  • The radiation at $11{\mu}m$ absorbed more than at $12{\mu}m$ when aerosols is loaded in the atmosphere, whereas it will be the other way around when cloud is present. The difference of the two channels provides an opportunity to detect aerosols such as Yellow Sand even with the presence of clouds and at night. However problems associated with this approach arise because the difference can be affected by various atmospheric and surface conditions. In this paper, we has analyzed how the threshold and sensitivity of the brightness temperature difference between two channel (BTD) vary with respect to the conditions in detail. The important finding is that the threshold value for the BTD distinguishing between aerosols and cloud is $0.8^{\circ}K$ with the US standard atmosphere, which is greater than the typical value of $0^{\circ}K$. The threshold and sensitivity studies for the BTD show that solar zenith angle, aerosols altitude, surface reflectivity, and atmospheric temperature profile marginally affect the BTD. However, satellite zenith angle, surface temperature along with emissivity, and vertical profile of water vapor are strongly influencing on the BTD, which is as much as of about 50%. These results strongly suggest that the aerosol retrieval with the BTD method must be cautious and the outcomes must be carefully calibrated with respect to the sources of the error.

  • Road lighting has emerged in importance as an essential system to secure safety and visibility for drivers and pedestrians. According to the Road Lighting Standards (KS A 3701), the luminance uniformity (U0) should be 0.4, the luminance uniformity for lanes (UI) should be 0.5, and a threshold increment (TI) of 10% should be satisfied. In this study, we conducted simulations using the Relux program in which the secondary optical lens was applied to a 21 W engine. Ten LED engines were installed on a two-way four-lane road, and the simulation result satisfied the requirements with U0 0.47, UI 0.63 and TI 8%. The U0, UI, and TI were compared with the angle of the LED streetlight varied in the range of $9^{\circ}{\sim}15^{\circ}$ with $0.5^{\circ}$ intervals. The range was selected as ${\pm}25%$ of the standard inclination angle of $12^{\circ}$ according to the Road Lighting Standard. The U0 was high and the UI and TI were low when the tilting angle was in the range of $9.5^{\circ}{\sim}10.5^{\circ}$. Consequently, an optimum-design of lighting distribution was obtained for the concrete two-way four-lane road when the inclination angle was $9^{\circ}$.

  • Atmospheric correction as a preprocessing work should be performed to conduct accurately landcover/landuse classification using hyperspectral imagery. Atmospheric correction on airborne hyperspectral images was conducted and then the effect of atmospheric correction by comparing spectral reflectance characteristics before and after atmospheric correction for a few landuse classes was analyzed. In addition, land cover classification was first conducted respectively by the maximum likelihood method and the spectral angle mapper method after atmospheric correction and then the results were compared. Applying the spectral angle mapper method, the sea water area were able to be classified with the minimum of noise at the threshold angle of 4 arc degree. It is considered that object-based classification method, which take into account of scale, spectral information, shape, texture and so forth comprehensively, is more advantageous than pixel-based classification methods in conducting landcover classification of the coastal area with hyperspectral images in which even the same object represents various spectral characteristics.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics as a function of splay elastic constants ($K_{11}$) in the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. When $K_{11}$ is increased from 7.7pN to 11.7pN, a maximum transmittance is slightly increased and rising time become a little bit fast. However, operating voltage and threshold voltage is independent. In opposition to rising time, decay time is not affected by $K_{11}$. We already know that $K_{11}$ affects tilt angle of liquid crystals. Therefore, on the occasion of high $K_{11}$, liquid crystals are mainly affected by twist deformation because the higher $K_{11}$, the less tilt angle. In the FFS device, high $K_{11}$ is favorable to reduce tilt angle in on state and thus improve rising response time.

  • Recently, Choe & Cheng (2002) have demonstrated that multiple magnetic flux systems with closed configurations can have more magnetic energy than the corresponding open magnetic fields. In relation to this issue, we have addressed two questions: (1) how much fraction of eruptive solar active regions shows multiple flux system features, and (2) what winding angle could be an eruption threshold. For this investigation, we have taken a sample of 105 front-side halo CMEs, which occurred from 1996 to 2001, and whose source regions were located near the disk center, for which magnetic polarities in SOHO/MDI magnetograms are clearly discernible. Examining their soft X-ray images taken by Yohkoh SXT in pre-eruption stages, we have classified these events into two groups: multiple flux system events and single flux system events. It is found that 74% (78/105) of the sample events show multiple flux system features. Comparing the field configuration of an active region with a numerical model, we have also found that the winding angle of the eruptive flux system is slightly above $1.5{\pi}$.

  • This research focuses on seismic performance of a class of single pier skewed bridges with three different pier-deck connections; skew angles vary from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. A well-documented four span continuous deck bridge has been modeled and verified. Seat-type connections with fixed and sliding bearings plus monolithic pier-deck connections are studied. Shear keys are considered either fully operational or ineffective. Seismic performances of the bridges and the structural components are investigated conducting bidirectional nonlinear time history analysis in OpenSees. Several global and intermediate engineering demand parameters (EDP) have been studied. On the basis of results, the values of demand parameters of skewed bridges, such as displacement and rotation of the deck plus plastic deformation and torsional demand of the piers, increase as the skew angle increases. In order to eliminate the deck collapse probability, the threshold skew angle is considered as $30^{\circ}$ in seat-type bridges. For bridges with skew angles greater than $30^{\circ}$, monolithic pier-deck connections should be applied. The functionality of shear keys is critical in preventing large displacements in the bearings. Pinned piers experience considerable ductility demand at the bottom.

  • Solid-state facilitated, olefin transport membranes were prepared by complexation of poly(styrene-b-iso-prene-b-styrene) (SIS) block copolymer and silver salt. Facilitated olefin transport was not observed up to a silver mole fraction of 0.14, representing a threshold concentration, above which transport increased almost linearly with increasing silver salt concentration. This was because firstly the silver ions were selectively coordinated with the C=C bonds of PI blocks up to a silver mole fraction of 0.20, and secondly the coordinative interaction of the silver ions with the aliphatic C=C bond was stronger than that with the aromatic C=C bond, as confirmed by FT-Raman spectroscopy. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis showed that the cylindrical morphology of the neat SIS block copolymer was changed to a disordered structure at low silver concentrations ($0.01{\sim}0.02$). However, at intermediate silver concentrations ($0.15{\sim}0.20$), disordered-ordered structural changes occurred and finally returned to a disordered structure again at higher silver concentrations (>0.33). These results demonstrated that the facilitated olefin transport of SIS/silver salt complex membrancs was significantly affected by their coordinative interactions and nano-structural morphology.

  • Ion-beam irradiation(IB) on $HfO_2$ surface induced high-performance liquidcrystal(LC) driving at a 1-V threshold with vertical alignment of liquid crystals(LC). The high-k materials Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain LC orientation on ultrathin and high-quality films of $HfO_2$ layers. To analyze surface morphological transition of $HfO_2$ which can act as physical alignment effect of LC, atomic force microscopy images are employed with various IB intensities. The contact angle was measured to elucidate the mechanism of vertical alignment of LC on $HfO_2$ with IB irradiation. Contact angle measurement show the surface energy changes via IB intensity increasing.

  • The objective of this work was finding out the most advisable testing conditions for an effective and robust characterization of the tensile strength (TS) of concrete disks. The independent variables were the loading geometry, the angle subtended by the contact area, disk diameter and thickness, maximum aggregate size, and the sample compression strength (CS). The effect of the independent variables was studied in a three groups of experiments using a factorial design with two levels and four factors. The likeliest location where failure beginning was calculated using the equations that account for the stress-strain field developed within the disk. The theoretical outcome shows that for failure beginning at the geometric center of the sample, it is necessary for the contact angle in the loading setup to be larger than or equal to a threshold value. Nevertheless, the measured indirect tensile strength must be adjusted to get a close estimate of the uniaxial TS of the material. The correction depends on the loading geometry, and we got their mathematical expression and cross-validated them with the reported in the literature. The experimental results show that a loading geometry with a curved contact area, uniform load distribution over the contact area, loads projected parallel to one another within the disk, and a contact angle bigger of $12^{\circ}$ is the most advisable and robust setup for implementation of BT on concrete disks. This work provides a description of the BT carries on concrete disks and put forward a characterization technique to study costly samples of cement based material that have been enabled to display new and improved properties with nanomaterials.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate recruiting order and onset time around shoulder muscle during the push-up according to the body tilting angle. METHODS: Twenty healthy young adult subjects were recruited for this study. They had no neurological and musculoskeletal disease. We used the sEMG for recording onset time of shoulder muscles. Shoulder Muscles were anterior deltoid(AD), posterior deltoid(PD), pectoralis major(PM), upper trapezius(UT). Body tilting angle were measured at 0 degree, 30 degree and 60 degree by using tilting table. Muscles contraction onset time were set by the push-up performed 3 times respectively. Mean of 3 measurements were used. And initiate onset time was decided by the Mean ${\pm}2$ SD in the threshold, more than 25ms. RESULTS: There were significant difference at 0 degree, 30 degree and 60 degree(p<.05). Muscles onset time were same order at 0 degree, 30 degree. UT occurred first of all contraction at 0 degree and 30 degree. And then contracted AD, PD, PM. But, at 60 degree, AD was the first contraction, and PM, UT, PD. CONCLUSION: Muscle recruitment order and onset time according to the body tilting was shown the difference when you do push-up. Therefore, this result, shoulder muscle recruitment pattern of according to the body tilting is different and it has to make effective shoulder exercise program.
