Traditionally, multi-story buildings are designed to provide stiffer structural support to withstand lateral earthquake loading. Introducing flexible elements at the base of a structure and providing sufficient damping is an alternative way to mitigate seismic hazards. These features can be achieved with a device known as an isolator. This paper covers the design of base isolators for multi-story buildings in medium-risk seismicity regions and evaluates the structural responses of such isolators. The well-known tower building for police personnel built in Dhaka, Bangladesh by the Public Works Department (PWD) has been used as a case study to justify the viability of incorporating base isolators. The objective of this research was to establish a simplified model of the building that can be effectively used for dynamic analysis, to evaluate the structural status, and to suggest an alternative option to handle the lateral seismic load. A finite element model was incorporated to understand the structural responses. Rubber-steel bearing (RSB) isolators such as Lead rubber bearing (LRB) and high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) were used in the model to insert an isolator link element in the structural base. The nonlinearities of rubber-steel bearings were considered in detail. Linear static, linear dynamic, and nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed for both fixed-based (FB) and base isolated (BI) buildings considering the earthquake accelerograms, histories, and response spectra of the geological sites. Both the time-domain and frequency-domain approaches were used for dynamic solutions. The results indicated that for existing multi-story buildings, RSB diminishes the muscular amount of structural response compared to conventional non-isolated structures. The device also allows for higher horizontal displacement and greater structural flexibility. The suggested isolation technique is able to mitigate the structural hazard under even strong earthquake vulnerability.

The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) is widely applied to the analysis of various microwave circuits. However, previous source modeling techniques have a lot of constraints and difficulties to apply for general geometries. Therefore, the internal resistive source modeling technique is suggested for efficiently analyzing various types of microwave circuit in this paper. Its efficiency is proved by comparing the computation time with that of hard source modeling. Accuracy is also verified by comparing the scattering parameters with those of previous source modeling methods and measurements for several microwave circuits.
In this study, low- and high-frequency structure behaviors were identified and a systematic analysis procedure was proposed using noisy GPS data from a 165-m-high tower in ${\dot{I}}stanbul$, Turkey. The raw GPS data contained long- and short-periodic position changes and noisy signals at different frequencies. To extract the significant results from this complex dataset, the general structure and components of the GPS signal were modeled and analyzed in the time and frequency domains. Uncontrolled jumps and deviations involving the signal in the time domain were pre-filtered. Then, the signal was converted to the frequency domain after applying low- and high-pass filters, and the frequency and periodic component values were calculated. The spectrum of the tower motion obtained from the filtered GPS data had dominant peaks at a low frequency of $1.15572{\times}10-4Hz$ and a high frequency of 0.16624 Hz, consistent with two equivalent GPS datasets. Then, the signal was reconstructed using inverse Fourier transform with the dominant low frequency values to obtain filtered and interpretable clean signals. With the proposed sequence, processing of noisy data collected from the GPS receivers mounted very close to the structure is effective in revealing the basic behaviors and features of buildings.
In this paper, the necessity of the filter coefficients compensation for the lattice transversal joint (LTJ) adaptive filter was explained in general and with ease by analyzing it with respect to the time-varying transform domain adaptive filter. And also the reduction method of computational complexity for filter coefficients compensation was proposed using the property that speech signal is stationary during a short time period and its effectiveness was verified through experiments using artificial and real speech signals. The proposed adaptive filter reduces the computational complexity for filter coefficients compensation by 95%, and when the filter is applied to the acoustic echo canceller with 1000 taps, the total complexity is reduced by 82%.
In this paper, a algorithm is proposed, which is applicable to the transient analysis of diffusion equations by combined use of the Laplace transform and the finite element method. The proposed method removes the time terms using the Laplace transform and then solves the associated equation with the finite element method. The solution which is solved at frequency domain is transformed into time domain by use of the Laplace inversion. To verify the proposed algorithm, a heat conduction problem is analysed. And the solution showed a good agreement with analytic solution. Because the time-step method is not needed, the proposed method is very useful in solving various kinds of diffusion equations.

In this paper, firstly, acceleration-time histories were generated by varying strong motion duration in the frequency domain for application to a seismically isolated nuclear power structure, so as to examine the effects of strong motion duration on the behavior of the structure. Secondly, real recorded earthquakes were modified to match the target response spectrum based on the revised SRP 3.7.1(2007) and the modified time histories were applied to the analysis of a seismically isolated nuclear power structure. The obtained values of acceleration and displacement responses of the structure were, finally, compared with the values obtained in case of applying acceleration-time histories generated in the frequency domain to the structure.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Tat is one of the viral gene products essential for HIV replication. The exogenous Tat protein is transduced through the plasma membrane and then accumulated in a cell. The basic domain of the Tat protein, which is rich in arginine and lysine residues and called the protein transduction domain (PTD), has been identified to be responsible for this transduction activity. To better understand the nature of the transduction mediated by this highly basic domain of HIV-1 Tat, the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) was expressed and purified as a fusion protein with a peptide derived from the HIV-1 Tat basic domain in Escherichia coli. The transduction of Tat-GFP into mammalian cells was then determined by a Western blot analysis and fluorescence microscopy. The cells treated with Tat-GFP exhibited dose- and time-dependent increases in their intracellular level of the protein. the effective transduction of denatured Tat-GFP into both the nucleus and the cytoplasm of mammalian cells was also demonstrated, thereby indicating that the unfolding of the transduced protein is required for efficient transduction. Accordingly, the availability of recombinant Tat-GFP can facilitate the simple and specific identification of the protein transduction mediated by the HIV-1 Tat basic domain in living cells either by fluorescence microscopy or by a fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis.

Electricity price forecasting has become an integral part of power system operation and control. In this paper, a wavelet transform (WT) based neural network (NN) model to forecast price profile in a deregulated electricity market has been presented. The historical price data has been decomposed into wavelet domain constitutive sub series using WT and then combined with the other time domain variables to form the set of input variables for the proposed forecasting model. The behavior of the wavelet domain constitutive series has been studied based on statistical analysis. It has been observed that forecasting accuracy can be improved by the use of WT in a forecasting model. Multi-scale analysis from one to seven levels of decomposition has been performed and the empirical evidence suggests that accuracy improvement is highest at third level of decomposition. Forecasting performance of the proposed model has been compared with (i) a heuristic technique, (ii) a simulation model used by Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), (iii) a Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model, (iv) NN model, (v) Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, (vi) Dynamic Regression (DR) model, and (vii) Transfer Function (TF) model. Forecasting results show that the performance of the proposed WT based NN model is satisfactory and it can be used by the participants to respond properly as it predicts price before closing of window for submission of initial bids.
A coupled analysis of a floating crane barge with a crane wire and hanging structure is carried out in thetime domain. The motion analysis of the crane barge is based on the floating multi-body dynamics, and thecrane wire is modeled as a simple spring tension. The hanging structure is assumed to be a rigid body with 3 degree-of-freedom translational motion. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted at three different stages. First, the developed code was validated by comparing the time-domain motion response of a crane barge with the frequency-domain results. Then, a coupled analysis of a crane barge and simple structure hanging by the crane wire was performed using the present scheme. The motion response and wire tension from the present calculations are compared with the results of OrcaFlex. The agreement between the two sets of results isfairly good. Last, lowering simulations in regular and irregular waves were conducted considering buoyancy changes in the hanging structure. The effects of the wave conditions, structure's weight, wire length, and lowering speed on the wire tension are considered.

This paper presents an all-direct domain decomposition approach for large-scale structural analysis. The proposed approach achieves computational robustness and efficiency by enforcing the compatibility of the displacement field across the sub-domain boundaries via local Lagrange multipliers and augmented Lagrangian formulation (ALF). The proposed domain decomposition approach was compared to the existing FETI approach in terms of the computational time and memory usage. The parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm was described in detail. Finally, a preliminary validation was attempted for the proposed approach, and the numerical results of two- and three-dimensional problems were compared to those obtained through a dual-primal FETI approach. The results indicate an improvement in the performance as a result of the implementing the proposed approach.
