  • In this study, it is presented analysis results of bending problems in the anisotropic cantilever thick plates and the anisotropic laminated cantilever thin plates bending problems. Finite element method in this analysis was used. Both Kirchoff's assumptions and Mindlin assumptions are used as the basic governing equations of bending problems in the anisotropic laminated plates. The analysis results are compared between the anisotropic laminated cantilever thick plates and the anisotropic laminated cantilever thin plates for the variations of thickness-width ratios.

  • The joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the thick aluminum-aluminum joint specimens and thick composite-aluminum single lap adhesive joint specimens were manufactured and the tensile tests were performed. The fracture mode of each specimen was investigated and the modified damage zone theory based on the yield strain was proposed and compared with experimental failure load of each mode. The failure loads of the thick aluminum-aluminum joint and composite-aluminum joint were predicted by the same failure criterion and they could be predicted to within 19.3% using the damage zone ratio method for all 14 cases investigated.

  • Existing test methods for thick-section specimens ( 4mm) have not provided precise compressive properties to date for the analysis and design of thick structure. A survey of the failure behaviour of such thick specimens revealed that the failure initiated at the top corner of the specimen and propagated down and across the width of the specimen as premature failure, not typically reported for thin compression specimens. In the current study, the premature failure was successfully avoided during compressive testing and the failure mode was quite similar regardless of increasing specimen thickness and specimen volume. Failure mode was similar regardless of increasing specimen thickness and specimen volume, i.e. brooming failure mode combined with longitudinal splitting, interlaminar cracking, fibre breakage and kinkband formation (fibre microbuckling). Nevertheless, average failure strengths of the specimens decreased with increasing specimen thicnkiness from 2mm to 8mm with the T800/924C system (36% strength reduction) and specimen volumes from scaling factor I to scaling factor 4 with the IM7/8552 system (46% strength reduction). It was revealed from the literature$^{11}$ that the thickness effect and scaling effect arc caused by manufacturing defects such as void content and fibre waviness.

  • In this study, free vibration analysis of laminated composite parabolic thick plate frames by using finite element method is introduced. Governing equations of an eigenvalue problem are obtained from First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). Finite element method is employed to obtain natural frequency values from the governing differential equations. The frames consist of two flat square plates and one singly curved plate. Parameters like radii of curvature, aspect ratio, ply orientation and boundary conditions are investigated to understand their effect on dynamic behavior of such a structure. In addition, multi-bay structures of such geometry with different stacking order are also taken into account. The composite frame structures are also modeled and simulated via ANSYS to verify the accuracy of the present study.

  • Thick composite disks are utilized in the fast-rotating machines such as turbine disks, flywheels, and so on. The effects of rotating speed on the dynamic characteristics of thick composite disks are deeply studied in this paper. The dynamic governing equations of a rotating composite disk including transverse shear and rotary inertia are derived and then formulated into the finite element equation. Isotropic, circumferentially reinforced disk, and radially reinforced disk are selected for the numerical analysis. The inclusion of the transverse shear and rotary inertia into the governing equation of the rotating disks makes the natural frequency reduced as well as the critical speed. The present results show that the rotation of a thick disk may not reduce the effect of transverse shear and rotary inertia depending on anisotropy, thickness ratio and mode, unlike the results reported in other studies.

  • There has been a growing interest in thick composite materials especially for primary structures. Fiber waviness is one of the manufacturing defects frequently encountered in thick composite structures and affects the mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength significantly. Therefore, nondestructive evaluation technique that can detect fiber waviness of thick composite is very important for the integrity of structures. In this study, efforts were made to understand ultrasonic wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness by adopting the ray and plane wave theories. Both theoretical and experimental investigations were conducted to understand the wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness. The experiments were conducted on specially fabricated thick composite specimens with various degrees of uniform fiber waviness using the conventional through-transmission method to verify the predicted results. The experimental results showed good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

  • To increase the performance of thick-walled cylinders recently their length is continually enlarged. For that reason it is important to reduce weight of the thick-walled cylinders. In this paper the FE models to predict and estimate effects on the composite tapes were created with MSC.Nastran/Patran v.2005. First of all a autofrettage method was applied to the 2D model of the AISI4340 cylinder reduced the thick. And then the comparison of the numerical results with analysis results showed and verified by using T300/5208, IM7/PETI5, IM7/8552 tapes. Those are predicted to the effects of the angle of the composite tapes and elastic modulus according to the composite properties.

  • In the present study, the thermal buckling analysis of thick anisotropic laminated composite plates is carried out using the finite strip method based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. Therefore, this theory yields improved results over the Mindlin plate theory and eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. The critical temperatures of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates are calculated. The effects of several parameters, such as the aspect ratio, the length-to-thickness ratio, the number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence, are investigated.

  • In the present study, a finite strip method for the vibration and stability analyses of anisotropic laminated composite plates is developed according to the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. In comparison with the finite strip method based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the present method gives improved results for very thick plates while using approximately the same number of degrees of freedom. It also eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. A number of numerical examples are presented to show the effect of aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence on the natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and arbitrary angle-ply composite laminates.

  • The cure kinetic equation fur 52-glass/polyester prepreg composites was established through DSC (differential scanning calorimetry). Using the established kinetic equation, the temperature distribution of the thick composite was calculated considering the change of heat transfer resistance due to resin impregnation of bleeder plies used. In order to reduce the overheat during cure of thick glass fiber composites, the cure cycle was modified by introducing the cooling and reheating steps. Then the thick glass composites were cured both by the conventional cycle without any cooling or reheating step and the modified cure cycle. The mechanical properties of the thick composites cured by the both cycles were tested by the short beam shear test and the Barcol hardness test, and then their results were compared.
