The thermomechanical tensile characteristics were evaluated for A12024-T3 under heating rates from $1^{\circ}C/sec\;to\;30^{\circ}C/sec$ by using an infrared heating equipment to simulate aerodynamic heating. The rapid heating test results were compared with tensile test results after 1/2 hour exposure in terms of yield stress to investigate the influence of heating condition. A heating rate-yield temperature parameter was suggested for rapid heating based on time-temperature parameters, and master yield stress curve was obtained by using these parameter. These test results can be used for margin of safety of supersonic vehicle structures subjected to aerodynamic heating.
Magnesium alloys are of emerging interest in the automotive, aerospace and electronic industries due to their light weight, high specific strength, damping capacity, etc. However, practical applications are limited because magnesium alloys have poor formability at room temperature due to the lack of slip systems and the formation of basal texture, both of which characteristics are attributed to the hcp crystal structure. Fortunately, many magnesium alloys, even commercialized AZ or ZK series alloys, exhibit superplastic behavior and show very large tensile ductility, which means that these materials have potential application to superplastic forming (SPF) of magnesium alloy sheets. The SPF technique offers many advantages such as near net shaping, design flexibility, simple process and low die cost. Superplasticity occurs in materials having very small grain sizes of less than $10{\mu}m$ and these small grains in magnesium alloys can be achieved by thermomechanical treatment in conventional rolling or extrusion processes. Moreover, some coarse-grained magnesium alloys are reported to have superplasticity when grain refinement occurs through recrystallization during deformation in the initial stage. This report reviews the characteristics of superplastic magnesium alloys with high-strain rate and coarse grains. Finally, some examples of SPF application are suggested.
Compatability of films made of chitosan, gelatin, and their blends prepared by aqueous solution casting was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan, and thermal stability of chitosan in blends was higher than that of pure chitosan due to interaction among functional groups of component polymers in blend. Glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of blends was dependent on chitosan content of blends. Blend films exhibited good miscibility. Moisture and glycerol contents of blend strongly affected thermal properties of two component polymers.
Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are unique materials with a paramount potential for various applications in bridges. The novelty of this material lies in its ability to undergo large deformations and return to its undeformed shape through stress removal (superelasticity) or heating (shape memory effect). In particular, Ni-Ti alloys have distinct thermomechanical properties including superelasticity, shape memory effect, and hysteretic damping. SMA along with sensing devices can be effectively used to construct smart Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges that can detect and repair damage, and adapt to changes in the loading conditions. SMA can also be used to retrofit existing deficient bridges. This includes the use of external post-tensioning, dampers, isolators and/or restrainers. This paper critically examines the fundamental characteristics of SMA and available sensing devices emphasizing the factors that control their properties. Existing SMA models are discussed and the application of one of the models to analyze a bridge pier is presented. SMA applications in the construction of smart bridge structures are discussed. Future trends and methods to achieve smart bridges are also proposed.

FTMP(friction thermo-mechanical process) is an adaptation of friction stir welding, and can be used as a generic process to modify the microstructure at selective locations. In this study, in order to analyze characteristics of surface modification of ACA4 castings by FTMP, change of rotating speed(R/S) and traveling speed(T/S) of tool were applied as conditional parameter. Analysis of microstructure, hardness, surface roughness and depth of modified zone(MZ) were searched. The best condition were obtained at R/S 600 rpm and T/S 100 mm/min. At this time, hardness was 82 HV, the surface roughness was 0.07 mm and the depth at MZ was 1.72 mm. Free defects microstructure and fine Si particles formation and strong forging effects were analyzed at MZ.

The ultra-fine tungsten carbide(WC) powders have been actively used in the cemented carbides industry, because they have excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness, strength, and toughness. In this study, ultra-fine WC-Co alloys powders have been fabricated by thermochemical and thermomechanical process such as spray conversion process or high energy ball milling. The non-coated end-mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring cutting force, tool wear, tool life, and surface roughness profile according to cutting length. The machining test was conducted with high hardened workpiece and their performances are investigated in high speed cutting conditions. Also, the relationship between the machining characteristics and the Co contents are investigated under various high speed cutting conditions.

Integrating dielectric materials into LTCC is a convenient method to increase the integration density in electronic circuits. To enable co-firing of the high-k and low-k dielectric LTCC materials in a multi-material hetero-laminate, the shrinkage characteristics of both materials should be similar. Moreover, thermal expansion mismatch between materials during co-firing should be minimized. The alternating stacking of an LTCC with silica filler and that with calcium-zirconate filler was observed to examine the use of the same glass in different LTCCs to minimize the difference in shrinkage and thermal expansion coefficient. For the LTCC of silica filler with a low dielectric constant and that of calcium zirconate filler with a high dielectric constant, the amount of shrinkage was examined through a thermomechanical analysis, and the predicted appropriate fraction of each filler was applied to green sheets by tape casting. The green sheets of different fillers were alternatingly laminated to the thickness of 500 ㎛. As a result of examining the junction, it was observed through SEM that a complete bonding was achieved by constrained sintering in the structure of 'calcium zirconate 50 vol%-silica 30 vol%-calcium zirconate 50 vol%'.

Fiber characteristics and fiber distribution of thermomechanical pulp(TMP), bisulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(bisulfite CTMP), neutral sulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(neutral sulfite CTMP) from kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L., Malvaceae) cultivar Tainug-2 cultivated in the reclaimed land of Korea were examined to use effectively nonwood fibers as an alternative raw material sources for papermaking. Yields of TMP and CTMP from kenaf were lower than those of TMP from hardwoods and CTMP from softwoods and hardwoods. Bark fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 ranged 2.04 to 2.30 mm long and $18.7{\sim}19.7{\mu}m$ width. Core fibers averaged 0.63 to 0.80 mm long and $29.5{\sim}31.4{\mu}m$ wide. Coarseness of bark fiber was higher than that of core fiber, and fiber from TMP were higher than those from both bisulfite CTMP and neutral sulfite CTMP. Curl indexes of bark fibers were higher than those of core fibers. However curl indexes were not significantly affected by the pulping conditions. Short fiber distributions were higher in core fibers from TMP and CTMP and long fiber distributions were higher in bark fibers. There was no significant difference in fiber distribution of whole and core fibers obtained from TMP and CTMP, Fibers from neutral sulfite CTMP, however, exhibited a little higher long fiber distribution. Distinct difference in anatomical characteristics was found between core and bast fibers of kenaf plant. Parenchyma cell, pith parenchyma cell and vessel were observed in core fibers and bast fiber in bast sections.

Induction hardening has been used to improve the torsional strength and characteristics of wear for axle shaft that is used to transmit driving torque from the differential to the wheel in automobiles. After the rapid heating and cooling processes of induction hardening are carried out, the shaft has residual stress and material properties change; this affects the allowable transmitted torque. The objective of this study is to predict the distribution of residual stress and estimate the torsional strength of induction-hardened axle shafts with residual stress. In this study, the finite element method is used to study the thermomechanical behavior of the material, and the results are compared with experimental results. The results indicate that the torsional strength of the axle shaft depends on the surface hardening depth and distribution of residual stress.
In the present work, the effect of electron beam irradiation on the chemical and thermal characteristics of cellulose-based jute fibers was explored by means of chemical analysis, electron spin resonance analysis, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and thermomechanical analysis. Jute fiber bundles were uniformly irradiated in the range of 2~100 kGy by a continuous method using a conveyor cartin an electron beam tunnel. Electron beam treatment, which is a physical approach to change the surfaces, more or less changed the chemical composition of jute fibers. It was also found that the radicals on the jute fibers can be increasingly formed with increasing electron beam intensity. However, the electron beam irradiation did not change significantly the chemical functional groups existing on the jute fiber surfaces. The electron beam irradiation influenced the thermal stability and thermal shrinkage/expansion behavior and the behavior depended on the electron beam intensity.
