This study was investigated to analyze the antioxidant activity or extracts form Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb for development to the functional materials. The antioxidative activities of water ethanol and methanol extracts from the Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb were analyzed by electron donating ability (EDA), anti-oxidization activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, The superoxide anion radical-scavenging activity, and nitrite scavenging ability. The Etectron donating ability of methanol extract was higher in 1.0 mg/mL of extraction solution than those of ethers. The anti-oxidization activity of ethanol and methanol extracts by thiocyanate method using linolenic acid system was higher than those of the water extract. The SOD-like activity was increased with increase of the extract concentration in each extracts. The SOD-like activity was highest in 2.0 mg/mL of methanol extract. The superoxide anion radical-scavenging activity was increased with increase of the concentration in the ethanol extract and methanol extract. The nitrite scavenging ability of water extracts in 1.0 mg/mL of extraction soiution in pH 1.2 was higher than ethanol extrats and methanol extracts. The nitrite scavenging ability of all extracts was decreased according to increase of pH.
We conducted this study to determine the recommended application rate of fertilizer for Houttuynia cordata Thunb cultivation. The effects of various application levels of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ fertilizers on the growth of this plant were investigated and the associated changes in soil properties were evaluated in the field. Soil pH at harvest time of Houttuynia cordata Thunb did not differ from that before fertilization, whereas EC tended to decrease during cultivation. The soil organic matter (SOM) and available phosphorus increased after treatment, and the amount of applied fertilizer ($P_2O_5$) and available phosphorus were proportional. The nitrogen absorption amount increased in N 100% treatment, but decreased in N 150% treatment. The phosphorus absorption amount rose with the fertilizer treatment concentration until $P_2O_5$ 150% treatment. The amount of absorbed potassium decreased in treatments with $K_2O$ 150% and $K_2O$ 200%. The plant length was the longest in N 100%, $P_2O_5$ 150%, and $K_2O$ 200%. The stem diameter was estimated to be 3.46 - 3.67 mm in N 100 - 200% treatment, 3.55 - 3.67 mm in $P_2O_5$ 100 - 150%, and 3.79 mm in $K_2O$ 200%. The number of tillers did not differ amongst fertilization treatments. The fresh weight was summed to be 3.67 ton/10 a in N 100% treatment, 3.79 Mg/10 a in $P_2O_5$ 150%, and 3.83 Mg/10 a in $K_2O$ 150%. Thus, the relationship between the fertilizer amount and yields of the plant showed that the most economical quantity of fertilizers should be 10.2 N kg/10 a, 5.5 $P_2O_5$ kg/10 a, and 8.2 $K_2O$ kg/10 a for Houttuynia Cordata Thunb.
Clinical and preclinical trials of involving drugs with anti-obesity effects have focused on screening for herbal medicines suspected to have anti-obesity activities. In this study, an extract of Aster scaver Thunb., which was prepared in 80% methanol (ASE), was assessed for its total phenol content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity ability to scavenge the ${\alpha}-{\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-azino-bis-[3-ethylbenzthiazoline]-6-sulfonic acid radical, and anti-adipogenic effects. The anti-adipogenic effect of ASE on the differentiation of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes to adipocytes was investigated by assaying the suppression of adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation by using western blot analysis and the Oil Red-O assay, respectively. The staining results showed that ASE significantly inhibited 3T3-L1. Western blot analysis results showed that ASE decreased the levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-${\gamma}$, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein ${\alpha}$, and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c. These results demonstrate that ASE directly inhibits the differentiation of preadipocytes, and might be an important adjunct in the therapeutic efforts to reduce adipogenesis.
The immune activation and anticancer activities of the water and ethanol extracts from Artemisia capillaris Thunb. were studied. The growth of human hepatocarcinoma and human gastric cancer cell was inhibited by the addition of $1.0\;mg/m{\ell}$ of the water extract, by about 77% and 95%, respectively. The growth of human breast cancer cells was also inhibited by addition of $0.5\;mg/m{\ell}$ of both water and ethanol extracts by 88%. The growth of human normal lung cell, HEL299 was inhibited by 15% indicating very low cytotoxicity of both extracts. Overall selectivity of the both extracts on several human cancer cell line was over 2.5. The growth of both human B and T cells was enhanced up to 1.6 to 2.1 times by adding the ethanol extracts. The secretion of cytokines, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-6, from human B cells was also increased showing $68\;pg/m{\ell}$ and $67\;pg/m{\ell}$, respectively, compared to $35{\sim}40\;pg/m{\ell}$ of the control. In terms of the immune activity, there was not much difference between water and ethanol extracts of Artemisia capillaris Thunb. It implies that the extraction solvent could not differ the biological activities of the extracts. Based on these results, Artemisia capillaris Thunb. can be developed into a potentially useful cancer chemoprentive agent.

The crude ethanol extracts and their solvent-partitioned fractions derived from the leaf and twig of Viburnum dilatatum Thunb. were investigated for their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging efficacy. The results showed that the butanol-soluble fraction ($SC_{50}\;=\;110.30\;{\mu}g/mL$) exhibited higher anti-oxidant activity than the crude ethanol extract ($SC_{50}\;=\;117.03\;{\mu}g/mL$) in the DPPH assay model. Then, the effects of the same extract samples on the production of nitric oxide were examined in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Although the hexane and methylene chloride-soluble fraction showed a weak anti-oxidant activity, they exhibited potent inhibitory activity of NO production above 50 % at a concentration of $10\;{\mu}g/mL$. The hexane-soluble fraction also showed the inhibitory effect on mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such an TNF-$\alpha$, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, iNOS and COX-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7. These results suggest that the solvent extracts of Viburnum dilatatum Thunb. could be used as an anti-irritation ingredient.

Ninety-eight plants were collected from Wan Island, Chollanamdo in Korea and their methanol extracts were obtained. Herbicidal activities of the methanol extracts were determined by seed bioassay using canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Among ninety-eight species, twenty plants were highly herbicidal ($GR_{50}<1,000\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$): Abies holophylla MAXIM., Ailanthus altissima (MILL.) SWINGLE, Anthemis nobilis L., Aralia elata SEEM., Artemisia iwayomogi KITAMURA, Asarum sieboldii MIQ., Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. nippo-oleifera MAKINO, Clematis terniflora DC., Crataegus scabrida SARG., Gnaphalium affine D. DON, Jasminum nudiflorum LINDL., Kalopanax pictus (THUNE.) NAKAI, Machilus japonica S. et Z., Myrica rubra S. et Z., Osmunda japonica THUNB., Phytolacca esculenta V. Houtte, Platanus occidentalis L., Quisqualis indica L., Rubus hirsutus THUNB., Yucca smalliana FERN. Fifty plants were shown moderate herbicidal activity $(1,000\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}, however, twenty-eight plants were not shown any herbicidal activity.
Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Houttuynia cordata Thunb. were investigated to develop a natural food preservative from it. Aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and arginine were major amino acids of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., but were present in a trace amount. Free sugars were composed of glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose and major fatty acids were linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid. Mineral elements were potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper. Antimicrobial activities were shown in acidic, neutral and phenolic fraction of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., but not in basic fraction. Among the four fractions, neutral fraction showed the strongest antimicrobial activities against microorganisms tested, such as Pseudomnas aeruginosa, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus flavus. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum lethal concentration (MLC) of the neutral fraction varied according to microoganisms tested. The lowest values of MIC (0.0075 g eq./mL) and MLC (0.10 g eq./mL) were obtained from Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The purpose of this study is to investigate antioxidant properties in microbial fermentation products of Lonicera japonica Thunb extract. The bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum NHP1 was isolated from conventional fermented foods. Modern pharmacological studies show that Lonicera japonica Thunb and its active principles of wide pharmacological actions. For instance, they show a strong efficacy in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-endotoxin, blood fat reducing, antipyretic, and antioxidant activities. The extract of Lonicera japonica Thunb was obtained by extracting dried Lonicera japonica Thunb using either hot water or 70% ethanol as a solvent. Fermentation was performed in a 2L fermentor containing 1.2 L of extractat conditions of $30^{\circ}C$ and 100 rpm for 48 hr. The amount of cholorogenic acid was $2.65{\mu}g/g$ in hot water extract. The total phenolic content (GAE, gallic acid equivalent) in hot water and 70% ethanol were $56.5{\pm}4.9$ GAE mg/g and $72.7{\pm}5.3$ GAE mg/g, respectively. After fermentation, the phenolic content increased to 30.2% in hot water and 12.9% in ethanol extract. In the same manner, flavonoid content increased to more than 75% regardless of extract solvent. ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) value noticeably increased to 50% after fermentation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ingestion of rabies and ginseng fruit extracts on alcohol hangover, liver damage protection, fatigue recovery, and physical strength improvement. A total of 64 volunteers aged over 20 were participated in this study and the randomized and repeated measures design method was used to divide a group of participants with a random assignment. All participants were divided into 4 groups (n=16) treated with hoveni dulcis thunb extract + ginseng berry extract (ARI 1000), hoveni dulcis thunb extract, ginseng berry extract, and placebo. As a result of respiratory alcohol concentration change, the group treated with ARI 1000 was significantly lower than the group treated with hoveni dulcis thunb extract, ginseng berry extract, and placebo in 1 hour of drinking, and significantly lower than the placebo group in 2 hours and 3 hours of drinking (p<0.05). After 2 and 3 hours of alcohol consumption, blood alcohol concentration of the group treated with rabies ARI 1000 was significantly lower than those of the other 3 groups (p <0.05). In conclusion, ingestion of ARI 1000 before drinking may significantly reduce the respiratory and blood alcohol concentrations, which may induce an effect on the hangover effect.
