signal processor(DSP), digital pulse compressor (DPC) is commonly used in radar systems. A DPC is implemented by using finite impulse response(FIR) filter algorithm in time domain or fast Fourier transform(FFT) algorithm in frequency domain. This paper compares the computation complexity tot these two methods and calculates boundary Fm filter taps that determine which of the two methods is better based on computation amount. Also, it shows that the boundary FIR filter taps for DSP, ADSP21060, and those for computation complexity have similar characteristic.

  • Time Stretched Pulse (TSP) is used for transmitting and analyzing the impulse signal over the designated spatial place. However, if transfer functions of transmitter and receiver are unknown, performance investigation of free field in temporal domain is barely possible due to the overlap between the direct and indirect signal from the space. Generally, the free field or hemi-free field is evaluated by the Annex A of ISO 3745 in which utilizing the inverse square law with one-third octave band signals. In this paper, the author performs analysis of free field via applying TSP with inverse square law and the results are compared with the one-third octave band signals. According to the analysis of deviation between the corresponding signal and inverse square law model, the proposed TSP method provides the comparable performance index to the one-third octave band signal with reduced measuring time. Provided that the pre-whitening can be implementable by employing the speaker and microphone transfer function, further analyses from TSP compression are able to be performed such as multipath separation from time domain data. The anechoic chamber used in this experiment is verified conformance with ISO 3745 for free field and hemi-free field condition for limited frequency of the signal.

  • In this paper, we designed the antipodal vivaldi antenna for IR-UWB systems application and evaluated IR-UWB antenna performance for the ultra wideband impulse signal transmission in the time- and frequency-domain. The designed antipodal vivaldi antenna was fabricated using FR-4 substrate which thickness 1.6 mm, dielectric constant ${\epsilon}_r=4.7$ and $tan{\delta}=0.002$. We measured the return loss, far filed radiation pattern at the anechoic chamber in the frequency-domain. We also performed the pulse fidelity analysis in the time-domain using nano-second impulse signal transmission and demonstrated the feasibility of ultra wideband signal stable transmission in the UWB band. The designed and fabricated antipodal vivaldi antenna could be emitting and receiving the IR-UWB signal while preserving low pulse distortion and good radiation pattern in time- and frequency-domain.

  • Objectives: For the traditional pulse diagnosis in Oriental Medicine, not only the pulse shape in time domain, but the width, length and depth of arterial pulse also should be measured. However, conventional pulse diagnostic systems have failed to measure the spatial parameters of the arterial pulse e.g. effective length of arterial pulse in the wrist. In fact, there are many ways to measure that kind of spatial features in arterial pulsation, but among them, the method using image sensor provides relatively cheap and simple way, therefore I tested feasibility of measuring 2-dimensional pressure distribution by imaging devices. Methods: Using widely used PC cameras and dotted balloons, the subtle oscillation of skin over the radial artery was recorded continuously, and then the displacement of every dot was calculated. Consequently, the time course of that displacements shows arterial pulse wave. Results: By the proposed method I could get pressure distribution map with 30Hz sampling rate, 21steps quantization resolution, and approximately 1mm spatial resolution. With reduced quantization resolution, $3cm{\times}4cm$ view angle could be achieved. Conclusion: Although this method has some limitations, it would be useful method for detecting 2-dimensional features of arterial pulse, and accordingly, this method provides a novel way to detect 'narrow pulse', 'wide pulse', 'long pulse', 'short pulse', and their derivatives.

  • The time synchronization of each sub-unit of a pulsed generator is important to generate an output high-power radio frequency (RF) signal. To obtain the time synchronization between an input RF signal fed by an external source and an electron beam produced by an electric pulse generator, the influence of different charging voltages on a delay and a rise time of the output pulse waveform in the electric pulse generator should be carefully considered. This paper aims to study the timing characteristics of the delay and the rise time as a function of different charging voltages with a peak value of less than -35 kV in the high-voltage pulse generator, including a trigger generator (TG) and a pulse-forming line (PFL). The simulation has been carried out to estimate characteristics in the time domain, in addition to their output high-voltage amplitude. Experimental results compared with those obtained by simulation indicate that the delay of the output pulses of the TG and PFL, which are made by controlling the external triggering signal with respect to different charging voltages, is getting longer as the charging voltage is increasing, and their rise times are inversely proportional to the amplitude of the charging voltage.
