The essay attempts at a critical reading of Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) in terms of character and socio-cultural change. Juxtaposing the story of Michael Henchard's career with the social and economic changes in the agricultural town, it attempts to elaborate on the complex ways in which Hardy relates the old modes of life and thinking to the material culture. Though the novel is centered on the story of Henchard, the Henchard-Farfrae clash represents the conflict of "old" and "new" modes of socio-economic organization and consciousness. The story of the rustic man of character struggling with his contradictory traits of strong will-power and emotional collapse suggests that Hardy's literary representation of the rural community and the rustic protagonist is deeply rooted in historical reality. However, while there is the interlocking of the changes in personal fate and social change, the representation is a "reinvented" literary construction with complex mediation. Despite the narrator's emphasis on Henchard's immutability, peculiarity, and resilience, his character is, in a complex, mediated way, shaped by the material conditions of English rural community in the late 19th century. The mediating role of Elizabeth-Jane as a narrative resolution embodies Hardy's ambivalent historical position concerning the period undergoing change and conflict.

We prove sharp bounds for Hankel determinants for starlike functions f with respect to symmetrical points, i.e., f given by $f(z)=z+{\sum{_{n=2}^{\infty}}}\,{\alpha}_nz^n$ for z ∈ 𝔻 satisfying $$Re{\frac{zf^{\prime}(z)}{f(z)-f(-z)}}>0,\;z{\in}{\mathbb{D}}$$. We also give sharp upper and lower bounds when the coefficients of f are real.

컴퓨터 생성 홀로그램(CGH, Computer Generated Hologram)은 광 홀로그램의 간섭 패턴 대신 3차원 영상을 재생하는데 필요한 정보만을 컴퓨터로 설계 및 제작하기 때문에 물리적으로 존재하지 않는 가상의 물체의 합성 및 생성이 가능하다. 하지만 CGH를 통해 생성된 fringe 영상은 그 데이터양이 방대하기 때문에 저장, 전송 및 처리를 위해서는 데이터양을 줄일 필요성이 있다. 하나의 객체를 나타내기 위한 Fringe 영상의 데이터양을 줄이는 가장 효율적인 방법은 부호화 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 효과적인 부호화를 위해 fringe 영상을 2차원 영상으로 가정한 후에 DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform)에 비해서 좋은 주파수 변환 특성을 보이는 DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform)을 도입하여 Fringe 영상의 주파수 특성을 분석하였다. 그리고 분석된 주파수 특성을 기반으로 Fringe 영상을 웨이블릿 기반의 코덱들을 이용해 압축한 결과 Yoshikawa(2)나 Thomas(3)에 의한 방법에 비해 최대 약 2배의 압축율을 가질 수 있어 Fringe 패턴을 압축하는 좋은 방법이 될 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다.

The six fabliaux of the Canterbury Tales are a notable artistic achievement. Of all of them, however, the Merchant's Tale is the most notable to show Chaucer's development of the scope of this genre. We will look briefly at the characters of the fabliau narrators who are crucial to Chaucer's drama of relationships in the course of the Canterbury pilgrimage framework. To distinguish the accomplishment of the Merchant's Tale, we will consider the relative merits of each of the other five fabliaux in the Canterbury Tales. The least flawed of the fabliau narrators, the Merchant will tell a powerful tale about an old man's lust turned into a hasty marriage gone wrong that aims its satire at the noble ruling class of the land, not the usual targets of Chaucer's or most other writers' fabliaux. Further, unlike the light-hearted and dismissable endings of the other Chaucerian fabliaux, the Merchant's Tale has what we will call an Act 6 of continued deception at all corners of the love triangle represented by the senex amans January, his young wife May, perhaps now pregnant after her tryst with Damyan in the pear tree, and the still present young lover Damyan. This triangle of mutual deception will continue into the unknown future under the male and female forces at odds as personified in the king and queen of fairies, Pluto and Proserpina.

We consider multiscale mortar mixed finite element discretizations for slightly compressible Darcy flows in porous media. This paper is an extension of the formulation introduced by Arbogast et al. for the incompressible problem [2]. In this method, flux continuity is imposed via a mortar finite element space on a coarse grid scale, while the equations in the coarse elements (or subdomains) are discretized on a fine grid scale. Optimal fine scale convergence is obtained by an appropriate choice of mortar grid and polynomial degree of approximation. Parallel numerical simulations on some multiscale benchmark problems are given to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the method.

The atrichomatous wall of ovary in Calotropis procera becomes highly pubescent in the young fruit, but scabrous I the mature fruit. The single layered epicarp develops from the outer epidermis of the ovary wall. The mesocarp which develops from the mesodermis is distinguished into outer, middle and inner zones. The central mesocarp breaks up in the course of fruit development and disintegrate to form large air chambers. The 2-3 layered lignified endocarp develops from the inner epidermis as well as from the inner mesodermis layers of the ground tissue and shows a‘parquetry pattern’of cell arrangement in surface view. The parenchymatous becomes aerenchymatous in the mature fruit. Fruit dehiscence in marginicidal (ventricidal).

The aim of the present study was to determine the changes in mineral retention of broiler chicks fed diets based on wheat, sorghum or maize during the first two weeks post-hatch. The retention of five major minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and magnesium) and four trace minerals (iron, manganese, zinc and copper) was determined on days 3, 5, 7, 9 and 14 of age. The retention coefficients of individual minerals differed widely and the retention coefficients of major minerals were found to be considerably higher than those of trace minerals. Age effects were significant (p<0.05) for all minerals. In general, mineral retention coefficients were highest at day 3, declined to day 7, and remained unchanged to day 14. Decline in mineral retention with age was similar on all three diets. The cereal effect was significant (p<0.05) for several minerals, with a general tendency for the sorghum-based diet to have greater retention than maize- or wheat-based diets.
