This paper explored the viability of utilising titanium alloy bolts in the construction industry through an experimental programme, where a total of sixty-six titanium alloy (Ti/6Al/4V) bolts were tested under axial tension, pure shear and combined tension and shear. In addition, a series of Charpy V-notch specimens machined from titanium alloy bolts, conventional high-strength steel bolts, austenitic and duplex stainless steel bolts were tested for impact toughness comparisons. The obtained experimental results demonstrated that the axial tensile and pure shear capacities of titanium alloy bolts can be reasonably estimated by the current design standards for steel structures (Eurocode 3, AS 4100 and AISC 360). However, under the combined tension and shear loading conditions, significant underestimation by Eurocode 3 and unsafe predictions through AS 4100 and AISC 360 indicate that proper modifications are necessary to facilitate the safe and economic use of titanium alloy bolts. In addition, numerical models were developed to calibrate the fracture parameters of the tested titanium alloy bolts. Furthermore, a design-based selection process of titanium alloy bolts in the structural applications was proposed, in which the ultimate strength, ductility performance and corrosion resistance (including galvanic corrosion) of titanium alloy bolts was mainly considered.
Failure analyses of the screws in spinal fixation devices were carried out. The fractured screws were retrieved from a patient who had spinal surgery in the thoracic vertebrae from number 10 to 15. The failure occurred one month after the removal of the braces. Microstructures and fracture surfaces were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructures of the screws corresponded to annealed Ti-6Al-4V bar. However, in the vicinity of the screw surface, there was an insufficient number of fine precipitates. Fracture surfaces showed typical fatigue failure modes. Regarding the fact that no machining defects were detected, fatigue crack initiation might have been caused by the lack of precipitates near the screw surfaces. Only the fourth of five fixed screws was severely stress-concentrated by the action of the spinal bones, while the stress of the 4th screw was decreased to half of its acceptable level when the screw was supplemented by one more, which might have been fixed in the 6th vertebra under the 5th position by the switching of its position. The stress simulation was conducted by ANSYS with 3D CAD of PRO/E in order to understand the stress concentration behavior and to provide an effective spinal surgery guide.
Titanium or titanium alloy is a widely used implant material according to its certified biocompatibility, sufficient strength and ready availability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens (Ti-29Nb-13Ta, TiNb and Ti-6Al-4V, Ti64) using in vivo and in vitro methods. For in vivo experiment, the specimens were implanted in the abdominal subcutaneous region of female mice for 2 and 4 weeks. The reaction of connective tissue to specimens was evaluated histologically. The specimens were encapsulated by fibrous connective tissue consisting of fibroblast, fibrocyte and other cells including neutrophil, macrophage, giant multinucleated cell and unidentified cells. Some newly formed blood vessels were located in the fibrous capsule surrounding the implant. Cell types and the thickness of fibrous capsules were examined quantitatively. Most of cell types located in the fibrous capsule were fibroblasts and fibrocytes. The average thickness of fibrous capsules for the TiNb specimens was much thinner than that of the titanium alloy, Ti64. The thickness of the fibrous capsule around all titanium specimens decreased at 4 weeks compared to 2 weeks post-implantation. The biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens were also investigated in in vitro method using alkaline phosphatase from MG-63 cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity of the TiNb specimen showed higher activity than the titanium alloy, Ti64. In conclusion, the TiNb alloy with thin capsule thickness in vivo and high alkaline phosphatase activity in vitro will be of considerable use in biomedical applications.
HVOF thermal spray coating of micron size Co-alloy powder has been studied for the durability improvement of high velocity spindle (HVS). Optimal coating process of this system for the best surface properties is hydrogen flow rate 75 FMR, oxygen flow rate 38-42 FMR, feed rate 30 g/min at spray distance 5 inch. Friction coefficient (FC) and wear trace (WT) decrease increasing coating surface temperature from 25$^{\circ}$C to 538$^{\circ}$C due to the higher lubricant effects of the oxides at the higher temperature. At the study of adhesion of T800 coating on a light metal alloy Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) tensile bond strength (TBS) and tensile fracture location (TFL) of Ti64/T800 are 8,740 psi and near middle of T800 coating respectively. This shows that adhesion of Ti64/T800 is higher than the cohesion strength (8,740 psi) of T800 coating. Therefore T800 coating is strongly advisable for the surface coating on HVS such as high speed air-bearing spindle.
Pure Titanium and alloy have been widely used in dental implants and orthopedics due to their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, due to the biologically inactive nature of Ti metal implants, it cannot bind to the living bone immediately after transplantation into the body. In order to improve the bone bonding ability of titanium implants, many attempts have been made to alter the structure, composition and chemical properties of titanium surfaces, including the deposition of bioactive coatings. The PEO method has the advantages of short experiment time and low cost. These advantages have attracted attention recently. Recently, many metal ions such as silicon, magnesium, zinc, strontium, and manganese have received attention in this field due to their impact on bone regeneration. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation and promotes bone metabolism and growth. Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace metal found in all tissues and is required for normal amino acid, lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. The objective of this work was research on the corrosion behavior of Si, Zn and Mn-doped hydroxyapatite on the PEO-treated surface. Anodized alloys was prepared at 270V~300V voltage in the solution containig Zn, Si, and Mn ions. Ion release test was carried out using potentidynamic and AC impedance method in 0.9% NaCl solution. The surface characteristics of PEO treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and EDS.
Purpose: Various studies have investigated 3-dimensional (3D)-printed implants using Ti6Al-4V powder; however, multi-root 3D-printed implants have not been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to explore the stability of multirooted 3D-printed implants with lattice and solid structures. The secondary outcomes were comparisons between the 2 types of 3D-printed implants in micro-computed tomographic and histological analyses. Methods: Lattice- and solid-type 3D-printed implants for the left and right mandibular third premolars in beagle dogs were fabricated. Four implants in each group were placed immediately following tooth extraction. Implant stability measurement and periapical X-rays were performed every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. Peri-implant bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by micro-computed tomography. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) were measured in histomorphometric analyses. Results: All 4 lattice-type 3D-printed implants survived. Three solid-type 3D-printed implants were removed before the planned sacrifice date due to implant mobility. A slight, gradual increase in implant stability values from implant surgery to 4 weeks after surgery was observed in the lattice-type 3D-printed implants. The marginal bone change of the surviving solid-type 3D-printed implant was approximately 5 mm, whereas the value was approximately 2 mm in the lattice-type 3D-printed implants. BV/TV and BMD in the lattice type 3D-printed implants were similar to those in the surviving solid-type implant. However, BIC and BAFO were lower in the surviving solid-type 3D-printed implant than in the lattice-type 3D-printed implants. Conclusions: Within the limits of this preclinical study, 3D-printed implants of double-rooted teeth showed high primary stability. However, 3D-printed implants with interlocking structures such as lattices might provide high secondary stability and successful osseointegration.
Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are increasingly attractive for high technology components such as aerospace applications and transportations due to their high strength, stiffness, and toughness. Many processes for fabricating MMCs have been developed, and relatively simple Foil-Fiber-Foil method is usually employed in solid state consolidation processes. During the consolidation processes at high temperature, densification occurs by the inelastic flow of the matrix materials, and the process is coupled with the conditions of pressure, temperature and volume fraction of fiber and matrix materials. This is particularly important in titanium matrix composites, and thus a generic model based on micro-mechanical approaches enabling the evolution of density over time to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into FEM so that practical process simulation has been carried out. Further the experimental investigation of the consolidation behavior of SiC/Ti-6Al-4V composites using vacuum hot pressing has been performed, and the results obtained are compared with the model predictions.
The role of microstructure is quite significant in fretting of Ti-6Al-4V since its material properties depend strongly on crystallographic texture. In this study, we adopt crystal plasticity theory with a 2-D planar triple slip idealization to account fur microstructure effects such as grain orientation distribution, grain geometry, as well as $\alpha$ colony size. Crystal plasticity simulations suggest strong implications of microstructure effects at fretting contacts.
