  • This study investigated the effects of microcapsules on mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite material containing self-healing microcapsules. To this end, tensile specimens and flexural specimens containing melamine-urea-formaldehyde (M-U-F) shell walled microcapsules with diameters of $70{\sim}130{\mu}m$ were manufactured. Varying amount of microcapsules in the specimens was considered: 0 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1.0 wt%. The tensile and flexural tests were conducted to evaluate mechanical properties of the specimens containing the microcapsules and the thermogravimetric analysis test was performed to evaluate the thermal stability of the specimens containing the microcapsules. The results show that the tensile strength of the specimens was sensitive to the amount of the microcapsules compared to the tensile modulus even though the tensile modulus of the specimens was not significantly affected by the amount of the microcapsules. However, reduction of the tensile strength was not linearly proportional to the amount of microcapsules; similar results were observed in the flexural test. The weight changes of the specimens containing the microcapsules, as a function of temperature, were similar to those specimens without microcapsules. The thermal stability of the specimens was not affected significantly by the microcapsules embedded in the specimens.

  • Single-phase barium ferrite powder was synthesized using the sol-gel method. At this time, an attempt was made to find the optimal experimental conditions for the production of single-phase barium ferrite by varying the Fe to Ba molar ratio (Fe/Ba) and the heat treatment temperature. In addition, cobalt-substituted barium ferrite particles were prepared using cobalt, which has an excellent effect on coercivity control for the production of ferrite fine particles having a coercivity of 2.5 to 5.5 kOe for use in high-density magnetic recording media. The changes in the magnetic properties of these were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to observe the synthesis of single-phase, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) were used to analyze the chemical structure and composition. The coercivity of the cobalt-substituted barium ferrite powder was measured by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). As a result, single-phase Barium ferrites were synthesized when the Fe/Ba molar ratio was 10, and the heat treatment temperature was 900 ℃. The coercivity decreased with increasing the amount of Co added. Barium ferrite, having a coercivity of 2.5 to 5.5 kOe for use in high-density magnetic recording media, was synthesized when the Co to Fe(Co/Fe) molar ratio was less than 0.16.

  • Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was carried out for pyrolysis and char-$CO_2$ gasification of low rank Indonesian ABK coal and China lignite. The pyrolysis rate was successfully described by a two-step model adopting the modified Kissinger method. The shrinking core model, when applied to char-$CO_2$ gasification gave initial activation energy of 189.1 kJ/mol and 260.5 kJ/mol for the ABK coal and China lignite, respectively. Thus, the char-$CO_2$ gasification has been successfully simulated by the shrinking core model. In particular, the activation energy of char-$CO_2$ gasification calculated in this work is similar to the results on the anthracite coal, but considerable difference exists when other models or coal types are used.

  • A precursor of lithium manganese oxide was synthesized by mixing $(CH_3)_2CHOLi\;with\;Mn(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ in ethanol using a sol-gel method, then heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C\;and\;800^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere. The condition of heat treatment was determined by thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA). The characterization of the lithium manganese oxide was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical characteristics of lithium manganese oxide electrode for lithium ion battery were measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry and AC impedance method using constant charge/discharge process. The electrochemical behaviors of the electrode have been investigated in a 1.0M $LiClO_4/propylene$ carbonate electrolyte solution. The diffusivity of lithium ions, $D^+\;_{Li}\;^+$, as determined by AC impedance technique was $6.2\times10^{-10}cm^2s^{-1}$.

  • Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.

  • In this study, we have investigated the kinetics on the char-CO2 catalytic gasification reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments were carried out for char-CO2 catalytic gasification of an Indonesian Kideco sub-bituminous. Na2CO3 and K2CO3 were selected as catalysts which were physically mixed with coal. The char-CO2 catalytic gasification reaction showed a rapid increase of carbon conversion rate at 850 ℃, 60 vol% CO2, and 7 wt% Na2CO3. At the isothermal conditions ranging from 750 ℃ to 900 ℃, the carbon conversion rates increased as the temperature increased. Four kinetic models for gas-solid reaction including the shrinking core model (SCM), random pore model (RPM), volumetric reaction model (VRM), and modified volumetric reaction model (MVRM) were applied to the experimental data against the measured kinetic data. The gasification kinetics were suitably described by the MVRM for the Kideco sub-bituminous. The activation energies for each char mixed with Na2CO3 and K2CO3 were found 55-71 kJ/mol and 69-87 kJ/mol.

  • Flame retardant(FR) clothes prohibit additional fire diffusion and make the personnel do their tasks without a hitch in a flammable environment. The existing FR clothes, however, are heavy and give high thermal fatigue. Therefore, it is strongly demanded to develop a light, convenient, and eco-friendly clothes. Recently, many works have been reported to make FR fabrics with phosphorus compounds, but their performance could not satisfy the specified criteria in appraisal standards of domestic and American FR clothes or combat uniforms. In this paper, two kinds of phosphorus compounds were applied to cotton fabric. Graphene oxide functionalized with a phosphorus-rich deep eutectic solvent and ammonium polyphosphate were coated on cotton fabric by eco-friendly padding procedure. The coated fabrics were analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis, vertical flame resistance test(ASTM D6413), cone calorimeter test(ISO 5660-1), and method of test for limited flame spread(ISO 15025). It was revealed that the as-made cotton with those two materials simultaneously had better flame resistance than the cottons with each one. Furthermore, an additional coating for hydrophobicity on the FR cotton was tried for better washing fastness.

  • The thermal degradation kinetics of SBR and tire were studied using a conventional thermogravimetric analysis in the stream nitrogen at a heating rate of 5, 10, 15, $20^{\circ}C/min$, respectively. Thermogravimetric curves and their derivatives were analyzed using various analytical methods to determine the kinetic parameters. The degradation of the SBR and tire was found to be a complex process which has multi-stages. The Friedman method gave average activation energies for the SBR and tire of 247.53kJ/mol and 230.00kJ/mol, respectively. Mean-while, the Ozawa method Eave 254.80kJ/mol and 215.76kJ/mol. It would appear that either. Friedman's differential method or Ozawa's integral method provided satisfactory mathematical approaches to determine the kinetic parameters for the degradation of the SBR and tire. Approximately 86% and 55% of oil products were obtained at a final temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C/min$ for the SBR and tire respectively.

  • Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) gamered increasing interest for their remarkable reinforcement of polymer composites. In this work, we were to produce cellulose whiskers from commercially available microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by acid hydrolysis with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Electron microscopy found that each acid produced sililar cellulose crystals of diameters ranging from 20 to 30 nm and lengths ranging from 200 to 300 nm. Moreover, all samples showed remarkable flow birefringence through crossed polarization filters. Conductometric titration of CNW suspensions revealed that the sulfuric acid treated sample had a surface charge of between 140.00 mmol/kg and 197.78 mmol/kg due to sulfate groups, while that of the hydrochloric acid treated sample was undetectable. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal decomposition temperature and apparent activation energy (evaluated by Broido's method at different stages of thermal decomposition.) of H1-CNW - prepared by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid - was higher than those of S1-CNW and S2-CNW - prepared by hydrolyzing MCC with sulfuric acid.

  • The main objective of this research was conducted to evaluate the impacts on the thermoplastic polymer which is a matrix polymer and the rice husk flour (RHF) which is a reinforcing filler relative to the manufacturing temperature and time when bio-composites were manufactured. In order to evaluate the impacts on the rice husk flour relative to the manufacturing temperature, the rice husk flour was persevered for 10 minutes to 2 hours period at $220^{\circ}C$ temperature which was then added with the polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to complete the manufacturing process of the bio-composites and measure the corresponding mechanical properties. As preserving time increased at $220^{\circ}C$, the tensile and impact strength were decreased due to the thermal degradation of the main components within the rice husk flour. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to measure weight loss caused by the actual manufacturing temperature and the result was that the thermoplastic polymer had not scarcely occurred weight change, but there had been increasing rate of weight loss relative to time for the rice husk flour and the bio-composites under the consistent temperature of $220^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour time period. Therefore, the proper manufacturing temperature and time settings are significantly important features in order to prevent the reduction of mechanical properties which were induced throughout the manufacturing process under the high manufacturing temperature.
