  • Structural changes attending polyacrylonitrile(PAN) upon heating and treating with nucleophilic reagents have been studied for some time and a few authors have studied on the thermal degradation, particularly on the characterization of degradation products in PAN. It is the purpose of this paper to report the kinetic study on the thermal degradation above $250^{\circ}C$ and make some suggestions as to the degradation process and mechanism in PAN. The degradation process in PAN is considered that three reactions are combined in two steps. Random chain scission accompanying the naphthylidine-type ring formation is the first step and the degradation of naphthylidine-type ring occurred as the next step. The reactions in the first step are competitive so that the maximum weight loss on pyrolysis of PAN, under such a condition that the degradation of naphthylidine-type ring is negligible, is depended on the relative reaction rate of these two competitive reactions.

  • In the manufacturing process of joining of aluminum alloy and polymer, the strength of the metal-polymer joining is greatly influenced by the nanostructure of the oxide film. In this study, we investigated the dependence of joining strength on the thickness, structure, pore formation and surface roughness of the formed film. After the two-step anodization process, the surface oxide layer became thinner and rougher resulting in higher joining strength with the polymer. More specifically, after the two-step anodization, the surface roughness, Ra increased from 2.3 to 3.2 ㎛ with pore of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure, and the thickness of the oxide film was thinned from 350 to 250 nm. Accordingly, the joining strength of the aluminum alloy with polymer increased from 23 to 30 MPa.

  • Determining the position and velocity of mobiles is an important issue for efficient handoff and channel allocation in microcell structure. Our early work proposes a technique for estimating the mobile location in the microcellular architecture. This process is based on the three step position estimation which determines the mobile position by gradually reducing the area of the mobile position. Using three step method, the estimator first estimates the locating sector in the sector estimation step, then estimates the locating zone in the zone estimation step, and then finally estimates the locating block in the block estimate step. But this scheme is prone to errors when the mobile is located in the boundary of sectors or tracks. In this paper we propose the enhanced scheme to reduce the estimation error.

  • Micro probe with Ni-Co tip was designed. Unit processes for fabricating the micro probe were developed. We are investigated the micro probe tip using by Ni-Co alloy. One-step and three-step needle was fabricated by plating process, CMP, and photolithography process. The plating thickness was varied by current density and time. Futher data will be extract by different process conditions.

  • The last step in the photocycle of photoactive yellow protein (PYP) is a spontaneous recovery of the dark state from the active state in which the p-coumaric acid chromophore is thermally isomerized, concomitantly with the deprotona- tion of the chtomophore and the refolding of the protein moicty. For the purpose of understanding the mechanism of the thermal back-isomerization, we have investigated the rate-determining step by analyzing mutant PYPs of Met100, which was previously shown to play a major role in facilitating the reaction (1). The mutation to Lys, Leu, Ala, or Glu decelerated the dark state recovery by 1 to 3 three orders of magnitude. By evaluating temperature-dependence and pH-dependence of the kinetics of the dark state recovery, it was found that the retardation by mutations resulted from elevation of the activation enthalpy ( H$\^$┿/) and that the pKa of the chromophore, which was affected by the mutation, is in a linier correlation with the amplitude of the rate constants. It was, therefore, deduced from the correlation that the free energy for crossing the activated state in the dark recovery process is proportional to the free energy for the deprotonation of the chromophore, identifying the rate-determining step as the deprotonation of the chromophore. • Sculptured surface machining plays a vital role in the process of bring new products to the market place. A great variety of products rely on this technology for the production of the dies and moulds used in manufacturing. And, the use of CNC machines and CAD/CAM system has become a vital parts of product development process. The propose of this study is to investigate the effect of cutting parameters on the machinability such as surface roughness and cusp generated in the machining of sculptured surface on a three-axis CNC machining center using the CAD/CAM system. Experimental result showed that: In step down cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became smaller, the cusp height appeared higher. On the other hand, in step over cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became larger, the cusp height appeared higher. In the point of precision machining, step over cutting was more effective. For the minimization of cusp height, step down cutting was effective in larger inclined surface, but step over cutting in smaller inclined surface.

  • This paper investigates the change of mechanical properties and thermal shrinkage in commercial multi-filament PET(polyethylene terephthalate) , namely, regular yarn, POY, DTY and composite yarn. To determine changing the effects of processing steps, these were examined at three steps process simulation conditions. The first step is sizing simulation$(S-1\;step\;:\;130^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under 0.1 gf/d load), the second step is scouring simulation$(S-2\;step\;:\;100^\circ{C}\times20\;min$., boiling water treatment under free tension)and final step is setting simulation$(S-3\;step\;:\;180^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under free tension). Regular yarn in multi-step treatment showed higher shrinkage at S-3 step and DTY showed higher in at S-1 step. While POY was relaxed at S-1 step, composite yarn showed different shrinkage properties depending on composite yarn type. Mechanical properties showed good relationship with shrinkage : high shrinkage makes initial modulus decrease and bleating strain increase. It also makes decreasing yield strain and yield stress decrease.

  • SDAI (Standard Data Access Interface) is an interface specification of accessing various storage systems such as file systems and database management systems for STEP data. Using SDAI, both application program developers and CAD/CAM system developers can be relieved from dealing with STEP physical file or system dependent DBMS operations. In this paper, we present implementations of SDAI on different data models, i.e., relational, extended relational, and object-oriented. In order to implement SDAI, we need to translate the EXPRESS information model into target data models. The schema translation process for three different data models are compared and other implementation issues are discussed.

  • Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies have been widely used to reduce the lead-time and development cost of new products. $VLM-_{ST}$ process has been developed to overcome the currently developed RP technologies such as a large building time, a high building cost, an additional post-processing and a large apparatus cost. $VLM-_{ST}$ process requires an additional human interaction due to the manual stacking and bonding. Hence, building time, building cost and the part quality are dependent on the skill of labor. A novel RP process, fully automated $VLM-_{ST}$ process ($VLM-_{ST}$), has been developed to improve building efficiency of the process and the human dependency of the part. The objective of this work is to propose a $VLM-_{ST}$ process and to develop an apparatus for implementation of the process. $VLM-_{ST}$ process and its apparatus have various technical novelties such as two step cutting using a rotating table, an automatic stacking method using two pilot holes and two reference shapes, a concept of automatic unit shape layer (AUSL), and an automatic bonding using the bonding roller and building magazine. In order to examine the efficiency and the applicability of the proposed process, various three-dimensional shapes, such as a piston, a human head shape and a human bust shape, were fabricated on the apparatus.

  • In general, there are three kinds of methods in analyzing dynamic robust design experiment: loss model approach, response function approach, and response model approach. In this talk, we review the three modeling approaches in terms of several criteria in comparison. This talk also generalizes the response model approach based on a generalized linear model. We develop a generalized two-step optimization procedure to substantially reduce the process variance by dampening the effect of both explicit and hidden noise variables. The proposed method provides more reliable results through iterative modeling of the residuals from the fitted response model. The method is compared with three existing approaches in practical examples.
