Structure of thermocline, characteristics of stability and intensity of vertical transfer have been studied with hourly oceanographic data in each layers on Line 207 from 1968 to 1969. It is found that a typical thermocline is formed at depths of 10 to 50 meters in summer and early autumn and its core is located near depths of 25 meters. The maximum diffusion coefficient of vertical turbulent is found to be 140$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec at the surface layer(i.e., 0-10 meters), while the minimum is 5$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec at depths of 25 meters, consistent with characteristics of stability and structure of thermocline layers. Our computed diffusion coefficient and stability indicate that the mixing hardly takes place below depths of 80 meters during summer and early autumn, but for the rest of the season mixing could move up to the depth of 50 meters. It appears that the Western Channel of the Korea Strait consist of three different water masses during summer and autumn, and for the rest of the season, two kinds are present.
In shallow water with a thermocline, the characteristics of sound propagation strongly depend on the signal frequency. When only one of the source and the receiver is above the themocline, it is known that the intensity of the received signal changes largely and almost periodically as the signal frequency varies. This is the so-called channel resonance. By using the ray-mode approach, the formula relating the resonance frequency and the sound speed profile is obtained, and the resonance phenomenon is analyzed. Also this analysis is verified by numerical calculation.

The speed of vertical migration and the volume backscattering strength of the scattering layers during the evening and morning transitions between day and night were measured in November 1990-1992 in thermally stratified waters of the East China Sea. Acoustical measurements were carried out using a scientific echo-sounder operating at t재 frequencies of 25 and 100kHz, and using an echo-integration system connected with a micro-computer. Biological sampling was accomplished by bottom trawling to identify fish species recorded on the echo sounder, and the species and length compositions were determined. The values of scattering strength were allocated to group of fishes according to the fish traces on the echo recording paper and the species composition of trawl catches. The vertical velocities of migration derived from the changes in the depths and the values of peak scattering strength of the dense layer vertically migrating toward the bottom or toward the surface. The trawl data suggest that snailfish and fishing frog were the most abundant fishes in all research stations. As sunrise approached, the fish formed a strong concentration just above the thermocline. The the highest values of scattering strength in the entire water column appeared in the depth strata above the thermocline just before the begining of downward migration. As soon as the fish began to migrate downwards across the thermocline, the values of the scattering strength in the depth strata above the thermocline rapidly decreased, while the values for the scattering layer moving slowly toward the bottom gradually increased. During the 1992 surveys, the speed of the vertical migration was estimated to be 0.38m/min in the upward migration and 0.32m/min in the downward migration, respectively. That is the rate of vertical migration was slightly higher at dusk than at dawn. Similar migration patterns were observed on different stations and under different weather conditions during the surveys in 1990.

The author investigated the relation between the catches of tuna species and the distribution of horizontal mean temperature at the Jepth of 10m and of vertical temperture sections in the different fishing grounds, using the date of catches in 1980, showing a relative good ones during six years from 1975 to 1980, and of oceanographic observations. Yellowfin and bigeye are mainly caught in South Equatorial Current regions including equatorial upwelling region in 5$^{\circ}$N to 5$^{\circ}$S, and albacore is mainly caught in Subtropical region in 20$^{\circ}$5 to 40$^{\circ}$5. The good fishing grounds of yellowfin and bigeye are made in the depth layer of 100 m to 250 m and temperature of 15$^{\circ}$C to 26$^{\circ}$C having a smooth gradient of thermocline in the Central Pacific between 180$^{\circ}$ and 1500W. But albacore is caught well in which the temperature of thermocline ranges from 100e to 25$^{\circ}$C and its gradient very smoothly. Approaching to the American Continent, the catches of yellowfin and big eye decrease because the thermocline becomes shallower and steeper at Eastern Pacific Region between 1500 and 800W.
The water temperature from 1980 to 2000 and the anchovy catch from 1990 to 2000 in the southeastern portion of the South Sea of Korea were used to illustrate the influence of water temperature on the catch of the anchovy, Engraulis japonica. 1993 and 1998 were selected as poor and good fishing years therefore, the horizontal and vertical distribution of water temperature and catch per unit effort in these years was compared. When the anchovy catch was lower, the water temperature at 10 m was also about $0-2^{\circ}C$ lower than during a normal year, which resulted in the formation of a weak thermocline. Conversely, when the anchovy catch was higher, the water temperature at 10m was $0-2^{\circ}C$ greater than during a normal year, which resulted in the formation of a strong thermocline at around 20 m.
Internal waves and internal tides occur frequently along the eastern coast of Korea. During the spring-tide period in April 2003, the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) flowed near the Korean East Coast Farming Forecast System (KECFFS; a moored oceanographic measurement system), creating a strong thermocline at the intermediate layer. Weakened stratification and well-mixed water appeared frequently around the KECFFS, with duration of approximately 1 day. The results suggest the following scenario. Baroclinic motion related to the internal tide generated high frequency internal waves around the thermocline. The breaking of those waves then created turbulence around the thermocline. After well-mixed water appeared, a current component with perpendicular direction to the EKWC appeared within the inertial period. The change in stratification around the KECFFS locally broke the geostrophic balance as a transient state. This local vertical mixing formed an ageostrophic current within the inertial period.
Nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) are usually generated by nonlinear process on linear internal waves (IW). Near HengChun Ridge that links Taiwan and Luzon Islands, we found that there are linear internal waves following NLIW and they travel westward at different speed, about 1.5 m/s for IW and 2.9 m/s for NLIW. This phenomenon was observed on site with ship radar and echo sounders, and later verified with thermistor chain. West of Luzon Strait, the separation of NLIW are 5 km or more, while linear internal waves are lines of wave crests at nearly equal distance that is only a few hundred meters apart. The current hypothesis is that most of the energy of internal tide forms a beam that propagates upward from the eastern shoulder of ocean ridge and later interacts with sea surface and thermocline. The interaction with thermocline generates linear internal wave that propagate along the pycnocline at about 1.5 m/s. The interaction with sea surface scatters internal wave energy downward, ensonifies the water column and generates large nonlinear waves that propagate westward at 2.9 m/s as mode 1 in a waveguide.
Development and distribution of larval Dungeness crab, Cancer magister Dana, 1852 were investigated in southeastern Alaska from late May to mid-September in 2004. Larvae were collected during daylight hours at three inner and two outer Glacier Bay stations at the two different depths in the water column, above and below the thermocline. Larval density decreased dramatically for three larval stages, zoeae I(ZI), zoeae IV, and zoeae V(ZV), but relatively little for zoeae II and zoeae III. ZI predominated at all stations in late May and were collected until late July. Larval stages progressed seasonally from ZI to ZV and density decreased from ZI through ZV. The densities of each zoeal stage at the inner and outer bay stations and at the shallow and deep depths were similar. The density of each larval stage above(shallow) and below(deep) the thermocline and between inner and outer bay stations were not significantly different. The occurrence of larval Dungeness crab is dramatically later than in other parts of the species range, in that larvae appear in abundance beginning in late May. The pattern of spatial distribution of larval stages for the inland waters of Alaska was also markedly different than the patterns reported for Dungeness crab larvae from other parts of the species range, in that the early and intermediate stages occurred within inland waters; from British Columbia to California these larval stages increase in abundance with distance offshore.
A radiotracer investigation was carried out in a Thermal Stratification Test Facility (TSTF) with objectives of investigating the dispersion and diffusion of radionuclide and effectiveness of the thermocline to minimize the radionuclide content in the hot water layer. Technetium-99m (99mTc) as sodium pertechnetate was used as a radiotracer in the investigation. Qualitative analysis showed that a thermocline is formed within the TSTF and is effective in preventing the transport of radionuclide from bottom section to the top section of the facility. It was found that the radiotracer injected at the bottom of the pool took about 17.4 h to disperse from bottom to the top of the facility. The results of the investigation helped in understanding the effectiveness of hot water layer and thus to minimize the pool top radiation levels.
The wind stress distribution over the East Sea of Korea was obtained from the shipboard observations of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency along the serial observation lines. These monthly and annual mean wind stress distributions were put into the simplified interface model which describes the latitudinal variations of the upper-layer thickness as function of the curl of the wind stress. The observed variations of the surface, zonally averaged winds indeed caused the upper-layer flow convergent and divergent at the latitudes that produced a tone of thick upper-layer or a deep permanent thermocline and the shallower depth with divergence. Thus, the wind field contributes positively to maintain the almost time-independent distribution of the interface of 'saddle like' feature in north-south direction over the study area.
