  • Impingement jets have been applied in a wide variety of fields as they provide significantly high heat transfer on the impingement-jet stagnation zone. However, the crossflow in an impingement chamber developed by spent wall jets can disrupt and deflect the downstream jets in the array, leading to a decrease in the cooling performance of an array of impingement jets. A numerical analysis is made of the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a corrugated structure that traps the spent air in the corrugations between impingement jets and reduces crossflow effects on downstream jets. All computations are performed by considering a three-dimensional, steady, and incompressible flow by using the ANSYS-CFX 15.0 code. The effects of the configuration parameters of the corrugated structure on crossflow reduction of the array of impingement jets are presented and discussed.

  • After hot rolling, a high-temperature steel plate with a temperature higher than $800^{\circ}C$ is rapidly cooled by multiple circular water jets. In this cooling process, because the temperature of the steel plate is much higher than the boiling point of the cooling water, film-boiling heat transfer occurs and a very thin steam layer forms between the plate surface and the cooling water. The steam layer acts as a thermal resistance that prevents heat transfer between the cooling water and the steel plate. In addition to the film-boiling heat transfer, complex physical phenomena such as the free-surface flow of residual water that accumulated on the material and the material's high-speed motion also occur in the cooling process. In this study, the simultaneous cooling process of the upper and lower sides of a running hot steel strip is investigated using a three-dimensional numerical model and the cooling performances and characteristics of the upper-side cooling and lower-side cooling are compared.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish a standard finite element analysis model of a piston by carrying out three dimensional modeling of a series six-cylindered CNG engine's piston to forecast temperature distribution at stationary state and the following thermal stress and variation, and cross checking it with existing analysis. Also, in order to evaluate the affects of the cooling system to the piston's heat load, the paper analyzed piston's temperature and thermal stress distribution according to the cooling water temperature changes and the following variations. As a result, the maximum temperature was found at the center of the crown in the piston and the maximum thermal stress occurred from the lower part of the piston.

  • Fuel lean reburning method is very attractive way in comparison with conventional reburning method for reducing NOX. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the how flue gas re-circulated, temperature distribution and species concentration is crucial for the design and operation of an effective fuel lean reburning system. For this reason, numerical analysis of fuel lean reburning system is a very important and challenge task. In this work, the effect of fuel lean reburn system on NOX reduction has been experimentally and numerically conducted. Experimental study has been conducted with a 15kW lab scale furnace. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used as main fuel and reburn fuel. To carry out numerical study, the finite-volume based commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT6.3 was used to simulate the reacting flow in a given laboratory furnace. Steady state, three dimensional analysis performed for turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the furnace.

  • A numerical study has been carried out for a solar water heater which consists of double skin solar vacuum tubes. Water is heated as it flows through the coaxial fluid conduit inserted in each tube. The space between the exterior of the fluid conduit and the glass tube is tilled with antifreeze solution. This is to facilitate heat transfer from the solar heated absorber surface to water and to prevent the functional problems due to freezing in frigid weather conditions. A one-dimensional steady state model is fully described which will be used to develop three-dimensional model using STAR-CD. These models could be used efficiently in designing double skin solar collector tubes with different geometrical parameters other than those considered in the present analysis. Results show a good agreement when compared with other experimental data demonstrating the reliability of the one-dimensional model employed.

  • This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the evaluation of a thermal response test using a precast high-strength concrete (PHC) energy pile and a closed vertical system with W-type ground heat exchangers (GHEs). Field thermal response tests (TRTs) were conducted on a PHC energy pile and on a general vertical GHE installed in a multiple layered soil ground. The equivalent ground thermal conductivity was determined by using the results from TRTs. A simple analytical solution is suggested in this research to derive an equivalent ground thermal conductivity of the multilayered soils for vertically buried GHEs. The PHC energy pile and general vertical system were numerically modeled using a three dimensional finite element method to compare the results with TRTs'. Borehole thermal resistance values were also obtained from the numerical results, and they were compared with various analytical solutions. Additionally, the effect of ground thermal conductivity on the borehole thermal resistance was analyzed.

  • The study was focused on the development of computational scheme in three dimensional configurations by applying effective heat capacity model to the numerical procedure in order to predict the temperature profiles of a buried pipeline and the frozen penetration depth(FPD) of a freezing soil medium. To realize this, the investigator conducted the unsteady state heat transfer analysis, using the commercial code ABAQUS, for the freezing granite soil medium including a pipeline in a closed system. The proposed model took into consideration the phase change effect of in situ pore water in the frozen fringe. The comparison of results obtained by the proposed model and the actual performances was valuable in establishing a level of confidence in the application of introduced theory.

  • Recently, gas turbines for power generation adopt multistage DLN(Dry Low NOx) type combustion, where diffusion combustion is applied at low load and, with increase in load, the combustion mode is changed to lean premixed combustion to reduce NOx emissive concentration. However, during the mode changeover from diffusion to premixed flame, unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback, high amplitude combustion oscillations, or thermal damage of combustor parts could frequently occur. In the present study, to apply for the analysis of such unfavorable phenomena, three-dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to compare the detailed flow characteristics and temperature distribution inside the gas turbine combustor before and after combustion mode changeover. The fuel considered here is pure methane gas. A standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function and a P-N type radiation heat transfer model, have been utilized. To analyze the complex geometric effects of combustor parts on combustion characteristics, fuel nozzles, a swirl vane f3r fuel-air mixing, and cooling air holes on the combustor liner wall, are included in this simulation.

  • GDL(Gas Diffusion Layer) is one of the main components of PEM fuel cell. It transports reactants from the channel to the catalyst and removes reaction products from the catalyst to the channels in the flow filed plate. It is known that higher permeability of GDL can make it possible to enhance the gas transport through GDL, leading to better performance. And MEA's temperature is determined by gas and heat transport. In this paper, three dimensional numerical simulation of PEM fuel cell of parallel channel and serpentine channel by the permeability of GDL is presented to analysis heat and mass transfer characteristics using a FLUENT modified to include the electrochemical behavior. Results show that in the case of parallel channel, performance variation with change of permeability of GDL was not so much. This is thought because mass transfer is carried out by diffusion mechanism in parallel channel. Also, in the case of serpentine channel, higher GDL permeability resulted in better performance of PEM fuel cell because of convection flow though GDL. And mass transfer process is changed from convection to diffusion when the permeability becomes low.

  • The method is introduced for estimating the noise source contribution on the noise of PDP TV in a multiple-input system where the input sources may be coherent with each other. By the coherence function method, it is found that the biggest part of the noise source in the PDP TV noise is generated by the PCB boards which consume high power and produce high heat. This analysis is modeled as three-input/single-output system because the noise is generated by three main boards, X-board, Y-board, SMPS that are located close to each other. The coherence function method is proved to be useful tool for identifying of noise source. In this study, Transfer Path Analysis using MDSA is implemented to determine the quantitative noise contribution of each board for PDP TV with the rear case closed and with the rear case open. And the possibility of noise reduction is confirmed through the experimental method that isolates the most contributing board by adding sound-absorbing materials to it.
