  • Since the development of Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) by Shi (1984), there has been much improvement in the theory and programs. These, however, are all based on the assumption of a two-dimensional plane strain or plane stress state; and because a rock block system is a three-dimensional problem, a two-dimensional analysis has limited application. So a three-dimensional analysis is required in the design of rock slopes and underground spaces where three-dimensional discontinuities dominate stability. In this study three-dimensional DDA program is developed using the Shi's two-dimensional theory and program, and the two cases of three-dimensional block are analysed. The program is applied to one sliding-face blocks and wedge sliding and it gives the good results comparing to the exact solution. Multi-block cases will be analysed for many other application soon.

  • In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients were measured in tubes with three dimensional roughness. Dimples were made by rotating the saw-tooth shaped finning disc on the outer tube surface. Resultant dimple shape was oval. Friction and heat transfer tests were performed with a range of roughness variables-roughness height 'e', axial roughness pitch 'p', circumferential roughness pitch 'z'. Within the test range, tube with e=0.5mm, z=5mm, p=3mm performed best. The efficiency ratio(rati of the heat transfer improvement and the pressure drop increase) of the tube approached 1.0 at low Reynolds number, and it was higher than that of the two-dimensional roughess tube of the same roughness height. Test data were predicted by 'discrete element method'. Results show that discrete element method underpredicts the friction data by 2% to 32%, and overpredicts the heat transfer data by-12% to 113%.

  • In this study, we presented a novel method to calculate unknown voltages on the floating electrodes introduced in a unit pixel of TFT-LCDs using three-dimensional molecular director simulation. For the simulation of the potential distribution profiles generated under the influence of the floating electrodes, we used the floating boundary condition on the surface enclosing the floating electrodes. The constraint for the floating boundary condition was derived from the charge neutrality condition about the floating electrodes disconnected from voltage sources. For the pixel with the floating electrodes patterned between the pixel and the data electrodes, we simulated the molecular director and the potential distribution in three-dimension, and then observed the location of the disclination lines around the edge of the pixel electrode. As a result, it was revealed that the floating electrodes significantly affect the electro-optical characteristics such as the location of the disclination line.

  • In vehicle accidents, the rolling, pitching, and yawing which are produced by collisions affect the motions of vehicle. Therefore, vehicle behavior under impact situation should be analyzed in three-dimension. In this study, three-dimensional vehicle dynamic equations based on impulse-momentum conservation principles under vehicle impact are introduced for simulation. This analysis has been performed by the real vehicle impact data from JARI and RICSAC. This study suggested each system modeling such as suspension, steering, brake and tire as well as the appropriate vehicle behavior simulation model with respect to pre and post impact.

  • The present study has been preformed to investigate the effect of obstacles around a cooling tower with air-guide to prevent recirculation. The external region as well as the cooling tower are included in the computational domain to analyze the flow phenomena around a cooling tower accurately. Three-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal and unstructured grid system. The standard turbulence model is used to consider the turbulence effect. In order to investigate the recirculation phenomena, flow and temperature fields are calculated with the distance between cooling tower and obstacle, the allocated geometrical type and the air-guide. The moisture fraction rates decrease with increment of the distance between cooling tower and obstacle. The effect of air-guide to reduce the mean recirculation rate is obviously observed.

  • Interior design is an inerdisciplinary field that is in the early stages of theory development, it is necessary to build theoretical frame work for the research. The purpose of this study is to present interior design and guidelines in a three generation family apartment for the elderly, and to develop a theoretical framework on the basis of the human ecosystem approach for analysis of relations between elderly and environment. Analysis and investigations are done by literature review about residential environmental characteristics of the elderly based on the findings of the conceptual analysis. Environmenta elements of interor design related to elderly in a three generation family apartment are as follow ; First, Natural environmental element is orientation, site, temperature, local weather. Second, human behavioral element is privacy , interior design requirement based on physical and psychological effect, housing policy, behavior. Third, Human constructed environmental element is size of apartment space, interior design component, human dimension, aesthetic condition.

  • In order to classify the mechanical phenomena of thermal elasto-plastic behavior on the multi-spot welded joints, this study has tried to carry out three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis on them. However, because the shape of multi-spot welded joints is not taxi-symmetric, unlike the cafe of single-spot welded joint, the solution domain for simulation should be three dimension. Therefore, in this paper, firstly, the three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic program is developed by an iso-parametric finite element method. Secondly, from the results analyzed by developed program, this has clarified mechanical characteristics and their production mechanism on single and multi-spot waled joints. Moreover, it has been intended to make clear effects of pitch length on welding residual stresses, plastic strain of multi-spot welded joints.

  • This study aims to establish the concept about a new approaching method dor remodeling in the planning step. also, this study sets up the way how to approach in a dimensional way by classifying the conceptual composition of the target housing as a method. The dimensional definition is as below. The one dimensional approach: the spot. the two dimensional approach: the line, the three dimensional approach: the apatial mass, the four dimensional approach: space + time, the n dimensional (multi-dimensional) approach: the space + time + emotion. The research findings are as follows : For the purpose of remodeling, the old housing should be viewed in the three dimensional shape and space. It is defined as multi-dimensional module method to design the shape and space of the target housing in a multi-dimensional point, considering the three dimensional space composition, the emotion of the user, the housing itself. and the time of the user.

  • We prove three convex hull theorems on triangles and circles. Given a triangle ${\triangle}$ and a point p, let ${\triangle}^{\prime}$ be the triangle each of whose vertices is the intersection of the orthogonal line from p to an extended edge of ${\triangle}$. Let ${\triangle}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ be the triangle whose vertices are the centers of three circles, each passing through p and two other vertices of ${\triangle}$. The first theorem characterizes when $p{\in}{\triangle}$ via a distance duality. The triangle algorithm in [1] utilizes a general version of this theorem to solve the convex hull membership problem in any dimension. The second theorem proves $p{\in}{\triangle}$ if and only if $p{\in}{\triangle}^{\prime}$. These are used to prove the third: Suppose p be does not lie on any extended edge of ${\triangle}$. Then $p{\in}{\triangle}$ if and only if $p{\in}{\triangle}^{{\prime{\prime}}$.

  • Fly ash enters axial compressor when a turbomachinery is operated in an adverse environment. We have numerically investigated erosion of the blade and shroud in the turbulent compressor passage flow under the influence of gas-particle two-phase interaction. There have appeared quasi-three dimensional calculations on this subject but not the complete three-dimensional gas-particle interaction as done in the present work. Lagrangian particle tracing technique is used on the base of parallel processing for efficient calculation. Accuracy of the present code is tested using the benchmark lPL nozzle. In the DFVLR compressor blades, we have shown that a large number of particles passing through the tip clearance make impact on the blade tip and on the shroud. Higher degree of erosion is resulted by the heavier particles due to the centrifugal force.
