  • Three-dimensional description of building structure taking into consideration soil-structure interaction is a very complex problem and solution of this problem is often obtained by using finite element method. However, this method takes a significant amount of computational time and memory. Therefore, an efficient computational model based on subdivision of the structure into building elements such as wall and floor slab elements, plane and three-dimensional joints and lintels, that could provide accurate results with significantly reduced computational time, is proposed in this study for the analysis three-dimensional structures subjected to dynamic load. The examples prove the efficiency and the computing possibilities of the model.

  • In the finite element analysis of metal forming Processes using general Lagrangian formulation, element nodes in the mesh move and elements are distorted as the material is deformed. The excessive degeneracy of mesh interrupts finite element analysis and thus increases the error of plastic deformation energy, In this study, a remeshing scheme using so-called mesh compression method is proposed to effectively analyze the flash which is generated usually in hot forging processes. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, several examples are tested in two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems.

  • Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a spindle system are studied in this paper. Three dimensional model is built for analysis, and the amount of heat generation of bearing and the thermal characteristic values including heat transfer coefficient are estimated. Temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a model are analyzed using the finite element method and the termal boundary values. Numerical results are compared with the measured data. The results show that thermal deformations and temperature distributions of a high precision spindle system can be reasonably estimated using the three dimensional model and the finite element method.

  • The finite element alternating method is extended further for general three dimensional cracks in an isotropic body subjected to the mode I loading. The required analytical solution for a dime dimensional crack in an infinite isotropic body is obtained by solving the integral equations. In order to remove the high singularity in integration, the technique suggested by Keat et al. was used. With the proposed method several example problems are solved in order to check the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis was performed by using the control volume finite-element method for design of a profile extrusion die. Because polymer melt behavior is complicated and cross-sectional shape of the profile extrusion die is changing continuously, the fluid flow within the die must be analyzed three-dimensionally. A commercially available polypropylene is used for theoretical and experimental investigations. Material properties are assumed to be constant except for the viscosity. The 5-constant modified Cross model is used for the numerical analysis. A test problem is examined in order to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Simulations are performed for conditions of three different screw speeds and three different die temperatures. Predicted pressure distribution is compared with the experimental measurements and the results of the previous two-dimensional study. The computational results obtained by using three dimensional CVFEM agree with the experimental measurements and are more accurate than those obtained by using the two-dimensional cross-sectional method. The velocity profiles and the temperature distributions within several cross-sections of the die are given as contour plots.

  • The ring rolling process involves three-dimensional non-steady material flow and continuous change of radius and thickness of the ring workpiece. In this study, the deformation analysis and geometric updating algorithm of the ring rolling process were verified by using the three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method. Manufacturing processes for plain ring and T-shaped ring were investigated by comparing experiments with simulation results, especially in side spread, load-stroke and pressure distribution, showing a good agreement. It was concluded that the simulation method would be a useful tool for the design of a ring rolling process.

  • The compression molding of SMC (sheet molding compund) at room temperature was analyzed based on rigid-viscoplastic approach by three dimensional finite element program. The developed program was tested by solving the three dimensional compression of wedge type specimens of aluminum alloys at various processing conditions. The simulation results were compared well to the experimental results available in the literature. based on this comparison the program was proved to be valid and was further applied in solving compression molding of SMC, which is a thermosetting material reinforced with chopped fiber glass. To investigate the effects of friction conditions and mold closing speeds for compression molding of SMC charge at room temperature, compressions of the cylindrical and rectangular shaped SMC were analyzed for various friction conditions and mold closing speeds. The calculated load values were compared to the experimental results for the compression molding of cylindrical specimen.

  • Three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite element is applied to seismic response analysis of an oil storage tank with a floating roof. The fluid element utilized in the present analysis is formulated based on the displacement finite element method considering only volumetric elasticity and its element stiffness matrix is derived by using one-point integration method in order to avoid volumetric locking. The method usually adds a rotational penalty stiffness to satisfy the irrotational condition for fluid motion and modifies element mass matrices through the projected mass method to suppress spurious hourglass-mode appeared in compensation for one-point integration. In the fluid element utilized in the present paper, a small hourglass stiffness is employed. The fluid and structure domains for the objective oil storage tank are modeled by eight-node solid elements and four-node shell elements, respectively, and the transient response of the floating roof structure or the free surface are evaluated by implicit direct time integration method. The results of seismic response analyses are compared with those by other method and the validation of the present analysis using three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite elements is shown.

  • A finite element code for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is parallelized by vertex-oriented domain decomposition. To accelerate the convergence of iterative solvers like conjugate gradient method, parallel block ILU, iterative block ILU, and distributed ILU methods are tested as parallel preconditioners. The effectiveness of the algorithms has been investigated when P1P1 finite element discretization is used for the parallel solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional Laplace equations are calculated to estimate the speedup of the preconditioners. Calculation domain is partitioned by one- and multi-dimensional partitioning methods in structured grid and by METIS library in unstructured grid. For the domain-decomposed parallel computation of the Navier-Stokes equation, we have solved three-dimensional lid-driven cavity and natural convection problems in a cube as benchmark problems using a parallelized fractional 4-step finite element method. The speedup for each parallel preconditioning method is to be compared using upto 64 processors.

  • In this paper, we apply a three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method to simulate an unsteady-state roll forming process. A typical roll forming process is investigated from the standpoint of computer simulation and its realistic analysis model is proposed. The material is considered as bulk material and discretized into hexahedral finite elements. The presented approach is applied to simulating the roll forming process of straight stringer used for aircraft structure.
