This work addresses a three-dimensional nonlinear structural analysis of the constructive phases of a cable-stayed segmental concrete bridge using The Finite Element Method through ANSYS, version 14.5. New subroutines have been added to ANSYS via its UPF customization tool to implement viscoelastoplastic constitutive equations with cracking capability to model concrete's structural behavior. This numerical implementation allowed the use of three-dimensional twenty-node quadratic elements (SOLID186) with the Element-Embedded Rebar model option (REINF264), conducting to a fast and efficient solution. These advantages are of fundamental importance when large structures, such as bridges, are modeled, since an increasing number of finite elements is demanded. After validating the subroutines, the bridge located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and known as "Ponte do Saber" (Bridge of Knowledge, in Portuguese), has been numerically modeled, simulating each of the constructive phases of the bridge. Additionally, the data obtained numerically is compared with the field data collected from monitoring conducted during the construction of the bridge, showing good agreement.
A time domain finite element based method is employed to analyze wave radiation by multiple cylinders. The nonlinear free surface and body surface boundary conditions are satisfied based on the perturbation method up to the second order. The first- and second-order velocity potential problems at each time step are solved through a finite element method (FEM). The matrix equation of the FEM is solved through an iteration and the initial solution is obtained from the result at the previous time step. The three-dimensional (3D) mesh required is generated based on a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid mesh on a horizontal plane and its extension in the vertical direction. The hybrid mesh is generated by combining an unstructured grid away from cylinders and two structured grids near the cylinder and the artificial boundary, respectively. The fluid velocity on the free surface and the cylinder surface are calculated by using a differential method. Results for various configurations including two-cylinder and four-cylinder cases are provided to show the mutual influence due to cylinders on the first and second waves and forces.
To evaluate the effect of interface conditions and retention grooves in the Class V composite resin restoration of the maxillary first premolar, the distribution of the values of stress and displacement was analyzed with the two-dimensional finite element method. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Boundary elements and Stiffness values could be used as the interface parameters in the, finite element method. 2. The amount of restriction of the displacement at the cervical margin by placing a retention groove at the cervical wall was about three times as high as that by placing a retention groove at the occlusal wall. 3. Because of the relative amount of tensile components of the stress values in the bucco-lingual direction, the possibility of dislocation of the restoration was much higher at the cervical margin than at the occlusal margin. 4. It might be recommended that both occlusal and cervical retention grooves be used routinely, but if one, it be placed at the cervical wall.
PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of various cement types on the stress distribution in monolithic zirconia crowns under maximum bite force using the finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The models of the prepared #46 crown (deep chamfer margin) were scanned and solid models composed of the monolithic zirconia crown, cement layer, and prepared tooth were produced using the computer-aided design technology and were subsequently translated into 3-dimensional finite element models. Four models were prepared according to different cement types (zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, glass ionomer, and resin). A load of 700 N was applied vertically on the crowns (8 loading points). Maximum principal stress was determined. RESULTS. Zinc phosphate cement had a greater stress concentration in the cement layer, while polycarboxylate cement had a greater stress concentration on the distal surface of the monolithic zirconia crown and abutment tooth. Resin cement and glass ionomer cement showed similar patterns, but resin cement showed a lower stress distribution on the lingual and mesial surface of the cement layer. CONCLUSION. The test results indicate that the use of different luting agents that have various elastic moduli has an impact on the stress distribution of the monolithic zirconia crowns, cement layers, and abutment tooth. Resin cement is recommended for the luting agent of the monolithic zirconia crowns.

A finite element method is developed for calculating the temperature and enthalpy distribution and accordingly the solid, liquid and mushy zone in a three-dimensional body subjected to any heat boundary conditions. The method concurrently consider both temperature and enthalpy for consideration of the latent heat effect, differently from other methods of using a special energy balance equation for solving a mushy zone. The developed brick element has eight nodes with one degree of freedom at each node. The numerical method and procedure are verified using the results of one and two dimensional analytic solutions and by other researchers. It is shown that the present method presents a consistent and stable results in either abrupt or ranged phase change problems. Moreover, the numerical results by the present method are hardly effected by the calculation time steps which otherwise are difficult to determine in most phase change problems. Finally, as a three-dimensional application, a T-shaped body of a phase change is presented and the temperature and enthalpy variation along the time are solved.
A finite element model based on the incremental endochronic theory for flexible pavement materials was developed in this study. Three grid systems with eight-node cubic isoparametric elements, and different loading steps were used to perform the calculations for a specimen of circular cylinder. The uniaxial stress experimental results on an asphalt mixture at $60^{\circ}C$ in SHRP conducted by University of California at Berkeley were used to check the ability of the derived numerical model. Then, the numerical results showed isotropic response and deviatoric response on the specimen in a three dimensional manner, which provided a better understanding for a deformed flexible material under the specified loading conditions.
A novel finite element model based on the incremental endochronic theory with the effect of temperature was developed in this study to explore the deformed behaviors of a flexible pavement material. Three mesh systems and two loading steps were used in the calculation process for a specimen of three-dimensional circular cylinder. Computational results in the case of an uni-axial compression test for temperatures at $20^{\circ}C$ and at $40^{\circ}C$ were compared with available experimental measurements to verify the ability of developing numerical scheme. The isotropic response and the deviatoric response due to the thermal effect were presented from deformations in different profiles and displacement plots for the entire specimen. The characteristics of changing asphalt concrete material under a specified loading condition might be seen clearly from the numerical results, and might provide an useful information in the field of road engineering.

This paper applies the FE analysis procedure, developed in the Part I of the companion article, to the three-dimensional rubber pad deformation during rubber-pad forming process. Effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompressibility constraint and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are investigated. Laboratory scale experiments support the validity of the developed FE procedure an demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical models. Full scale model responses are also predicted using the reasonable method and parameters obtained in laboratory modeling.

This paper is the first one of two-parted research efforts focusing on the modeling of rubber pad forming process. The rubber pad, driven by the pressurized fluid during the forming process, pushes the sheet metal to solid tool half and forms a part to final shape. In this part of the paper, a numerical procedure for the FE analysis of the rubber pad deformation is presented. The developed three-dimensional FE model is based on the total Lagrangian description of rubber maerial characterized by nearly incompressible hyper-elastic behavior under a large deformation assumption. Validity of the model as well as effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompresibility constraints and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are also demonstrated.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the behavior of tunnel face reinforced with horizontal pipes. A three-dimensional finite element model was adopted in this study to capture the three-dimensional nature of tunnel face behavior under various boundary conditions. A parametric study was peformed on a wide range of boundary conditions with emphasis on the effect of reinforcing layouts on the deformation behavior of tunnel face. The results of analysis such as tunnel face deformation behavior under various conditions were thoroughly analyzed, and a database for the behavior of tunnel face under different reinforcing conditions was established for future development of a semi-empirical design/analysis method for the tunnel face reinforcing technique. The results indicated that there exits an optimum reinforcing layout for a given tunnel condition, which must be selected with due consideration of tunnel geometry and ground condition.
