The study is concerned with the two-dimensional thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis for radial forging as an incremental forging process. The deformation and temperature distribution of the workpiece during radial forging are studied. The analysis of deformation and the analysis of heat transfer are carried out for simple upsetting of cylinder by decoupling the above two analyses. A method of treatment for heat transfer through the contact region between the die and the workpiece is suggested, in which remeshing of the die elements is not necessary. Radial forging of a mild steel cylinder at the elevated temperature is subjected to the decoupled finite element analysis as well as to the experiment. The computed results in deformation, load and temperature distribution are found to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. As an example of viscoplastic decoupled analysis of hot radial forging, forging of a square section into a circular section is treated. The stresses, strains, strain rates and temperature distribution are computed by superposing material properties as the workpiece is rotated and forged incrementally. It was been thus shown that proposed method of analysis can be effectively applied to the hot radial forging processes.
Welding distortions of large steel structures had mainly been estimated with some simplified formula obtained by lots of experience and numerical analyses for small steel structures. However, the large structures would have different characteristics of distortion with welding because of their own stiffness coming from the size itself. Therefore, in order to find some measures for preventing welding distortion of large structure, it is requite in advance to precisely analysis thermal stress and distortion during welding of the structure. Numerical analysis for larger structure has been known to take large amount of calculation time and have a poor convergency problem during the thermo-elasto-plastic calculation. In this study, a hybrid method is proposed to analysis the thermal stress and distortion of a large steel plate with the finite element analysis by incorporating with temperature distribution of the plate calculated by an analytical solution. The proposed method revealed that the thermo-mechanical analysis for welding of the large structure could be performed with a good convergence and produced precise results with much reduced time consumption.

The study is concerned with the thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis of axisymmetric forward hot extrusion through square dies. The problem is treated as a nonsteady state problem because the distribution of temperature and material properties are continuously changing with the punch travel. In square die extrusion, difficulties arise from the severe distortion and die interference of elements at the aperture rim of the die even with a small punch travel. And finite element computation is impossible without intermittent remeshing. Accordingly, an automatic remeshing technique is proposed by employing specially designed mesh structure near the aperture rim. The analysis of temperature distribution includes heat conduction through material interfaces, heat convection and radiation to the atmosphere and is carried out by decoupling the heat analysis from the analysis of the deformation. The extrusion load and the distributions of strain rate and temperature are computed for the given cases rendering reasonable results. Computed grid distortions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. It has been thus shown that the proposed method of analysis can be effectively applied to the axisymmetric hot extrusion through square dies.

Creep behaviors of the solder balls in a flip chip package assembly during thermal cycling test is investigated.. A material models used in the finite element analysis are viscoplastic model introduced by Anand and creep model called partitioned model. Experiment of two temperature cycles using moir$\acute{e}$ interferometry is conducted to verify the reliability of material models for the analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior. Bending deformations of the assemblies and average strains of the solder balls due to temperature change and dwell time are investigated. The results show that time-dependent shear strain of solder by the partitioned model is in excellent agreement with those by moir$\acute{e}$ interferometry, while there is considerable difference between results by Anand model and experiment. In this paper, the partitioned model is employed for the time-dependent creep analysis of the FC-PBGA package. It is also shown that the thermo-mechanical stress becomes relaxed by creep behavior at high temperature during temperature cycles.

In this paper, a simple and efficient phenomenological macroscopic one-dimensional model is proposed which is able to simulate main features of shape memory alloys (SMAs) particularly ferro-elasticity effect. The constitutive model is developed within the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes to simulate the one-dimensional behavior of SMAs under uniaxial simple tension-compression as well as pure torsion+/- loadings. Various functions including linear, cosine and exponential functions are introduced in a unified framework for the martensite transformation kinetics and an analytical description of constitutive equations is presented. The presented model can be used to reproduce primary aspects of SMAs including transformation/orientation of martensite phase, shape memory effect, pseudo-elasticity and in particular ferro-elasticity. Experimental results available in the open literature for uniaxial tension, torsion and bending tests are simulated to validate the present SMA model in capturing the main mechanical characteristics. Due to simplicity and accuracy, it is expected the present SMA model will be instrumental toward an accurate analysis of SMA components in various engineering structures particularly when the ferro-elasticity is obvious.

In this paper, to examine the propagation of inclined surface crack due to frictional heating, analytic model is considered as the semi-infinite elastic body subjected to the thermo-mechanical loading of an asperity moving with a high speed. Considering the moving of frictional heat source and convection on a semi-infinite surface having inclined crack, theoretical analysis was carried out to estimate the propagation characteristics of thermo-mechanical crack. Numerical results showed that stress intensity factor $K_\prod/P_0\sqrt{c}$ is increasing with increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, decreasing crack length and the maximum value of it is positioned at the trailing edge. So it is shown that the propagation probability of surface crack is high at the trailing edge of contact area as increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, as decreasing crack length.

Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) can describe not only swelling owing to decrease in effective stress, but also wetting-induced swelling due to decrease in suction. And the BBM can also consider increase in cohesion and apparent preconsolidation stress with suction, and decrease in the apparent preconsolidation stress with temperature. Therefore, the BBM is widely used all over the world to predict and to analyze coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of bentonite which is considered as buffer materials at the engineered barrier system in the high-level radioactive waste disposal system. However, the BBM is not well known in Korea, so this paper introduce the BBM to Korean rock engineers and geotechnical engineers. In this study, Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model is introduced before all, because the BBM was first developed as an extension of the MCC model to unsaturated soil conditions. Then, the thermo-elasto-plastic version of the BBM is described in detail.

The objective of this study is to predict the structural characteristics of a heat exchanger mounted on an aircraft engine using finite element analysis. The plastic fracture and life of the heat exchanger were estimated by a thermo-mechanical analysis. Tensile tests were conducted under high temperature conditions (700, 800, 900, 1000 K) using five specimens to obtain the mechanical properties of the Inconel 625 tubes. To assess the structural characteristics of the heat exchanger, the full and partial models were applied under the operating conditions given by the thermo-mechanical and inertial load. As a result, the case, tubesheet, flange, and mounting components have a reasonable safety margin to the allowable stress assuming a fatigue strength of Inconel 625 of 10000 cycles under 1000 K.

A helicopter rotor brake system stops or reduces the speed of the rotor by transforming the kinetic energy into the heat energy. The frictionally generated heat has a considerable effect on the frictional property of material itself and causes the change of the friction coefficient which may affect the breaking time significantly. In this paper, to take into account the effect of change of friction coefficient according to temperature on braking time, thermo-mechanically coupled analysis is carried out by commercial software ABAQUS. Further, simple theoretical equation is derived considering thermo-mechanical behaviors. The predicted braking times both from theoretical and numerical methods are compared and validity of proposed theoretical equation is investigated.

Thermo-mechanical vibration characteristics of in homogeneousporous functionally graded (FG) micro/nanobeam subjected to various types of thermal loadings are investigated in the present paper based on modified couple stress theory with consideration of the exact position of neutral axis. The FG micro/nanobeam is modeled via a refined hyperbolic beam theory in which shear deformation effect is verified needless of shear correction factor. A modified power-law distribution which contains porosity volume fraction is used to describe the graded material properties of FG micro/nanobeam. Temperature field has uniform, linear and nonlinear distributions across the thickness. The governing equations and the related boundary conditions are derived by Extended Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying an analytical solution which satisfies various boundary conditions. A comparison study is performed to verify the present formulation with the known data in the literature and a good agreement is observed. The parametric study covered in this paper includes several parameters such as thermal loadings, porosity volume fraction, power-law exponents, slenderness ratio, scale parameter and various boundary conditions on natural frequencies of porous FG micro/nanobeams in detail.
