Design and Performance Evaluation of a Flow Regulator for Thrust Control of a Liquid Rocket Engine (액체로켓엔진 추력제어를 위한 유량제어밸브의 설계 및 성능 평가)

  • A thrust control valve of a liquid rocket engine plays a role to increase or decrease the thrust of an LRE by modulating the flow rate of propellant into a gas-generator. This paper deals with a flow regulator that has functions of not only modulating thrust but also maintaining constant flow rate regardless of pressure change at inlet or outlet of the flow regulator. A direct acting flow regulator was fabricated and tested for the comparison of experimental and simulation results under steady-state conditions. The drawbacks and limitations of the flow regulator were analyzed. Also the new design of a flow regulator was proposed.

  • The dual-throat nozzle is an extremely effective method in the thrust vectoring control field, utilizing another convergent section to connect with the divergent part of the conventional convergent-divergent nozzle. In the present research, the numerical simulation is conducted to investigate the effects of the injection angle on thrust vectoring performance in a 3D supersonic nozzle. Five injection angles are discussed and core performance variations are analyzed, including the deflection angle, injected mass flow ratio, system resultant thrust ratio, efficiency, Mach number contour and streamline on the symmetry plane, and Mach number contours at different slices. Meaningful conclusions are offered for fighter jet designers.

  • This paper summarizes the activities performed for the development of a BLDC(Brushless Direct Current) motor driven cryogenic thrust control valve with application to KSLV-II rocket engine. The developed thrust control valve can modulate the flow rate of liquid oxygen under cryogenic temperature of 90K and high pressure of 113.2 bar with the help of electro-mechanical actuator driven by a BLDC motor. This valve can be applied to an engine combustion test after minor change because all development certification test have been performed successfully.

  • Recently, fluidic thrust vector control has become a core technique to control multifarious air vehicles, such as supersonic aircraft and modern rockets. Fluidic thrust vector control using the shock vector concept has many advantages for achieving great vectoring performance, such as fast vectoring response, simple structure, and low weight. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics methods are used to study a three-dimensional rectangular supersonic nozzle with a slot injector. To evaluate the reliability and stability of computational methodology, the numerical results were validated with experimental data. The pressure distributions along the upper and lower nozzle walls in the symmetry plane showed an excellent match with the test results. Several numerical simulations were performed based on the shear stress transport(SST) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The effect of the momentum flux ratio was investigated thoroughly, and the performance variations have been clearly illustrated.

  • The linear motor is available for linear transition motion, because of its advantages, the motor design and its application have gradually increased, but the quantitative measurement system of thrust force has not been generalized. Need analysis of correct thrust for control performance improvement of HB-LPM(HB-type Linear Pulse Motor). It is difficult to analyze HB-LPM's thrust. In this paper, HB-LPM's thrust is expressed to mathematical expression. And it is proved validity of this numerical formula by thrust measurement system. Two phase driver is composed. It is verified validity of numerical formula that measure waveform of electric current and voltage that is supplied in each phase.

  • Experimental study for supersonic co-flowing fluidic thrust vectoring control utilizing the secondary flow is performed. The characteristics of the thrust vectoring of two dimensional supersonic flow (Mach 2.0) are studied by Schlieren flow visualization and highly-accurate multi-component force measurements using the load cells. It is observed that the thrust deflection angle initially decreases and increases again forming a V-shaped variation as the pressure of the secondary flow increases. Characteristics of the performance coefficients of the system are also studied, and the detailed operating conditions for higher performance of the technique are suggested.

  • Modern version of advanced supersonic fighter have ATCS (Automatic Thrust Control System) to maximum flight safety, fuel efficiency and mission capability the integrated advanced autopilot system such as TFS (Terrain Following System), GCAS (Ground Collision Avoidance System) and AARS (Automatic Attitude Recovery System) and etc. This paper addresses the design and verification of ATCS based on advanced supersonic trainer in HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulator) with minimum hardware modification to reduce of development cost and maintain of system reliability. The function of ATCS is consisted of target speed hold mode in UA (Up and Away) and angle of attack hold mode in PA (Power Approach). The real-time pilot evaluation reveals that pilot workload is minimized in cruise and approach flight stage by ATCS.

  • The development of the DCS thrust unit during the attitude control thruster of the launch vehicle and guided missile is introduced. The DCS thrust unit using solid propellants based on a two-axis control is designed and through the thermo-structural and flow analysis is designed in detail. The performance of the thrust unit based on the detail design is demonstrated through a combustion test.

  • This paper deals with the difference of the static and kinetic thrust characteristics of a linear pulse motor(LPM) without and with feedback control for a total artificial heart(TAH). In general, the kinetic thrust of LPM without feedback control decreases as increasing the mover velocity. The kinetic thrust characteristics of the LPM with feedback control are improved approximately 30% as compared with the LPM without feedback control in the high velocity range.

Robust Pressure Control of Variable Thrust Solid Propulsion System with Nonlinear Disturbance Observer (비선형 외란관측기를 이용한 가변추력 고체추진기관의 강인 압력제어)

  • In this paper, a mathematical pressure dynamics model for a variable thrust solid propulsion system with an electric actuator was derived from the mass conservation of gas. To solve the problem induced by modeling uncertainties in the propellant model and the dead zone of the actuator, a nonlinear pressure controller combined with a nonlinear disturbance observer was designed using a mathematical model of the system. The simulation results showed that the proposed pressure controller could reduce tracking errors compared to another conventional nonlinear controller even in situations where input disturbances were present.
