Lacquer sap extracted from lacquer trees exhibits good thermal stabilities and antimicrobial properties. To apply these superior properties to functional packaging, polyurushiol (YPUOH) powders were prepared and blended into LDPE (low density polyethylene) to prepare three different LDPE/YPUOH composite films via a twin screw extruder system. Their morphology, thermal and antimicrobial properties as well as barrier properties of the LDPE/YPUOH composite films were thoroughly investigated to find out applicablities of the films as functional packaging materials. Although the interfacial interaction between LDPE and YPUOH was relatively weak, LDPE/YPUOH composite films exhibited good dispersion of YPUOH in LDPE, resulting in the enhanced thermal stability with YPUOH loading. Due to the good antibacterial property of as-prepared YPUOH, LDPE/YUOH composite films also showed an excellent antibacterial activity (R) of 99.9% against E. coli. Furthermore, the moisture barrier property of LDPE/YPUOH composite films increased with increasing YPUOH contents. Incorporating the relatively low amount of YPUOH in LDPE resulted in the apparent enhancement in thermal stabilities, antibacterial and moisture barrier properties, which made them promising candidates as a functional filler for packaging materials.

Nacre is an organic-inorganic composite material; it is composed of $CaCO_3$ platelet and protein. The microstructure of nacre is a matrix that is similar to bricks and mortar. Technology inspired by nature is called biomimetic technology. In this study, to make high thermal conducting ceramic composite materials using biomimetic technology, a porous green body was prepared with BN platelets. PMMA was infiltrated into the porous green body to make a composite. The microstructure of the composite was observed with FESEM, and the thermal properties were measured. The thermal conductivity of the prepared organic-inorganic composite was 4.19 $W/m{\cdot}K$.

The methodology of micromechanical finite element method (MFEM) is proposed to calculate the micromechanical strains on fiber and matrix under mechanical and thermal loadings. For micromechanical analysis, composite structure is idealized the square and hexagonal unit cells. Boundary conditions are determined to calculate the effective material properties of composites and the strain magnification matrix. And they are verified by comparing with the results from multi cells, and the strain distributions of the unit cells are in accordance with those of the multi cells. Finally, the effective material properties of composite structure are obtained with respect to its fiber volume fraction and compared with results from rules-of-mixture.

The thermal stability of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) intercalated graphite oxide has been investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter. The poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) intercalated graphite oxide composite shows a prominent exothermic reaction near $207^{\circ}C$ and an endothermic reaction near $453^{\circ}C$. Graphite oxide is responsible for the exothermic reaction while the endothermic reaction is caused by the poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) used in the synthesis of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) intercalated graphite oxide. The onset temperature of the exothermic reaction of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) intercalated graphite oxide decreased by $92^{\circ}C$ in comparison with that of graphite oxide, indicating the addition of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) in the composite has diminished the thermal stability of graphite oxide.

To reduce residual pores of composites and obtain a dense matrix, SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVI) using SiC nanorods. SiC nanorods were uniformly grown in the thickness direction of the composite preform when the reaction pressure was maintained at 50 torr or 100 torr at 1,100℃. When SiC nanorods were grown, the densities of the composites were 2.57 ~ 2.65 g/㎤, higher than that of the composite density of 2.47 g/㎤ for non-growing of SiC nanorods under the same conditions; grown nanorods had uniform microstructure with reduced large pores between bundles. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal conductivity (room temperature) of the SiC nanorod grown composites were 412 ~ 432 MPa, 13.79 ~ 14.94 MPa·m1/2 and 11.51 ~11.89 W/m·K, which were increases of 30%, 25%, and 25% compared to the untreated composite, respectively.

In this study, alumina plates 9~25 μm in size were used as thermal fillers, and epoxy resin was used as a polymer matrix. Oriented alumina plate/epoxy composites were prepared using a rolling method. The effect of ordering alumina plates increased with alumina plate size. The thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the composites were investigated. The horizontal thermal conductivity of the oriented composite was significantly higher than the vertical thermal conductivity. The horizontal thermal conductivity of the 75 wt% alumina content was 8.78 W/mk, although the vertical thermal conductivity was 1.04 W/mk. Ordering of the alumina plate using a rolling method significantly improved the thermal conductivity in the horizontal direction. The flexural strengths of the ordered alumina/epoxy composites prepared at different curing temperatures were measured.

In general, to enhance physical properties of PET-layered silicate nanocomposites $(P_{et}LSNs)$, it has been well known that the organic modifiers should introduce into gallery regions. However, the organic modifiers in$(P_{et}LSNs)$ may result in thermal decomposition by melt processing at high temperature, and it necessarily lead to deteriorate various physical properties of final products. Therefore, in this study, $(P_{et}LSNs)$ excluding and including organic modifiers were prepared by solution method $(S-P_{et}LSNs_{eom} and S-P_{et}LSNs_{iom})$ and we (focused on the effects of the organic modifiers in $P_{et}$ LSNs with exfoliation structure on the crystallization behaviors, the optical transparency, the thermal stability and the mechanical property. The absence and existence of organic modifiers in $S-P_{et}LSNs_{eom} and S-P_{et}LSNs_{iom}$ were investigated by EA and TGA, and nano-structure of silicate layers in $S-P_{et}LSNs$ was evaluated by using WXRD, SAXS and TEM. $S-P_{et}LSNs_{eom} and S-P_{et}LSNs_{iom}$ were mixed with neat PET as masterbatches by melt method $(M-P_{et}LSNs_{eom} and M-P_{et}LSNs_{iom})$, and also neat PET was mixed with organically modified layered silicates (OLS) by conventional direct melt method $(D-P_{et}LSNs) at 270^{\circ}C$. As results, it was found that $M-P_{et}LSNs_{eom}, M-P_{et}LSNs_{iom}, and D-P_{et}LSN$ showed a exfoliated structure and exhibited faster crystallization rate, better thermal stability and mechanical property than those of neat PET due to the dispersed and detaminated silicate layers in PET matrix. Whereas, considering organic modifiers effect, $M-P_{et}LSNs_{eom} and D-P_{et}LSN$ exhibited slower crystallization rate, poorer optical, thermal and mechanical properties, in comparison to $M-P_{et}LSNs_{eom}> due to the thermal decomposition of organic modifier in $D-P_{et}LSNs$ during melt method.

Water vapor and thermal transmission properties of high emotional garments are important to evaluate wear comfort; in addition, the measuring methods of these properties are also critical for breathable and warm suit fabrics. In this study, the water vapor and thermal properties of composite yarn fabrics made of CoolMax, Tencel, and Bamboo fibers with filaments were measured and compared according to the measuring method. Water Vapor Transmittance (WVT) of the fabric woven by the sheath/core composite yarn in the warp direction was the highest due to the small staple fiber volume in the sheath/core yarn structure and high air voids in the sheath/core yarn fabrics. This property was also the highest in fabrics woven by bamboo staple yarns in the weft direction, and was the lowest on hi-multi filament fabrics. However, water vapor resistance ($R_{ef}$) of these fabrics by KSK ISO 11092 showed the opposite results to the water vapor transmittance method ($CaCl_2$ method); in addition, its correlation coefficient was low. The correlation coefficient between $R_{ef}$ and the drying rate was 0.719; therefore, the measurement mechanism of $R_{ef}$ is analogous to the drying property measurement. The thermal conductivity of the fabrics woven with compact staple yarn showed a high value; however, the hi-multi filament fabric showed low thermal conductivity. Therefore, fiber characteristics affect thermal properties more than yarn structure. The correlation between thermal property and moisture transport was also low. This study showed that: water vapor transmittance was active at the loose yarn structure, dry heat transport was vigorous at the compact yarn structure, and heat transport was affected more by fiber characteristics than yarn structure. In conclusion, sheath/core composite yarns were relevant to the high absorptive cool suit along with siro-fil and CoolMax/Bamboo staple yarns that were relevant to the heat diffusive cool suit.
For the sub-65 nm CMOS process, it is necessary to develop a new silicide material and an accompanying process that allows the silicide to maintain a low sheet resistance and to have an enhanced thermal stability, thus providing for a wider process window. In this study, we have evaluated the property and unit process compatibility of newly proposed composite silicides. We fabricated composite silicide layers on single crystal silicon from $10nm-Ni_{1-x}Co_x/single-crystalline-Si(100),\;10nm-Ni_{1-x}Co_x/poly-crystalline-\;Si(100)$ wafers (x=0.2, 0.5, and 0.8) with the purpose of mimicking the silicides on source and drain actives and gates. Both the film structures were prepared by thermal evaporation and silicidized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. The sheet resistance, cross-sectional microstructure, surface composition, were investigated using a four-point probe, a field emission scanning probe microscope, a field ion beam, an X-ray diffractometer, and an Auger electron depth profi1ing spectroscopy, respectively. Finally, our newly proposed composite silicides had a stable resistance up to $1100^{\circ}C$ and maintained it below $20{\Omega}/Sg$., while the conventional NiSi was limited to $700^{\circ}C$. All our results imply that the composite silicide made from NiCo alloy films may be a possible candidate for 65 nm-CMOS devices.

Composite materials, when damaged under thermal or mechanical loadings, show property changes. Among many mechanical properties of composite materials. the stiffness tend to be reduced due to micro-cracking, debonding, or delamination caused by external loadings. This research presents results regarding the detecting technique of internal damages within composite that experienced low-velocity impacts. Post-damage evaluations were made experimentally using flexural and compression loadings. Preliminary finite element analysis was made and compared with analytical solutions. The experimental results to determine the degree of damage will be compared with finite element results.
