The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It also has similar characteristics to Ti in inducing bony ingrowth. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb ($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40 wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.

In this study, the effect of the reinforcement on the wear behaviour and mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was investigated. The Gas atomized hypereutectic Al-20Si alloy powders were mixed with 1, 3, and 5 wt.% AlN and TiC ceramic particles and consolidated by hotpress. The Al-20Si powder has both finely dispersed primary Si phases and eutectic structures. The Al-20Si-AlN, TiC composites showed that the reinforcements were distributed along the boundary of the Al-20Si alloy. The UTS increased with increasing the AlN, TiC contents. At a lower load, with an increasing weight fraction of reinforcements, the wear rate decreased in both composites and the wear mechanism was adhesive wear. At a higher load, the shape of the debris changes the mechanism of the AlN composites to abrasive-adhesion wear and this resulted in an increase of the wear rate.
Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening and microstructural variations found in Ti-Al-Cr ternary $L1_0$- and $L1_2$-phase alloys using transmission electron microscopy. Both the $L1_0$ and $L1_2$ phase alloys harden by aging at 973 K after solution annealing at higher temperatures. The amount of age hardening of the $L1_2$ phase alloy is larger than that of the $L1_0$ phase alloy. The phase separation between $L1_0$ and $L1_2$ phase have not been observed by aging at 973 K. But $Al_2Ti$ was formed in each matrix alloy during aging. The crystal structure of the $Al_2Ti$ phase is a $Ga_2Zr$ type in the $L1_0$ and a $Ga_2Hf$ type in the $L1_2$ phase, respectively. At the beginning of aging the fine coherent cuboidal $Al_2Ti$-phase are formed in the $L1_0$ phase. By further aging, two variants of $Al_2Ti$ precipitates grow along the two {110} habit planes. On the other hand, in the $L1_2$ phase, the $Al_2Ti$ phase forms on the {100} planes of the $L1_2$ matrix lattice. After prolonged aging the precipitates are rearranged along a preferential direction of the matrix lattice and form a domain consisting of only one variant. It is suggested that the precipitation of $Al_2Ti$ in each matrix alloy occurs to form a morphology which efficiently relaxes the elastic strain between precipitate and matrix lattices.
The effect of Zr content on the thermal stability of mechanically alloyed Al-8wt.% (Ti+Zr) alloys was investigated. As the Zr to Ti addition ratio increased the decrease of hardness due to the long time exposure at high temperature reduced so that the thermal stability of the alloy was improved. From the TEM work it was found that the coarsening of precipitates was responsible for the decrease of hardness and the coarsening of precipitates could be suppressed by the addition of Zr, XRD, SAD and EDS analyses confirmed that these precipitates were consisted of DO$\sub$22/, and DO$\sub$23/ type Al$_3$(Ti+Zr) ternary in termetallic compounds. Especially for the DO$\sub$23/ Al$_3$(Ti+Zr), the lattice parameter changed toward the smaller lattice mismatch between the precipitate and Al matrix as the Zr content increased. Therefore, it was considered that the improvement of thermal stability of Al-8wt.% (Ti+Zr) alloys was due to the formation of the ternary Al$_3$( Ti + Zr) intermetallic compounds.

The objective of this study was to determine effects of temperatures and pH of sodium chloride solution with MgCl2 ions on corrosion resistance of duplex stainless-steel X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 (DSS) and Ti 6Al 2Nb1Ta1Mo (Ti). Effects of sodium chloride concentration on corrosion resistance were also studied. Corrosion behavior and pitting morphology of duplex stainless steel (DSS) and Ti alloys were evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that a decrease in pH significantly reduced the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Changes in chloride concentration and temperature had more substantial impact on corrosion behavior of DSS than on Ti alloys. Pitting corrosion was formed on DSS samples under all conditions, whereas crevice corrosion was developed on Ti samples with the presence of magnesium chloride at 90 ℃. In conclusion, magnesium chloride ions in an exceedingly strong acidity solution appear to interact with re-passivation process at the surface of these alloys and influence the resulting surface topography.
The resistance to corrosion of additive manufactured (3D printing) Ti-6Al-4V alloys was investigated using micro-electrochemical tests. In terms of corrosion resistance, the acicular martensitic ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase in such additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V was the focus of attention, and its behavior was distinct from that of conventional subtractive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. To order to identify ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase, XRD tests were performed and micro Vickers hardness was measured for different grains (bright and dark grains) in the additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Micro-electrochemical tests were performed to measure corrosion resistance of bright and dark grains in the additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy with specially designed electrochemical micro-droplet cell. Critical pitting temperature (CPT) measurement was performed to evaluate the resistance to pitting corrosion of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different volumes of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase and subtractive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The dark grains of the laminated Ti-6Al-4V alloy distributed broader than the bright grains measured with low microhardness. The dark grains of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which was rich in martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$, had lower general corrosion and pitting resistance than bright grains. As the fraction of martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase increased, the resistance to the pitting corrosion decreased.
Nanotubular structure formation on the Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-Ta alloy surfaces by electrochemical methods has been studied using the anodizing method. A nanotube layer was formed on Ti alloys in 1.0 M $H_3PO_4$ electrolyte with small additions of $F^-$ ions. The nanotube nucleation and growth of the ${\alpha}$-phase and ${\beta}$-phase appeared differently, and showed different morphology for Cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-Ta alloys. In the ${\alpha}$-phase of Cp-Ti and martensite ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and in the ${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ and ${\beta}$-phase of the Ti-Ta alloy, the nanotube showed a clearly highly ordered $TiO_2$ layer. In the case of the Ti-Ta alloy, the pore size of the nanotube was smaller than that of the Cp-Ti due to the ${\beta}$-stabilizing Ta element. In the case of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the ${\alpha}$-phase showed a stable porous structure; the ${\beta}$-phase was dissolved entirely. The nanotube with two-size scale and high order showed itself on Ti-Ta alloys with increasing Ta content.

$Si_3N_4$ is a ceramic material attracting attention in many fields because of its excellent abrasion resistance. In addition, Ti and TiAl alloys are metals used in a variety of high temperature environments, and have attracted much attention because of their high strength and high melting points. Therefore, study of the interface reaction between $Si_3N_4/Ti$ and $Si_3N_4/TiAl$ can be a useful practice to identify phase selection and diffusion control. In this study, $Si_3N_4/Ti_5Si_3+TiN/TiN/Ti$ diffusing pairs were formed in the $Si_3N_4/Ti$ interfacial reaction and $Si_3N_4/TiN(Al)/Ti_3Al/TiAl$ diffusion pathway was identified in the $Si_3N_4/TiAl$ interfacial reaction. The diffusion layers of the interface reactions were identified and, to investigate the kinetics of the diffusion layer, the integrated diffusion coefficients were estimated.
Ti-13Nb-13Zr (TNZ) alloy has attracted considerable research attention in the last decade as a suitable substitute for the commercially used Ti-6Al-4V (TAV) alloy for orthopedic and dental implant applications. Hence, in the present work, a comparative evaluation has been performed on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of TNZ and TAV alloys in 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution. The result of the study showed that both the alloys had similar electrochemical behavior. The corrosion resistance of TAV alloy is found to be marginally superior to that of TNZ alloy.
