Fe and Si are common impurity elements in the aluminum alloys. In this investigation, the effects of the addition of Fe and Si on the age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd casting alloys were examined through hardness measurements, calorimetric techniques and observation of the transmission electron microscopy. The addition of Fe depresses the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$, and thus retards the peak aging time and reduces the peak hardness of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys. On the contrary, the addition of Si accelerates the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$ and thus accelerates age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys.
This study presents the wear characteristics of Ti alloys (Pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) fabricated by centrifugal precision casting in an Ohara dental titanium casting machine. It was found that the hardness of the surface region is higher than that of the interior region. It is considered that the oxygen adsorption in the surface region during casting, leads to the interstitial solid solution hardening. Wear resistance incerases in the order of pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys. The interior hardness value increases in the same order. The specific wear rate increases with applied load and increases monotonously with sliding speed. The Fe transfer from the counterpart material was observed on the worn surface of the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy. Oxidative wear occurs at low sliding speeds and mechanical fracture wear occurs at high sliding speeds.
Ti-Al intermetallic compounds which can be used in gas turbine at elevated temperature were inves-tigated in order to improve oxidation resistance by the formation of protective oxide scale. Four Ti-Al alloys were prepared by plasma arc melting. As the amount of Al was increased among the alloys, oxida-tion resistance was improved by the formation of relatively purer Al2O3 layer. However, the alloys which have less amount of Al formed a duplex layer of Al2O3 and TiO2. When samples were oxidized in pure oxygen instead of air, oxidation resistance was improved because of formation of the purer Al2O3 layer.
From isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests on thermomechanically treated Ti-5%Al, Ti47%Al-4%Cr, and Ti-48%Al-2%Cr-2%Nb alloys at 800, 900, 1000℃ in air, it was found that Ti-48%Al-2%Cr-2%Nb and Ti-47%Al-4%Cr had the best and the worst oxidation resistance, respectively. The oxide scales consisted primarily of TiO₂and Al₂O₃, with and without a small amount of dissolved Cr and 7b ions, depending on the alloy composition. These ions were slightly enriched inside the inner oxide layer, and strongly enriched around the scale-matrix interface. The outer TiO₂-rich layer was formed by the outward diffusion of Ti ions, while the inner (TiO₂+A1₂O₃,) mixed layer was formed by the inward transport of oxygen. The outward movement of Al ions farmed the intermediate Al₂O₃-rich Iayer, above talc prepared alloys.
Alloys of $Ti46\%Al-2\%Mo-2\%Nb$ were oxidized between 800 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air, and their oxidation characteristics were studied. The alloys displayed good oxidation resistance due mainly to the beneficial effects of Mo and Nb. The oxide scales formed consisted primarily of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $Al_{2}O_3-rich$ layer, and an inner mixed layer of ($TiO_{2}+Al_{2}O_3$). Molybdenum and niobium dissolved in the scale effectively improved oxidation resistance. They were mainly distributed in the inner mixed layer of ($TiO_{2}+Al_{2}O_3$).
The mechanical properties of Ti-Al intermetallic compounds which contain Mn, Zr, or Cr as the third element have been evaluated by means of hardness and compression tests. Microstructures have also been examined using an optical microscope. The cast structures of Ti-Al alloys are coarsened and the lamellar volume fraction is increased by the additions of Mn or V, but the cast structures are refined by the addition of Zr. Hardness tests of room temperature and compression tests at $600^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of Ti-Al alloys were mainly dependent on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase, grain size and solid solution hardening. However according to the compression test at $1000^{\circ}C$, the yield strength of Ti-Al alloys decreased with an increase in Mn or Cr content, but increased with an increase in the Zr content.
Alloys of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al(wt%) were oxidized in air between 700 and $900^{\circ}C$. It was found that the oxidation resistance is much better than that of either commercially available pure Ti-6Al-4V(wt%) alloys. The oxide scales were primarily composed of thick Ti-ox-ides which were formed by the inward diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere. At higher temperatures a thin $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ layer was formed on Ti-oxides owing to the outward diffusion of Al from the base alloys. Molybdenum, the noblest metal among the alloy components, was predominantly present behind the oxide-substrate interface. Zirconium, an oxygen active metal, was present at both the oxide layer and the substrate.
Binary Ti-Al alloys containing 50 to 60 atomic percent aluminum are rapidly solidified by hammer anvil method under an argon atmosphere. Constituent phases in each alloy are identified by X-ray diffractometry and microstructures of the alloys are investigated using a transmission electron microscope. In alloys with aluminum content between 50 and 54 percent, a second phase exists besides TiAl(${\gamma}$); this second phase is identified as $Ti_3Al$(${\alpha}2$). The ${\alpha}2$ phase is observed in two types of morphology. One is as fine lamellar alternating with ${\gamma}$ and the other is as a particle. It is concluded that the existence of a metastable phase with the morphologies stated above should arise from a higher quenching rate attained by the hammer anvil method as compared to the conventional roll or splat-quench method. Implications of the above observation are discussed with respect to the phase relations in the Ti-Al binary system; these implications are still controversial in many respects.
The machinability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and tool wear behavior in machining of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was studied to understand the machining characteristics. This material is one of the strong candidate materials in present and future aerospace or medical applications. Recently, their usage has already been broaden to everyday's commercial applications such as golf club heads, finger rings and many decorative items. To anticipate the general use of this material and development of the titanium alloys in domestic facilities, the review and the study of the machining parameters for those alloys are necessary. This study is concentrated to the machining parameters of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy due to their dominant position in the production of titanium alloys.
