TiC-Ni and TiC-Ni-Mo cermet powders were produced by Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. The cooling rate of synthesized powders were controlled by using the V-shaped copper jig and the carbide size decreased with increasing the cooling rate I. e decreasing the width of copper jig Round shape carbide particles were produced after SHS reaction in TiC-Ni as well as TiC-Ni-Mo powders. Local segregation of Mo rich phases was observed in SHS powder of TiC-Ni-Mo and the uneven dis-triobution of Mo promoted the faster growth rate of carbide particles during sintering compared to the same composition specimen with commercial TiC powder. Howogeneous microstructure of TiC-Ni-Mo cermet was obtained when the elemental Mo powder was mixed with the SHS powder of TiC-Ni.
Hydrothemal synthesis of PbTiO3 has been investigated. A comprehensive thermodynamic model for heteroge-nous reacting solid-aquous system has been used to predict the optimum condition for the synthesis. Synthesis were performed using lead acetate trihydrate as Pb source crystalline TiO2 as Ti source and KOH as minerali-zer. The synthesis has been examined at low temperature (16$0^{\circ}C$) Phase pure perovskite PbTiO3 has been obtained at high pH(above 0.5 mol KOH). The morphology of PbTiO3 was acicular shape. It has been found sible for a distortion in the c direction. The water is gradully released on annealing the powder to 40$0^{\circ}C$ and the normal crystallographic properties are restored.
The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of in-situ synthesis and net-shape forming of the titanium matrix (TiC+TiB) hybrid composites using a casting route. From the scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analyzer, X-ray diffraction and thermodynamic calculations, the spherical TiC and needle like TiB reinforced hybrid titanium matrix composites could be obtained in-situ by the conventional melting and casting route between titanium and $B_4C$. No melt-mold reaction occurred between the titanium matrix (TiC+TiB) hybrid composites and the SKK mold, since the mold is consisted with interstitial and substitutional metal-mold reaction products. Not only the sound in-situ synthesis but also the economic net-shape forming of the titanium matrix (TiC+TiB) hybrid composites could be possible by the conventional casting route.
(Ti.W)C complex carbide was synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) chemical furnace. Attempt to find the optimal condition for synthesis of (Ti.W)C the effects of molar ratio of Ti:W:C on the synthesized powders and mechanical properties were investigated, Optimum molar ratio of these synthe-sized powder was Ti:W:C=0.7:0.2:1.0 The bulk density M,O.R Hardness Fracture toughness of (Ti.W)C complex carbide sintered at 200$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min by hot-pressing under the pressure of 20 MPa were 7.6g/cm3, 475 MPa, 17,.7 GPa respectively.
In this study, the ignition temperature of the Al-Ti-C reaction system, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the TiC/Mg composite which produced by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) followed by stir casting process were investigated. Mg based composite with uniformly dispersed 0, 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC were fabricated, and higher volume fraction of TiC reinforced composite showed superior compressive strength and wear resistance as compared with Mg matrix. It is attributed to the less contamination, defects, impurities in TiC/Mg composite by the in-situ SHS yield effective load transfer from the matrix to the reinforcement.
TiB2 and TiC were prepared from the mixture of metal titanium, boron and graphite powders in Argon atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis method. The sintered properties of TiB2-TiC composite as a function of TiC content and sintering temperature were investigated in TiB2 matrix. The sintered properties were the most excellent at 10 wt% TiC content in TiB2-TiC composite. The relative density, M.O.R strength, hardness and fracture toughness of TiB2-10 wt% TiC composite sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa were 98.6%, 634 MPa, 2128.1 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 4.09 MN/m3/2, respectively.
Fe-TiC composite powder was fabricated via two steps. The first step was a high-energy milling of FeO and carbon powders followed by heat treatment for reduction to obtain a (Fe+C) powder mixture. The optimal condition for high-energy milling was 500 rpm for 1h, which had been determined by a series of preliminary experiment. Reduction heat-treatment was carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1h in flowing argon gas atmosphere. Reduced powder mixture was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Laser Particle Size Analyser (LPSA). The second step was a high-energy milling of (Fe+C) powder mixture and additional $TiH_2$ powder, and subsequent in-situ synthesis of TiC particulate in Fe matrix through a reaction of carbon and Ti. High-energy milling was carried out at 500 rpm for 1 h. Heat treatment for reaction synthesis was carried out at $1000{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon gas atmosphere. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of the fabricated Fe-TiC composite powder showed that only TiC and Fe phases exist. Results from FE-SEM observation and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectros-copy (EDS) revealed that TiC phase exists uniformly dispersed in the Fe matrix in a form of particulate with a size of submicron.

The Ti3SiC2 MAX phase was synthesized by arc-melting process under three different processing times. We confirmed that the reaction between the TiCX phase and Ti-Si liquid phase is important for the synthesis of the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase. Results suggest that the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase decomposed when the arc-melting time was greater than 80s. Herein, we aim to determine the detailed parameters for the reported arc-melting process, which can provide useful insights on the synthesis of the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase by arc-melting process. Furthermore, we compared the electrical characteristics and densities of the three samples.
In this study, a novel approach to the explosive synthesis of titanium carbide (TiC) is discussed. Nonstoichiometric $TiC_x$ powder was produced via the underwater explosion of a Ti powder encapsulated within a spherical explosive charge. The explosion process, bubble formation, and synthesis process were visualized using high-speed camera imaging. It was concluded that synthesis occurred within the detonation gas during the first expansion/contraction cycle of the bubble, which was accompanied by a strong emission of light. The recovered powders were studied using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Submicron particles were generated during the explosion. An increase in the carbon content of the starting powder resulted in an increase in the carbon content of the final product. No oxide byproducts were observed within the recovered powders.
