Judgment Decision, and Choice in Web Searching Behavior - Information Quality and Cognitive Authority - (웹 탐색과정에서 이용자들의 정보의 판단과 선택 -정보의 질 및 권위를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examines the effects of the judgment of information quality and cognitive authority on Web searching behavior. Sixteen scholars from diverse disciplines participated in the experiments, and the data were collected combining search logs, think-aloud during the searches, and post-search interviews in the laboratory setting. The results identified two distinct kinds of judgment, predictive judgment and evaluative judgment. The facets of judgment and criteria used for making Judgments of quality and authority were analyzed associated with the types of task, status of users, and discipline areas of users.

User Interface Satisfaction of the Air Traffic Control System (항공교통관제시스템에 대한 사용자 인터페이스 만족도 조사)

  • The purpose of study is to investigate the current user interface level of air traffic control system with the usability analysis and satisfaction survey questionnaire on user satisfaction. Think aloud protocol is used to identify not only task analysis, but also the level of user-friendliness of the FIMS and ASDE system, and the user interface questionnaires was conducted by QUIS. We collected data from 6 controllers for Think aloud protocol and 15 controllers for QUIS in Incheon airport. The results showed that the system was the valuable tool for ensuring human performance with the support of memory and the facilitation of decision-making tasks. It helps air traffic controllers perform better and minimize errors in a congested time. The human-computer interface system design, however, was not applied, which led to the increase of workload. Air traffic controller participation in software development provided excellent examples for applications in terms of software in FIMS. Based on these results, the study provided that the usability of system interface was necessary to take into account human factors. Verbal Interaction in Paired Think-Aloud Problem Solving; Comparison of the Characteristics of Small Groups Based on Achievement (해결자·청취자 활동에서의 언어적 상호작용: 성취도에 의한 소집단별 특성 비교)

  • This study investigated the characteristics of verbal interactions of various small groups based on previous achievement in paired think-aloud problem solving. Two classes of a high school were assigned to the homogeneous and heterogeneous groups, and taught on chemistry. Students from homogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$high, mid?id) and heterogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$mid, high${\cdot}$low) were selected, and their algorithmic problem solving on chemical equation and stoichiometry were audio/video taped. In high${\cdot}$high group, solver's 'require agreement' and listener 'agree' were frequently exhibited. On the other hands, listener's 'point out' and solver's 'modify' were frequently exhibited in mid${\cdot}$mid group, which was also observed in the heterogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$mid, high${\cdot}$low). Many verbal interactions were analyzed to be in symmetrical type. In this type, 'require agreement-agree' of high${\cdot}$high group was the most frequent. 'problem solving-agree' of high${\cdot}$high group was the most frequent in the solver-dominant type, while 'point out-modify' of high${\cdot}$low group in the listener-dominant type. The verbal behaviors related to the solving stage were frequently observed, but there were few related to the reviewing stage.

The Generating Processes of Scientific Emotion in the Generation of Biological Hypotheses (생물학 가설의 생성에서 나타난 과학적 감성의 생성 과정)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the generating processes of scientific emotion, that appears during the generation of biological hypotheses. To perform the study, a tentative model was set up through pilot test, a think-aloud training procedure was planned and a standardized interview instrument was developed before getting protocols. In this study, 8 college students were selected to bring out protocol through the method of think-aloud, retrospective debriefing, focused interview and observing. As the result of analysis of the collected protocol through coding scheme, 4 types of process for scientific emotion-generating were sorted out. First type was a basic process which was a feeling process in prior to recognition. Second type was a retrospective process that explains the process of retrospect for emotional memory based on the past. Third type was a cognitive process and it explains emotion that occurs during thinking process to achieve cognitive goal. Fourth type was an attribution process and it explains that emotion is generated in the process of attribution for cognitive goal's achievement. These types of process of scientific emotion-generating can contribute the basis for developing cognitive model of EBL (Emotional Brain-based Learning) strategy.

An Analysis of High School Students' Analogy Generating Processes Using Think-Aloud Method (발성사고법을 활용한 고등학생의 비유 생성 과정 분석)

  • In this study, we investigated high school students' analogy generating processes using the think-aloud method. Twelve high school students in Seoul participated in this study. The students were asked to generate analogies on ionic bonding and were also interviewed after their activities. Their activities and interviews were recorded and videotaped. After classifying the analogy generating processes into the three stages-encoding, exploring sources, and mapping, several process components were identified. The analyses of the results indicated that they checked the target concept given and selected one for a salient attribute among many attributes of the target concept at the stage of encoding. After selecting the salient attribute, they translated the salient attribute that is a scientific term into an everyday term, which is named as 'extracting salient similarities.' At the stage of exploring sources, they chose the sources based on salient similarities and chose the final source through circular processes, which included the process components of 'evaluating the sources' and 'discarding the sources.' At the final stage, they added the attributes to analogs and mapping them to the attributes of the target concept, which is named as 'mapping shared attributes.' There were some cases that 'mapping shared attributes' appeared after they specified the situation of analogs or assumed new situation, which is named as 'specifying the situations.' Some students recognized unshared attributes in their analogs.

Small Group Processes in Paired Think-Aloud Problem Solving (해결자.청취자 문제해결 활동에서의 소집단 과정)

  • This study investigated small group processes in paired think-aloud problem solving. Two high school chemistry classes were assigned to St-SL group (using Strategy-Solve Listener) and SL group (Solver Listener), and their small-group behaviors were audio/video taped. Verbal behaviors of solver and listener in respect to 4 problem-solving stages and performance levels at each stage were analyzed. At the understanding stage, listeners in the St-SL group exhibited more behaviors of agreement to solver's understanding processes about given and goal of problem. As regards recalling a related law at the planning stage, solvers in the St-SL group exhibited more behaviors of modification based on listener's questions or pointing out. These verbal interactions seemed to have a positive effect on students' deriving the physical quantity with the proper laws. Few in both SL and St-SL groups exhibited the behaviors regarding setting up subgoals. No verbal behavior was observed in the SL group at the reviewing stage, and solvers in the St-SL group tended to ask for listener's agreement. However, only few performed the strategy explaining the meaning of answer at the molecular level correctly through the interactions. The St-SL group perceived that the understanding stage was the most helpful and that the planning or reviewing stages were difficult to apply.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 순간적 시간흐름 면담기법과 Think-Aloud 면담기법을 통해 클래식 음악 이용자들의 정보탐색행태를 파악하는 것이다. 이용자들의 정보탐색행태는 키워드 검색, 브라우징, 스마트폰 어플리케이션 활용의 세 가지 행태로 나타났다. 이를 통해 클래식 음악 이용자들이 검색과정에 겪는 문제점을 파악하고, 향후 이용자의 요구사항을 반영한 클래식음악 검색시스템 설계에 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

An Evaluation of the Navigability of Web-based Mapping Applications (웹 기반 지도서비스의 탐색성 평가연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to evaluate the navigability of three web-based mapping applications and to suggest how to improve the navigability of all web-based mapping applications. With these purposes, this study conducted a web-based survey congruent with a think aloud and systematic observation for individual participants, followed up by a focus group with all participants. Based on the findings, recommendations are proposed for web-based mapping applications that include a standard click and drag panning function in mapping applications, a scaled zooming option, increased text for icons and buttons, and other potential changes to computer hardware for increased navigability in these applications. By improving the navigability of web-based mapping applications, the learning time may be reduced for each application and the speed at which users' geographic information needs are met will be quicker.

Affordance in Consideration of a Feature of Platform Action Game (플랫폼 액션 게임의 특징을 고려한 어포던스)

  • A great many researches on affordance in HCI(Human Computer Interaction), product design, and cognitive science has been done investigated currently. In addition, the concept of affordances has been applied to games in the incremental trying to understand the relationship between gamers and systems. However, there are some problems to apply them to games because many researchers take ease to use, consistency, and usefulness to handle mainly in HCI rather than the property of the game into account. Consequently, the objective of the study is to investigate affordances in consideration of the features of the game, such as fantasy, variety, and fun based on the concept of them suggested in ecological psychology. A protocol analysis was conducted through the think-aloud method on the full gameplay session to platform action game as the basic genre of many game. The result of this research reveals that a static and movable affordances as a fixed state are discovered and transforming continously, appearing, and disappearing affordances as variable states are uncovered, and physical and cognitive affordances are observed. The result of this research is expected to propose the essential design guideline on the methodology of game design.

A User Study on Information Searching Behaviors for Designing User-centered Query Interface of Content-Based Music Information Retrieval System (내용기반 음악정보 검색시스템을 위한 이용자 중심의 질의 인터페이스 설계에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to observe and analyze information searching behaviors of various user groups in different access modes for designing user-centered query interface of content-based Music Information Retrieval System(MIRS). Two expert groups and two non-expert groups were recruited for this research. The data gathering techniques employed in this study were in-depth interviewing, participant observation, searching task experiments, think-aloud protocols, and post-search surveys. Expert users, especially majoring in music theory, preferred to input exact notes one by one using the devices such as keyboard and musical score. On the other hand, non-expert users preferred to input melodic contours by humming.
