Selecting the Optimal Method of Competition Index Computation for Major Coniferous Species in Korea (우리나라 주요 침엽수종의 최적 경쟁지수 모형 선정)

  • This study was carried out to select the optimal method of competition index computation according to the competitor selection methods and distant-dependent competition index models, and to analyze the characteristics of competition indices in terms of thinning intensity and tree density targeting Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi, which are the major coniferous species in Korea. Data was the re-investigated tree information from 240 permanent plots of 80 sites in the stands of P. densiflora, P. koraiensis, and L. kaempferi, which were located in the national forest of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces. The number of subject trees with competition index calculated were 1126 trees for P. densiflora, 4093 trees for P. koraiensis, and 3399 trees for L. kaempferi. For the best competition index computation method, three kinds of competitor selection methods were considered: basal area factor, angle of height, angle of height to crown base. Also, six kinds of competition index models were compared: Lorimer, Martin-EK, Braathe, Heygi, Daniels, and Modified Daniels, which was developed in this study. Correlation coefficient was the best when the competitor selection method of basal area factor $4m^2/ha$ and the competition index model of Modified Daniels were used, and thus, it was selected as the best method for computing competition index. According to the best method by stand characteristics, competition index decreased in all species as thinning intensity was high and tree density was low.

Effect of the Starch Content on the Silicate Dispersion and Rheological Properties of Polypropylene/Starch/Silicate Composites (폴리프로필렌/전분/실리케이트 복합체의 실리케이트 분산 및 유변학적특성에 미치는 전분 함량의 영향)

  • Polypropylene (PP)/corn starch master batch (starch-MB)/silicate composites with different corn starch compositions of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 were prepared by melt compounding at $200^{\circ}C$, using lab scale Brabender mixer. The content of silicate was fixed at 5 wt%. The composition of starch-MB in composites was confirmed by the existence of hydroxy group and peak intensity in fourier-transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrum. The thermal properties of the PP/starch-MB/silicate composites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). There was no district change in melting temperature, and TGA curve indicates a decrease in degradation temperature with the increase of starch-MB content. The silicate dispersion of the composites was measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The degree of silicate dispersion in PP/starch-MB/silicate composites depended on the content of starch-MB. There was detectable change in d-spacing and peak intensity of the composite when the content of starch-MB was higher than 20 wt%. The rheological behavior of the composites was explained by both shear thinning effect and elastic property with the starch-MB amount. These effects were remarkable when the content of starch-MB was higher than 20 wt%. These were confirmed by an oscillatory viscometer at $200^{\circ}C$.

  • Modified T trellis (MT) and Wakeman trellis (WT) were widely used Korean vineyard because they had an advantage for spur pruning type cultivar such as Campbell Early. In this experiment, we compared labor time and intensity for bunch management between MT and WT trellis systems in 'Campbell Early' grapes. As a result, berry thinning was required 17.3 hours (10a) on the WT trellis but was required 12.3 hours (10a) on the MT trellis. In like manner, bagging was required 10.1 hours (10a) on the WT trellis but was required 8.2 hours (10a) on the MT trellis. On the other hand, labor intensity measured on berry thinning and bagging practices using REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) index, then WT trellis was scored 13.0, but MT trellis was scored 8.6. Meanwhile, MT trellis reduced vigorous growing of internodes length and width on grapevine shoots. Consequently, MT trellis is more convenience trellis for working ergonomically in Korea vineyard.

Thinning Intensity Effects on Carbon Storage of Soil, Forest Floor and Coarse Woody Debris in Pinus densiflora Stands (간벌 강도가 소나무림의 토양, 낙엽층 및 고사목 탄소 저장량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the change in carbon (C) storage of soil, forest floor and coarse woody debris (CWD) for different thinning intensities in Pinus densiflora stands 4 years after the treatment. Two study stands were located in Jeongseon (Stand 1) and Gwangneung Experiment Forest (Stand 2). Three plots for different thinning intensities based on stand density were established at each stand in 2008; control plot (0%), T20 plot (20%) and T30 plot (30%) in Stand 1 and control plot (0%), T39 plot (39%) and T74 plot (74%) in Stand 2, respectively. The C storage of soil (0-50 cm), forest floor and CWD was measured in 2012. Total C storage of T30 plot ($109.80t{\cdot}C{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) was significantly higher than that of control plot ($86.69t{\cdot}C{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) in Stand 1. In stand 2, total C storage of T74 plot ($97.02t{\cdot}C{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) was significantly higher than that of control plot ($72.04t{\cdot}C{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) and T39 plot ($63.25t{\cdot}C{\cdot}ha^{-1}$). Total C storage of the heaviest thinned plot was the highest in each study stand. Since this study examined initial effects of thinning on C storage of soil, forest floor and CWD, further studies would be necessary to evaluate the long-term effects.

Axon Extraction Using Vessel Enhancement Filter from a Mitochondria Image Sequence (혈관 증폭 필터를 이용한 미토콘드리아 영상 시퀀스에서의 축색돌기 검출)

  • 미토콘드리아의 수송은 치매, 다형성 경화증, 알츠하이머병 등의 신경성 질환과 관련하여 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 하지만 미토콘드리아 영상의 경우 일반 영상에 비해 노이즈(noise)가 많고 초당 프레임 수(frame-persecond)가 낮기 때문에 분석이 쉽지 않다. 이에 따라 미토콘드리아의 수송 통로인 축색돌기(axon)를 사전에 검출하고자 하는 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 미토콘드리아 영상에서 축색돌기를 자동으로 분리, 검출해내는 알고리즘을 제안한다. 배경이 비해 밝게 착색되어 있다는 미토콘드리아의 특성을 이용하여 축색돌기를 구분하는 데에 최대 화소값 기법(maximum intensity)과 혈관 증폭 필터(vessel enhancement filter)를 이용한다. 두 기법을 통해 얻은 축색돌기의 파편들은 로젠펠드 세선화(rosenfeld thinning)와 선형 보간법(linear interpolation)을 이용하여 연결되고 최종적인 검출 결과를 얻어낸다. 제시된 실험결과는 영상에서 전체적인 축색돌기가 성공적으로 검출되고 있음을 보여준다.

Development of Ground-based GNSS Data Assimilation System for KIM and their Impacts (KIM을 위한 지상 기반 GNSS 자료 동화 체계 개발 및 효과)

  • Assimilation trials were performed using the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) Korea Integrated Model (KIM) semi-operational forecast system to assess the impact of ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) on forecast. To use the optimal observation in data assimilation of KIM forecast system, in this study, the ZTD observation were pre-processed. It involves the bias correction using long term background of KIM, the quality control based on background and the thinning of ZTD data. Also, to give the effect of observation directly to data assimilation, the observation operator which include non-linear model, tangent linear model, adjoint model, and jacobian code was developed and verified. As a result, impact of ZTD observation in both analysis and forecast was neutral or slightly positive on most meteorological variables, but positive on geopotential height. In addition, ZTD observations contributed to the improvement on precipitation of KIM forecast, specially over 5 mm/day precipitation intensity.

Vehicle Recognition with Recognition of Vehicle Identification Mark and License Plate (차량 식별마크와 번호판 인식을 통한 차량인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a vehicle recognition system based on the classification of vehicle identification mark and recognition of vehicle license plate. In the proposed algorithm, From the input vehicle image, we first simulate preprocessing procedures such as noise reduction, thinning etc., and detect vehicle identification mark and license plate region using the frequency distribution of intensity variation. And then, we classify extracted vehicle candidate region into identification mark, character and number of vehicle by using structural feature informations of vehicle. Lastly, we recognize vehicle informations with recognition of identification mark, character and number of vehicle using hybrid and vertical/horizontal pattern vector method. In the proposed algorithm, we used three properties of vehicle informations such as Independency property, discriminance property and frequency distribution of intensity variation property. In the vehicle images, identification mark is generally independent of the types of vehicle and vehicle identification mark. And also, the license plate region between character and background as well as horizontal/vertical intensity variations are more noticeable than other regions. To show the efficiency of the propofed algorithm, we tested it on 350 vehicle images and found that the propofed method shows good Performance regardless of irregular environment conditions as well as noise, size, and location of vehicles.

Change of Stream water Chemistry and Contribution of Subsurface Discharge in Forest Catchment during Storm Events (산림유역내 강우 발생시 계류수질변화와 지중유출수의 기여도)

  • To understand the chemical changes in the streamwater and contribution of subsurface discharge during the storm event, we analyzed electric conductivity (EC), anions, and cations in Gwangneung deciduous and coniferous forest catchment. The stream water samples were collected three times in 2004 by using an auto-sampler: September 7-9 (E040907-D and -C; where D and C indicate deciduous and coniferous forest catchment, respectively), September 11-13 (E040911-D and -C), and September 16-18 (E040916-D and -C). We found a negative relationship between discharge intensity and EC in streamwater. The E040911 and E040916 showed slack change of stream discharge in comparison to E040907 due to contribution of base flow recharged by much precipitation. Moreover, NO/sub 3//sup -/ concentrations in E040911-C were highest, which may have resulted from forest management such as thinning in 2004. The relationship between pH and alkalinity in stream water showed that much of stream water have been recharged through subsurface. We conclude that subsurface discharge highly influences streamwater quality in a forested catchment, and the seperation of stream water discharge is therefore necessary to sustainable water management.

Vehicle Information Recognition and Electronic Toll Collection System with Detection of Vehicle feature Information in the Rear-Side of Vehicle (차량후면부 차량특징정보 검출을 통한 차량정보인식 및 자동과금시스템)

  • In this paper, we proposed a vehicle recognition and electronic toll collection system with detection and classification of vehicle identification mark and emblem as well as recognition of vehicle license plate to unman toll fee collection system or incoming/outcoming vehicles to an institution. In the proposed algorithm, we first process pre-processing step such as noise reduction and thinning from the rear side input image of vehicle and detect vehicle mark, emblem and license plate region using intensity variation informations, template masking and labeling operation. And then, we classify the detected vehicle features regions into vehicle mark and emblem as well as recognize characters and numbers of vehicle license plate using hybrid and seven segment pattern vector. To show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we tested it on real vehicle images of implemented vehicle recognition system in highway toll gate and found that the proposed method shows good feature detection/classification performance regardless of irregular environment conditions as well as noise, size, and location of vehicles. And also, the proposed algorithm may be utilized for catching criminal vehicles, unmanned toll collection system, and unmanned checking incoming/outcoming vehicles to an institution.

Visual Preference Evaluation on Forest Working Systems' Characteristics for Forest Scenic Beauty Management (산림풍치자원관리(山林風致資源管理)를 위한 산림시업특성별(山林施業特性別) 시각선호도(視覺選好度) 평가(評價))

  • This study was conducted to get forest scenic beauty management information toward forest working systems; characteristics in Larix forest stands. 35 different alternatives were simulated to visualize on basis of actual forest working methods. The options were illustrated as photos produced by computer software. Each alternatives were evaluated by 3 groups with total 593 respondents after reliability test. Visual preference evaluation was used 1 - 10 point rating scale. The ratings were scaled using SBE analysis program of RMRATE. To compare the relationship of visual preference and image scale, Spatial images of 13 thinning alternatives were measured by Semantic differential scale. In general, the respondents preferred refreshing and ordering forest stand after forest working to natural forest stand before forest working. Visual preference decreased with the increasing intensity of bare ground area and slash area in forest stand. And also, visual preference was high related to tree density, clear length of stem, and ground vegetation. Farm line of small clear cutting area was preferred straight line to curve line. Visual preferences were significant differences in certain socioeconomic variables of the respondents. Results indicate how to conduct forest working system for forest scenic beauty management.
