The guided wave technique is commonly used in structural health monitoring as the guided waves can propagate far in the structures without much energy loss. The guided waves are conventionally generated by the surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). However, there is still lack of understanding of the wave propagation in layered structures, especially in structures made of anisotropic materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this paper, the Rayleigh-Lamb wave strain tuning curves in a PWAS-mounted unidirectional CFRP plate are analytically derived using the normal mode expansion (NME) method. The excitation frequency spectrum is then multiplied by the tuning curves to calculate the frequency response spectrum. The corresponding time domain responses are obtained through the inverse Fourier transform. The theoretical calculations are validated through finite element analysis and an experimental study. The PWAS responses under the free, debonded and bonded CFRP conditions are investigated and compared. The results demonstrate that the amplitude and travelling time of wave packet can be used to evaluate the CFRP bonding conditions. The method can work on a baseline-free manner.

This paper addresses the analytical modeling and dynamic response of the advanced composite rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating viscoelastic material. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and coriolis force fields. The dual technology including structural tailoring and passive damping technology is implemented in order to enhance the vibrational characteristics of the blade. Whereas structural tailoring methodology uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive material technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material (VEM) embedded into the host structure. The VEM layer damping treatment is modeled by using the Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method, which is employed to account for the frequency-dependent characteristics of the VEM. The case of VEM spread over the entire span of the structure is considered. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergistic implications of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on the dynamic response of a rotating thin-walled b ε am exposed to external time-dependent excitations.
Generally, structural optimization is carried out based on external static loads. All forces have dynamic characteristics in the real world. Mathematical optimization with dynamic loads is extremely difficult in a large-scale problem due to the behaviors in the time domain. The dynamic loads are often transformed into static loads by dynamic factors, design codes, and etc. Therefore, the optimization results can give inaccurate solutions. Recently, a systematic transformation has been proposed as an engineering algorithm. Equivalent static loads are made to generate the same displacement field as the one from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic analysis. Thus, many load cases are used as the multiple leading conditions which are not costly to include in modern structural optimization. In this research, it is mathematically proved that the solution of the algorithm satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary condition. At first, the solution of the new algorithm is mathematically obtained. Using the termination criteria, it is proved that the solution satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary condition of the original dynamic response optimization problem. The application of the algorithm is discussed.
Transport of a scalar quantity, such as chemical concentration or temperature, is important in many engineering applications and environmental flows. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow and concentration fields inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius (Yoon et al.). This study focused on the concentration development at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank operated under turbulent conditions. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the large-scale mixing structure at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank by using the large eddy simulation. The time sequence of concentration and flow fields shows the flow dependency of the concentration development. The presence of spatial inhomogenieties is detailed by observing the time variation oflocal concentration at different positions.
In an entrepreneurial ecosystem, the failure rate of startups is extremely high at 90%, and every startup that fails becomes an orphan. This phenomenon leads to higher costs of failure for the entrepreneurs in the ecosystem. Failed startups have many lessons to offer to the ecosystem and offer guidance to the potential entrepreneur, and this area is not fully explored compared to the literature on successful startups. We use a case based method distinguishing a failed startup and a successful startup, studying the entrepreneurial characteristics and firm level factors which cause the failures, in the technology startup ecosystem of Bangalore. We study one of the modes of exit adopted by failed startup entrepreneurs and draw key lessons on causes that culminate in failures. We have identified that factors such as the time to minimum viable product cycle, time for revenue realization, founders' complementary skillsets, age of founders with their domain expertise, personality type of founders, attitude towards financial independence and willingness to avail mentorship at critical stages, will decisively differentiate failed startups from the successful ones. Accordingly, implications have been derived for potential entrepreneurs for reducing the cost of failures in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A mathematical model, UNSATR which predicts the seepage flow through the body of dike especially under the tidal fluctuation has been developed. This model has been revised from UNSAT2 model which was developed on the basis of the saturated-unsaturated theory by Neuman. UNSATR has been verified and applied to the hydraulic model in order to estimated the seepage quantity, the formation of free water surface etc. The results lead to the following conclusions : 1. Seepage rates between the mathematical model and hydraulic model experiment are very similar to each other both in constant and transient water level conditions. 2. The lapsed time to be steady state of the free water surface becomes late as the tidal levels are relatively low mainly due to the seepage flow from the unsaturated zone of the body of dike. 3. Under the transient state of water levels, owing to the flow from the unsaturated domain, streamlines crossing to the free water surface are found and time lag during a falling tide may allow the free water surface inside the body of dike to stand at a high level than the outside water level. 4. The utility and validity of UNSATR model are convinced when the analyses on seepage problems through the porous embankment of the soil structures on the conditions of the steady and unsteady states are carried out.

In this study, nonlinear aeroelastic characteristics of an supersonic missile wing with strong shock interferences are investigated. The missile wing model has a freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. To practically consider the effects of freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method is applied to structural vibration analysis based on finite element method. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are also considered in supersonic flow regions. To solve the nonlinear aeroelastic governing equations including the freeplay effect, a modal-based coupled time-marching technique based on the fictitious mass method is used in the time-domain. Various aeroelastic computations have been performed for the nonlinear wing structure model. Linear and nonlinear aeroelastic analyses have been conducted and compared with each other in supersonic flow regions. Typical nonlinear limit cycle oscillations and phase plots are presented to show the complex vibration phenomena with simultaneous fluid-structure nonlinearities.
According to recent studies by scientists about how to search for food, homes and the mates, it is found that the gradient information plays a key role. From cells to insects and large animals, they mostly either have special sensing organism or use a strategy to measure the gradient. Use of a perturbation as an additional input is introduced for sensor signal processing in order to get the gradient information. Different from typical approach, which calculates the gradient from differentiation, the proposed processing is done by a form of integration, thus it is very robust to noise. Discrete time domain analyses are given for one, two and three input functions for the estimation of the gradients. The amplitude and the frequency of the perturbation are two important parameters for this approach. A quantitative index to measure the effects of the amplitude is developed based on the linear regression analysis. The frequency of the perturbation is to be selected high enough to finish one period of the perturbation before the property is changed significantly with respect to time. Another quantitative index is proposed for guiding the selection of the frequency.
A numerical study is made on the melting process of an unconstrained ice inside an isothermal ice-ball capsule. The unmelted ice core is continuously ascending on account of buoyancy forces. Such a buoyancy-assisted melting is commonly characterized by the existence of a thin liquid film above the ice core. The present study is motivated to present a full-equation-based analysis of the influences of the initial subcooling and the natural convection on the fluid flow associated with the buoyancy-assisted melting. In the light of the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the melted and unmelted regions are resolved in one domain. Numerical results are obtained by varying the wall temperature and initial temperature. The present results reported the transition of the flow pattern in a spherical capsule, as the wall temperature was increased over the density inversion point. In addition, time wise variation of the shapes for the liquid film and the lower ice surface, the time rate of change in the melt volume fraction and the melting distance at symmetric line is analyzed and is presented.
