Purpose : This study was to evaluate the influence of slice thickness of computed tomography (CT) and rapid protyping (RP) type on the accuracy of 3-dimensional medical model. Materials and Methods: Transaxial CT data of human dry skull were taken from multi-detector spiral CT. Slice thickness were 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm respectively. Three-dimensional image model reconstruction using 3-D visualization medical software (V-works /sup TM/ 3.0) and RP model fabrications were followed. 2-RP models were 3D printing (Z402, Z Corp., Burlington, USA) and Stereolithographic Apparatus model. Linear measurements of anatomical landmarks on dry skull, 3-D image model, and 2-RP models were done and compared according to slice thickness and RP model type. Results: There were relative error percentage in absolute value of 0.97, 1.98,3.83 between linear measurements of dry skull and image models of 1, 2, 3 mm slice thickness respectively. There was relative error percentage in absolute value of 0.79 between linear measurements of dry skull and SLA model. There was relative error difference in absolute value of 2.52 between linear measurements of dry skull and 3D printing model. Conclusion: These results indicated that 3-dimensional image model of thin slice thickness and stereolithographic RP model showed relative high accuracy.
Pipe wall thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using nondestructive evaluation techniques. Numerous measurements using ultrasonic tests (UTs; one of the nondestructive evaluation technologies) have been performed during scheduled outages in NPPs. Using the thickness measurement data, wall thinning rates of each component are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by the United States Electric Power Research Institute. However, little is known about the conservativeness or reliability of the evaluation methods because of a lack of understanding of the measurement error. In this study, quantitative models for UT thickness measurement deviations of nuclear pipes and fittings were developed as the first step for establishing an optimized thinning evaluation procedure considering measurement error. In order to understand the characteristics of UT thickness measurement errors of nuclear pipes and fittings, round robin test results, which were obtained by previous researchers under laboratory conditions, were analyzed. Then, based on a large dataset of actual plant data from four NPPs, a quantitative model for UT thickness measurement deviation is proposed for plant conditions.
A method for analysis of thin film thickness in spectroscopic reflectometry is proposed. In spectroscopic reflectometry, there has been a trade-off between accuracy and computation speed using the conventional analysis algorithms. The trade-off originated from the nonlinearity of spectral reflectance with respect to film thickness. In this paper, the spectral phase is extracted from spectral reflectance, and the thickness of the film can be calculated by linear equations. By using the proposed method, film thickness can be measured very fast with high accuracy. The simulation result shows that the film thickness can be acquired with high accuracy. In the simulation, analysis error is lower than 0.01% in the thickness range from 100 nm to 4 um. The experiments also show good accuracy. Maximum error is under $40{\AA}$ in the thickness range $3,000-20,000{\AA}$. The experiments present that the proposed method is very fast. It takes only 2.6 s for volumetric thickness analysis of 640*480 pixels. The study suggests that the method can be a useful tool for the volumetric thickness measurement in display and semiconductor industries.

In this study, a new refinement technique for 3-dimensional hexahedral element mesh is proposed, which is aimed at the control of mesh density. With the proposed scheme the mesh is refined adaptively to the elemental error which is estimated by 'a posteriori' error estimator based on the energy norm. A desired accuracy of an analysis i.e. a limit of error defines the new desired mesh density map on the current mesh. To obtain the desired mesh density, the refinement procedure is repeated iteratively until no more elements to be refined exist. In the algorithm, at first the regions of mesh to be refined are defined and, then, the zero-thickness element layers are inserted into the interfaces between the regions. All the meshes in the regions, in which the zero-thickness layers are inserted, are to be regularized in order to improve the shape of the slender elements on the interfaces. This algorithm is tested on a simple shape of 2-d quadrilateral element mesh and 3-d hexahedral element mesh. A numerical example of elastic deformation of a plate with a hole shows the effectiveness of the proposed refinement scheme.

Adaptive analysis of multilayered composite and sandwich plates is carried out. The adaptive analysis is based on a finite element error form, which measures the difference between the through-the-thickness distribution of finite element displacement and the actual displacement. The region where the error-measure exceeds the prescribed admitted error value, the finite element mesh locally refined in the thickness direction using the mesh superposition technique. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the current approach for adaptive analysis of laminated plates.

In this paper, we formulate the mathematical model for a single-stand rolling mill and design control systems for the thickness control at the exit of roll stand and for the tension control of the strip in the process. We propose a thickness controller based on the Internal Model Control structure which can be an effective application when the frequency components of the thickness deviation of the entry strip are known and, show how it can be appropriately combined with BISRA AGC method for a precise thickness control while maintaining the robustness against the modeling error of the mill modulus. It is illustrated by simulations that the proposed thickness control method gives better performance than existing methods and has the robustness against the modeling error of the mill modulus as well.
Recently image display devices have become large and high quality. To control the qualities of the component, measurements of the shape and thickness of a plate glass has been required. In order to measure the shape of the specular objects, Non-Contact Optical Sensor using Hologram laser unit was proposed. The sensor has a optical system that is composed of a Hologram laser and objective lens used for CD Player, and the sensor showed high performance for measuring the shape and thickness of transparent plates. In the sensor, the temperature of the sensor body is controlled by TEC(Thermoelectric Cooler). In this paper, we proposed the measuring method to make better performance of sensor using focus error signal of a hologram laser unit. It can measure the shape and the thickness of transparent objects with the s-type focus error signal which is generated by the sensor while it goes to the object.

This paper investigates the effects of disk thickness and Pemto slider on PES(position error signal) for high TPI(track per inch) drives above 150kTPI at early stage of their development. In order to reduce the disk flutter which becomes a dominant contributor to the TMR, the thicker disks with both 63 and 69mi1 have been used. Also, PES of a Pemto slider with thinner thickness than Pico slider has been estimated to decrease the conversion factor of disk motion in axial direction to head off-track motion. A frequency-domain PES estimation and prediction tool has been developed via measurement of disk flutter and HSA(head stack assembly) forced vibration. It has been validated by the measured PES in drive level. Based on the model and measurement of disk flutter, PES of a drive with the thicker disk and Pemto slider is predicted and their impact is investigated.
A concept of hierarchical modeling, the newest modeling technology, has been introduced in early 1990's. This new technology has a great potential to advance the capabilities of current computational mechanics. A first step to implement this concept is to construct hierarchical models, a family of mathematical models sequentially connected by a key parameter of the problem under consideration and have different levels in modeling accuracy, and to investigate characteristics in their numerical simulation aspects. Among representative model problems to explore this concept are elastic structures such as beam-, arch-, plate- and shell-like structures because the mechanical behavior through the thickness can be approximated with sequential accuracy by varying the order of thickness polynomials in the displacement or stress fields. But, in the numerical, analysis of hierarchical models, two kinds of errors prevail, the modeling error and the numerical approximation error. To ensure numerical simulation quality, an accurate estimation of these two errors is definitely essential. Here, a local a posteriori error estimator for elastic structures with thin domain such as plate- and shell-like structures is derived using the element residuals and the flux balancing technique. This method guarantees upper bounds for the global error, and also provides accurate local error indicators for two types of errors, in the energy norm. Compared to the classical error estimators using the flux averaging technique, this shows considerably reliable and accurate effectivity indices. To illustrate the theoretical results and to verify the validity of the proposed error estimator, representative numerical examples are provided.
