  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.

  • To understand the effect of microstructural factors (i.e., the size of ${\alpha}$ phase, equiaxed vs bimodal structure) on high cycle fatigue (HCF) and fatigue crack propagation (FCP) behaviors of mill-annealed Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloy, three specimens of EQ (equiaxed)-8 (8 indicates the size of ${\alpha}$ grain), BM (bimodal)-8, and BM-16 were studied. The uniaxial HCF and FCP tests were conducted at an R ratio of 0.1 under sinusoidal fatigue loading. The microstructural influence (i.e., EQ vs BM) was not significant on the tensile properties of mill-annealed Ti64 alloy, and showed an increase in tensile strength and elongation with decreasing gauge thickness from 50 mm to 1.3 mm. The microstructure, on the other hand, affected the resistance to HCF substantially. It was found that the EQ structure in mill-annealed Ti64 has better resistance to HCF than the BM structure, as a result of different crack initiation mechanism. Unlike HCF behavior, the effect of microstructural features on the FCP behavior of mill-annealed Ti64 was not significant. Among the three specimens, BM-16 specimen showed the highest near-threshold ΔK value, probably because it had the greatest slip reversibility with large ${\alpha}$ grains. The effect of microstructural factors on the HCF and FCP behaviors of mill-annealed Ti64 alloy are discussed based on fractographic and micrographic observations.

  • Ti alloys have been used for orthopedic devices, automobile and aircraft because it has several beneficial properties such as a low density, a low modulus of elasticity, excellent high-temperature strength, excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. In this study, Ti-64 composition (6 wt% Al, 4 wt% V) is investigated as a representative Ti-alloy system on the crystallographic characteristics and microstructure. We investigated crystal structure of the Ti-64 sample by XRD, and analyzed microstructure by compositional differences measured using FE-SEM and EDX.

  • Titanium or titanium alloy is a widely used implant material according to its certified biocompatibility, sufficient strength and ready availability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens (Ti-29Nb-13Ta, TiNb and Ti-6Al-4V, Ti64) using in vivo and in vitro methods. For in vivo experiment, the specimens were implanted in the abdominal subcutaneous region of female mice for 2 and 4 weeks. The reaction of connective tissue to specimens was evaluated histologically. The specimens were encapsulated by fibrous connective tissue consisting of fibroblast, fibrocyte and other cells including neutrophil, macrophage, giant multinucleated cell and unidentified cells. Some newly formed blood vessels were located in the fibrous capsule surrounding the implant. Cell types and the thickness of fibrous capsules were examined quantitatively. Most of cell types located in the fibrous capsule were fibroblasts and fibrocytes. The average thickness of fibrous capsules for the TiNb specimens was much thinner than that of the titanium alloy, Ti64. The thickness of the fibrous capsule around all titanium specimens decreased at 4 weeks compared to 2 weeks post-implantation. The biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens were also investigated in in vitro method using alkaline phosphatase from MG-63 cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity of the TiNb specimen showed higher activity than the titanium alloy, Ti64. In conclusion, the TiNb alloy with thin capsule thickness in vivo and high alkaline phosphatase activity in vitro will be of considerable use in biomedical applications.

  • The high temperature deformation of mechanically alloyed Al-Ti-Si alloy (Al-9.64wt% Ti-1.56wt% Si) was investigated by performing constant load compression creep tests over the temperature range of $673^\circC$K to $723^\circC$K. From the calculation based on the modified power law creep equation for dispersion strengthened alloy, the true creep activation energy, was 176kJ/mole, the true stress exponent was 4.9. Considering the value of activation energy, stress exponent, the shape of primary creep region, it could be concluded that creep deformation in the MA Al-Ti-Si alloy is controlled by dislocation climb.

  • One-dimensional rutile $TiO_2$ is an important inorganic compound with applicability in sensors, solar cells, and Li-based batteries. However, conventional synthesis methods for $TiO_2$ nanowires are complicated and entail risks of environmental contamination. In this work, we report the growth of $TiO_2$ nanowires on a Ti alloy powder (Ti-6wt%Al-4wt%V, Ti64) using simple thermal oxidation under a limited supply of $O_2$. The optimum condition for $TiO_2$ nanowire synthesis is studied for variables including temperature, time, and pressure. $TiO_2$ nanowires of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$ in length and 100 nm in thickness are richly synthesized under the optimum condition with single-crystalline rutile phases. The formation of $TiO_2$ nanowires is greatly influenced by synthesis temperature and pressure. The synthesized $TiO_2$ nanowires are characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM).

  • Hot-compression tests were carried out to investigate the hot workability of Ti64 and Ti6246 alloys at different temperatures and strain rates. Processing maps were developed on the basis of the dynamic material model unifying the relationship among constitutive behavior, hot workability and microstructure development. Stable regions, defined on the basis of four stability criteria 0${\delta}log(m)/\frac{\bot}{\varepsilon})<0$, s<1 and ${\delta}log(s)/\frac{\bot}{\varepsilon})<0$, were found to be associated with dynamic recovery and recrystallization.

  • HVOF thermal spray coating of micron size Co-alloy powder has been studied for the durability improvement of high velocity spindle (HVS). Optimal coating process of this system for the best surface properties is hydrogen flow rate 75 FMR, oxygen flow rate 38-42 FMR, feed rate 30 g/min at spray distance 5 inch. Friction coefficient (FC) and wear trace (WT) decrease increasing coating surface temperature from 25$^{\circ}$C to 538$^{\circ}$C due to the higher lubricant effects of the oxides at the higher temperature. At the study of adhesion of T800 coating on a light metal alloy Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) tensile bond strength (TBS) and tensile fracture location (TFL) of Ti64/T800 are 8,740 psi and near middle of T800 coating respectively. This shows that adhesion of Ti64/T800 is higher than the cohesion strength (8,740 psi) of T800 coating. Therefore T800 coating is strongly advisable for the surface coating on HVS such as high speed air-bearing spindle.

  • This study is focusing on the improvement of problems of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A new Ti based alloy, Ti-15Sn-4Nb, have designed to examine any possibility of improving the mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $100^{\circ}C$ for 24h. All specimens were solution treated at $812^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10h. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test and immersion test inl%Lactic acid solutions. Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys showed Widmanstatten microstructure after solution treatment which is typical microstructure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ type Ti alloys. Analysing the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys, it was concluded that the passive films of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys are more stable than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Also, the corrosion resistance of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys was improved with adding elements, Hf. It was analysed that the passive film of the Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy which was formed in air atmosphere was consisted of TiO2, SnO and NbO through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis.
