The purpose of this study were to examine the effect of high intensity, low frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation at auricular acupuncture points on experimental pain threshold measured at the wrist and to determine the changes in effect over time. Forty-two healthy adult men and women were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups. Group 1(n=15) received TENS to appropriate auricular points for wrist, Group 2(n=12) received TENS to wrist, and Group 3(n=15) received no TENS. We measured experimental pain threshold at the wrist after an electrical stimulus during one pre-treatment and three post-treatment time periods. Group 1 and 2 showed stastically significant increase(p<0.05) in pain threshold after treatment whereas the Group 3 did not. Group 1 showed a significant increase in pain threshold than Group 2. These results suggest that high intensity, low frequency TENS applied to appropriate auricular acupuncture points can increase pain threshold.
To test if exposure history to rifle fire or cannonade training during military duty can induce hearing loss, history of personal military service and histroy of gunshot exposure were asked to 228 male college students with self -administrative questionnaire. Otoscopic examination and Rinne's test were performed if any abnormal finding was detected by pure-tone audiometry. Average hearing threshold levels of 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, 2,000 Hz, 4,000 Hz and threshold levels at 4,000 Hz were calculated for 112 students who were remained after exclusion of cases with history of ear disease, of ototoxic drug administration, and of neuropsychiatric disease, and mean of those were compared between group of students who have completed military duty (completed group) and group of those who have not (not-completed group), and between group exposed (exposed group) and group unexposed to gunshot sound (unexposed group). Mean of average hearing threshold level and mean of threshold levels at 4,000 Hz of completed group and those of exposed group were higher than those of not-completed group and unexposed group, respectively. Proportion of cases that average threshold level was greater than 40 dB or threshold levels at 4,000 Hz was greater than 50 dB were higher also in completed group and exposed group than in duty not-completed group and unexposed group, respectively Multiple linear regression analysis including age, duration of military service, degree of gunshot sound exposure as independant variables and average hearing threshold level as dependant variable, was performed in order to estimate the effect of age on hearing, and any considerable effect of age on hearing could not be found. In conclusion, hearing impairment can be induced by rifle fire or cannonade training.
The channel region of seep-sub-micrometer MOSFET is non-uniformly doped with pocket implant. Therefore, the advanced threshold voltage model is needed to account for the Short-Channel Effect and Reverse-Short-Channel Effect due to the non-uniform doping concentration in the channel region. In this paper, A scalable analytical model for the MOSFET threshold voltage is developed. The developed model is verified with MEDICI and TSUPREM simulator.
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system prevents vehicle from spinning or drifting out mainly by braking intervention. Although a control threshold of conventional VSC is designed by vehicle characteristics and centered on average drivers, it can be a redundancy to expert drivers in critical driving conditions. In this study, a manual adaptation of VSC is investigated by changing the control threshold. A control threshold can be determined by phase plane analysis of side slip angle and angular velocity which is established with various vehicle speeds and steering angles. Since vehicle side slip angle is impossible to be obtained by commercially available sensors, a side slip angle is designed and evaluated with test results. By using the estimated value, phase plane analysis is applied to determine control threshold. To evaluate an effect of control threshold, we applied a 23-DOF vehicle nonlinear model with a vehicle planar motion model based sliding controller. Controller gains are tuned as the control threshold changed. A VSC with various control thresholds makes VSC more flexible with respect to individual driver characteristics.
Purpose: Pain perception is affected by a wide range of contributing factors, including biological, psychological, and social factors. Although the provision of visual information could have a modulatory effect on pain perception, it is unclear whether such a visual effect might vary depending on the anatomical site and stimulation type. This study aimed to analyze the modulatory effect of visual information on the perception of sharp and dull pain in the face and hand and to assess the influence of individual fear levels on modulatory visual information. Methods: A total of 68 healthy male and female volunteers were recruited for this study. Pressure and pricking pain with and without visual information were induced on the masseter and thenar muscles, and alterations in pain threshold were evaluated. The survey was conducted using the Geop-Pain Questionnaire (GPQ). Results: The pricking pain threshold of the hand was significantly elevated when viewing the stimulated hand. This result indicated that the provision of visual information could decrease sensitivity to sharp pain in the hand. However, when correlating the GPQ score with the alteration in thresholds induced by visual information, no significant correlation was observed between the GPQ score and the threshold difference induced by visual information. This finding showed that the visual effect was not significantly affected by the fear level. Conclusions: This study showed that the effect of visual information on the pain threshold could vary according to the anatomical site and stimulation type. A better understanding of such a modulatory effect on pain perception might be useful for clinicians during painful therapeutic procedures.
A depletion-mode MOSFET has been analyzed to evaluate its electrical behavior using a novel 3-D numerical simulation package. The characterizing analysis of the BC MOSFET was performed through short-channel narrow-channel and small-geometry effects that are investigated, in detail, in terms of the threshold voltage. The DIBL effect becomes significant for a short-channel device with a channel length of $<\;3({\mu}m)$. For narrow-channel devices the variation of the threshold voltage was sharp for $<4({\mu}m)$ due to the strong narrow-channel effect. In the case of small-geometry devices, the shift of the threshold voltage was less sensitive due to the combination of the DIBL and substrate bias effects, as compared with that observed from the short-channel and narrow-channel devices. The characterizing analysis of the narrow-channel and small-geometry devices, especially with channel width of $<\;4({\mu}m)$ and channel area of $<\;4{\times}4({\mu}m^2)$ respectively, can be accurately performed only from a 3-D numerical simulation due to their sharp variations in threshold voltages.
This study is designed to investigate the effect of inflow FDI on the host country's economic growth and the role of absorptive capacity in this relationship. Eight developing countries in East Asia, including Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, are analyzed. Year data from 2000 to 2018 are used. Based on the study of Hansen (1999), the panel threshold effect model is used, and human capital, R&D, and infrastructure are set as absorptive capacity by referring to Wang and Hwang (2013). The analysis results are as follows. It is confirmed that FDI has a positive effect on the economic growth of the host country, and absorption capacity strengthens the relationship between FDI and economic growth in a positive direction. At this time, it appears that a threshold exists for the moderating effect of the absorptive capacity. It presents useful implications for economic growth in developing countries.
In this study, we compared the threshold-voltage extraction methods of accumulation-type JLDG (junctionless double-gate) MOSFETs (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors). Threshold voltage is the most basic element of transistor design; therefore, accurate threshold-voltage extraction is the most important factor in integrated-circuit design. For this purpose, analytical potential distributions were obtained and diffusion-drift current equations for these potential distributions were used. There are the ${\phi}_{min}$ method, based on the physical concept; the linear extrapolation method; and the second and third derivative method from the $I_d-V_g$ relation. We observed that the threshold-voltages extracted using the maximum value of TD (third derivatives) and the ${\phi}_{min}$ method were the most reasonable in JLDG MOSFETs. In the case of 20 nm channel length or more, similar results were obtained for other methods, except for the linear extrapolation method. However, when the channel length is below 20 nm, only the ${\phi}_{min}$ method and the TD method reflected the short-channel effect.
