  • This study aims to propose evaluation methods of chemical washing performance and estimate the washing capability by flowing detergent/water solution for application to home appliances such as dishwashers. Standard pollutant is stearic acid. A numerical study is also tried using a SIMPLER code. Preliminary experiments are performed by varying the concentration and temperature of the solution. From the pre-experiments, 10 minute pre-curing time is found to be necessary to remove the stearic acid. Stoichiometric ratio and detergent consumption coefficient of reaction between the detergent and stearic are estimated following a proposed method. Washing experiments of pollutant to compare with the numerical results are performed. The relative errors between the experimental and the numerical results with pre-curing time included are less than 7%. In conclusion, important mechanisms of chemical washing are revealed and methods of predicting washing performance are well established.

  • This paper presents a model for durability evaluation of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, considering mainly a build-up of surface chloride $(C_s)$ as well as diffusion coefficient (D) and chloride threshold level $(C_{lim})$. In this study, time dependency of $C_s$ and D were extensively studied for more accurate evaluation of service life of concrete structures. An analytical solution to the Fick's second law was presented for prediction of chloride ingress for time varying $C_s$. For the time varying $C_s$, a refined model using a logarithm function for time dependent $C_s$ was proposed by the regression analysis, and averaging integrated values of the D with time over exposed duration were calculated and then used for prediction of the chloride ingress to consider time dependency of D. Durability design was also carried out for railway concrete structures exposed to marine environment to ensure 100 years of service life by using the proposed models along with the standard specification on durability in Korea. The proposed model was verified by the so-called performance-based durability design, which is widely used in Europe. Results show that the standard specification underestimates durability performances of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, so the cover depth design using current durability evaluation in the standard specifications is very much conservative. Therefore, it is found that utilizing proposed models considering time dependent characteristics of $C_s$ and D can evaluate service lift of concrete structures in marine environment more accurately.

  • The objectives of this investigation were to develop an improved analytical method and to review with respect to experimental parameters and thermo-physical properties influencing the freezing time prediction. The results indicate that the relationship between freezing time and product size is dependent on the surface heat transfer coefficient. As the magnitude of surface heat transfer coefficient decreases, the influence of product size on freezing time becomes more profound. But the freezing time does decrease slightly as the coefficients are increased to values greater than 150 $w/m^2^{\circ}C$. In addition, influence of thermo-physical properties on the freezing time prediction shown generally density, water content, specific heat and thermal conductivity, in order of % difference. Multiple linear regression equation for freezing time prediction were obtained with respect to 4 different food materials with varying thickness.

  • In order to measure in-situ suspended particle size, volume concentration of suspended particulate matter and current speed, mooring observation was performed at the Gwangyang Bay by using of an optical instrument, 'LISST-100' and an acoustic instrument, 'ADV'(St. S1). And the sediment flux was obtained based on the concentration of suspended particulate matter and current speeds measured at three lines of Gwangyang Bay during ebb and flood tide of August 2006. To investigate the spatial variation of suspended particulate matter, profiling observations were measured difference echo intensity and beam attenuation coefficient by using of ADCP and Transmissometer (Line A, B, C). The suspended sediment flux rate at the mouth of Gwangyang Bay was observed to be higher during asymmetrical than symmetrical of current speeds. The flux of suspended particulate matter concentration and current speeds were transported to southeastern direction of surface layer and northwestern direction of bottom layer at the western area at line A of Gwangyang Bay. Small suspended particles have been found to increase attenuation and transmission more efficiently than similar large particles using acoustic intensity (ADV/ADCP) or optical transmit coefficient (LISST-100/Transmissometer). The application and problems as using optical or acoustic instruments will be detected for use in time varying calibrations to account for non-negligible changes in complex environments in situ particle dynamics are poorly understood.

  • In this paper, we study an asymptotic behavior of the finite-time ruin probability of the compound Poisson model in the case that the initial surplus is large. To compare an exact ruin probability with an approximate one, we place the focus on the exact calculation for the ruin probability when the claim size distribution is regularly varying tailed (i.e. exponential claims and inverse Gaussian claims). We estimate an adjustment coefficient in these examples and show the relationship between the adjustment coefficient and the safety premium. The illustration study shows that as the safety premium increases so does the adjustment coefficient. Larger safety premium means lower "long-term risk", which only stands to reason since higher safety premium means a faster rate of safety premium income to offset claims.

  • This paper describes the FFT and coefficient analysis of vibration signals for preventive diagnosis of a mold transformer at normal and abnormal state. Varying applied voltage, loading current and temperature as control variables for he experiment, measurement variables such as magnitude of vibration signals, frequency spectrum and time series coefficient were analyzed. The vibration signals by variation of control variables were measured by acceleration sensor adhered on the surface of winding and core, and measurement variables were calculated using dat acquisition system. After analyzing the normal state, the structural distortion was also simulated. The vibration signals at abnormal state were measured by the same control variables variation as the normal state. As a result, vibration signals between normal and abnormal state could be distinguished by comparison of the perpendicular and horizontal vibration signal.

  • The (1-x)MgTiO$_3$-xSrTiO$_3$(x=0.02∼0.08) ceramics were fabricated by conventional mixed oxide method. The sintering temperature and time were 1250$^{\circ}C$∼1400$^{\circ}C$, 2hr., respectively. The structural and microwave dielectric properties were investigated by varying sintering temperature and composition ratio. In the (1-x)MgTiO$_3$-xSrTiO$_3$(x=0.02) ceramics, the cubic SrTiO$_3$and hexagonal MgTiO$_3$phases were coexisted. The dielectric constant was increased and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency( $\tau_f$) was decreased with addition of SrTiO$_3$. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau_f$) was gradually varied from negative value to positive value with increasing the SrTiO$_3$.

  • In the restricted sea way such as fair way in harbor, narrow channel etc, the safe ship-handling is a very important problem, which is greatly related with turning ability of ships. It is of great importance that ship-handlers can grasp the position of pivoting point varying with time increase at any moment for relevant steering activities. Mean while, in advanced ship-building countries they study and investigated pivoting point related with turning characteristics, hut their main interest lies in ship design, not in safe ship controlling and maneuvering. In this regards it is the purpose of this paper to provide ship-handlers better under standing of pivoting point location together with turning characteristics and then to help them in safe ship-handling by presenting fact that pivoting points vary according to configuration of ships. The author calculated the variation of pivoting point as per time increase for various type of vessels, based on the hydrodynamic derivatives obtained at test of Davidson Laboratory of Stevens Institutes of Technology , New Jersey, U.S.A. The results were classified and investigated according to the magnitude of block coefficient , length-beam ratio, length-draft ratio, rudder area ratio ete, and undermentioned results were obtained. (1) The trajectory of pivoting point due to variation of rudder angle are all the same at any time, though the magenitude of turning circle are changed variously. (2) The moving of pivoting point is affected by the magnitude of block coefficient, length-beam ratio, length-draft ratio, however the effect by rudder area ratio might be disregarded. (3) In controlling and maneuvering of vessels in harbor, ship-handlers might regard that the pivoting point would be placed on 0.2~0.3L forward from center of gravity at initial stage. (4) The pivoting point of VLCC or container feeder vessels which have block coefficient more than 0.8 and length-beam ratio less than 6.5 are located on or over bow in the steady turning. (5) When a vessel intends to avoid some floating obstruction such as buoy forward around her eourse, the ship-handler might consider that the pivoting point would be close by bow in ballast condition and cloase by center of gravity in full-loaded condition.

  • Recently, advanced signal analysis which is called "time-frequency analysis" has been used widely in nondestructive evaluation applications. Wavelet transform(WT) and Wigner Distribution are the most advanced techniques for processing signals with time-varying spectra. Wavelet analysis method is an attractive technique for evaluation of material characterization nondestructively. Wavelet transform is applied to the time-frequency analysis of ultrasonic echo waveform obtained by an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. In this study, the feasibility of noise suppression of ultrasonic flaw signal and frequency-dependent ultrasonic group velocity and attenuation coefficient using wavelet analysis of ultrasonic echo waveform have been verified experimentally. The Gabor function is adopted the analyzing wavelet. The wavelet analysis shows that the variations of ultrasonic group velocity and attenuation coefficient due to the change of material characterization can be evaluated at each frequency. Furthermore, to assure the enhancement of detectability and naw sizing performance, both computer simulated results and experimental measurements using wavelet signal processing are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the noise suppression of ultrasonic flaw signal obtained from austenitic stainless steel weld including EDM notch.

  • Interdiffusion process at interfaces of chemically identical polymers (e.g., deuterated-nondeuterated pairs) with different molecular weights or polymers with similar physical properties, is studied here by varying the diffusion time. Considering the vacancy flux ($J_v$) and adopting the Cahn-Hilliard interracial energy in describing this system, we can see that the variation of the interfacial composition profile with time is asymetric and the interface moves towards the polymer with the lower molecular weight as interdiffusion progresses. Furthermore, interface shift $\Delta\chi$, which characterizes the interdiffusion between polymers, agrees well with the behaviors of the existing experimental data. We can also obtain the interface shift factor C, which can be converted into values of $D_s$ (self-diffusion coefficient of the smaller molecules), from the slopes of the linear fits to the data of the interface shift.
