In this research, an organic thin 13 passivation layer was newly adopted to prefect the organic layer from ambient moisture and oxygen. As the organic thin film passivation layer, poly methyl methacrylate thin films (ppMMA) were deposited using a plasma polymerization technique. In order to their passivation performance for OLEDs, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the ppMMAs were analyzed and luminance-current-voltage (L-I-V)/luminance-time (L-T) characteristics of the OLEDs with and without ppMMA passivation layer were investigated. The OLEDs had a structure of ITO/TPD (HTL)/Alq3(EML&ETL)/Al. The OLED with ppMMA passivation layer showed improved L-T performance than that of without ppMMA passivation layer.
In this paper, the inorganic-organic thin film encapsulation layer was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, Sputter and Spin-Coater system, the various kinds of inorganic and organic thin-films were deposited onto the Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) and their interface properties between organic and inorganic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON and Polyimide(PI) layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR(water vapour transition rate) for PET can be reduced from level of 0.57 g/$m^2$/day (bare subtrate) to $1{\times}10^{-5}$ /$m^2$/day after application of a SiON and Polyimide layer. These results indicates that the SiON/PI/SiON/PI/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

We will discuss and compare the different ways to manufacture high performance Barix coated barrier films as a substrate for displays: R2R vs Batch. It will be shown that the barrier performance of the Barix coating on plastic can be as good as on glass substrates. More then 1000 hrs of testing at 60C/90RH can be passed without degradation of Ca samples

We will introduce our new concept deposition system for SMOLED manufacturing in this conference. This system is designed to deposit organic and metal material to downward to overcome the limit of substrate size and process tact time hurdle for OLED mass production, and is organized with organic deposition chamber, substrate pre-cleaning chamber, metal deposition chamber and encapsulation system. These entire process chambers are integrated with linear type substrate transfer system. We also compare our new SMOLED manufacturing system with conventional vacuum deposition systems, and show basic organic thin film property data, organic material deposition property data, and basic device property.
To study encapsulation method for large-area organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), red emitting OLEDs were fabricated, on which $Alq_3$ as organic buffer layer and LiF and Al as inorganic protective layers were deposited to protect the damage of OLED by epoxy. And then the OLEDs were attached to flat glass by printing method using epoxy. The basic structure of OLED doped with rubrene of 1 vol.% as emitting layer is ITO(150 nm) / 2-TNATA(50 nm) / ${\alpha}$-NPD(30 nm) / $Alq_3$:Rubrene(30 nm) / $Alq_3$(30 nm) / LiF(0.7 nm) / Al(100 nm). In case of depositing $Alq_3$, LiF and Al and then attaching of flat glass onto OLED, current density, luminance, efficiency and driving voltage were not changed and lifetime was increased according to thickness of Al as inorganic protective layers. The lifetime of OLED/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al_4/glass structure was 139 hours increased by 15.8 times more than bare OLED of 8.8 hours and 1.6 times more than edge sealed OLED of 54.5 hours.
In this paper, we investigated the characterization of silicon oxide(SiOx) thin film on Ethylene Terephthalate(PET) substrates by e-beam deposition for transparent barrier application. The temperature of chamber increases from $30^{\circ}C$ to $110^{\circ}C$, the roughness increase while the Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreases. Under these conditions, the WVTR for PET can be reduced from a level of $0.57 g/m^2/day$ (bare subtrate) to $0.05 g/m^2/day$ after application of a 200-nm-thick $SiO_2$ coating at 110 C. A more efficient way to improve permeation of PET was carried out by using a double side coating of a 5-${\mu}m$-thick parylene film. It was found that the WVTR can be reduced to a level of $-0.2 g/m^2/day$. The double side parylene coating on PET could contribute to the lower stress of oxide film, which greatly improves the WVTR data. These results indicates that the $SiO_2$ /Parylene/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.
While the substrate-type solar cells with Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorbers yield conversion efficiencies of up 20%[1], the highest published efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 superstrate solar cell is only 12.8% [2]. The commerciallized Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells are made in the substrate configuration having the stacking sequence of substrate (soda lime glass)/back contact (molybdenum)/absorber layer (Cu(In,Ga)Se2)/buffer layer (cadmium sulfide)/window layer (transparent conductive oxide)/anti reflection layer (MgF2) /grid contact. Thus, it is not possible to illuminate the substrate-type cell through the glass substrate. Rather, it is necessary to illuminate from the opposite side which requires an elaborate transparent encapsulation. In contrast to that, the configuration of superstrate solar cell allows the illumination through the glass substrate. This saves the expensive transparent encapsulation. Usually, the high quality Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber requires a high deposition temperature over 550C. Therefore, the front contact should be thermally stable in the temperature range to realize a successful superstrate-type solar cell. In this study, it was tried to make a decent superstrate-type solar cell with the thermally stable ZnO:Al layer obtained by adjusting its deposition parameters in magnetron sputtering process. The effect of deposition condition of the layer on the cell performance will be discussed together with hall measurement results and current-voltage characteristics of the cells.
In this work, we evaluated the Al2O3 film, which was deposited by atomic layer deposition, degraded by exposure to harsh environments. The Al2O3 films deposited by atomic layer deposition have long been used as a gas diffusion barrier that satisfies barrier requirements for device reliability. To investigate the barrier and mechanical performance of the Al2O3 film with increasing temperature and relative humidity, the properties of the degraded Al2O3 film exposed to the harsh environment were evaluated using electrical calcium test and tensile test. As a result, the water vapor transmission rate of Al2O3 films stored in harsh environments has fallen to a level that is difficult to utilize as a barrier film. Through water vapor transmission rate measurements, it can be seen that the water vapor transmission rate changes can be significant, and the environment-induced degradation is fatal to the Al2O3 thin films. In addition, the surface roughness and porosity of the degraded Al2O3 are significantly increased as the environment becomes severer. the degradation of elongation is caused by the stress concentration at valleys of rough surface and pores generated by the harsh environment. Becaused the harsh envronment-induced degradation convert amorphous Al2O3 to crystalline structure, these encapsulation properties of the Al2O3 film was easily degraded.
Hydrophobic thin films are variously applicable for encapsulation of organic devices and water repulsive glass, etc. In this work, the stability of hydrophobic characteristics of plasma polymerized tetrakis (trimethylsilyloxy) silane (ppTTMSS) thin films were investigated. The films were deposited with plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) on the glass. The deposition plasma power and deposition pressure was 70 W and 600 mTorr, respectively. Thereafter, deposited films were treated by 248nm KrF excimer laser. Stability of hydrophobic properties of plasma polymerized tetrakis(trimethylsilyloxy)silane film surface was tested by excimer laser irradiation, which is thought to simulate severe outdoor conditions. Excimer laser irradiation cycles changed from 10 to 200 cycles. The chemical structure and hydrophobicity of ppTTMSS films were analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and water contact angle (WCA) measurement, respectively. Absorption spectra peaks and WCA of excimer laser treated ppTTMSS films did not change notably. These results show that our ppTTMSS films possess stable hydrophobic properties.
As an insulator for a thin film transistor(TFT) and an encapsulation material of organic light emitting diode(OLED), aluminum oxide (Al2O3) has been widely studied using several technologies. Especially, in spite of low deposition rate, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been used as a process method of Al2O3 because of its low process temperature and self-limiting reaction. In the Al2O3 deposition by ALD method, Ar Purge had some crucial effects on the film properties. After reaction gas is injected as a formation of pulse, an inert argon(Ar) purge gas is injected for gas desorption. Therefore, the process parameter of Ar purge gas has an influence on the ALD deposited film quality. In this study, Al2O3 was deposited on glass substrate at a different Ar purge time and its structural characteristics were investigated and analyzed. From the results, the growth rate of Al2O3 was decreased as the Ar purge time increases. The surface roughness was also reduced with increasing Ar purge time. In order to obtain the high quality Al2O3 film, it was known that Ar purge times longer than 15 sec was necessary resulting in the self-limiting reaction.
