The characteristics of the typhoon's extratropical transition (ET) over the western North Pacific area were investigated using the cyclone phase space (CPS) diagram method suggested by Hart (2003). The data used in this study were the global data assimilation prediction system (GDAPS) and NCEP data set. The number of typhoons selected were 75 cases during 2002 to 2007, and the three parameters were analyzed : the motion relative thickness asymmetry of the storm (B), the upper thermal wind shear and the lower thermal wind shear. Comparing the best-track data provided by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center /Tokyo, the time of the ET based on CPS was 2~6 hours earlier than the best-track data. And it was shown that the 400- km and 30 kt wind radius of storm for the CPS method were better agreement than the previous suggested radius 500- km.
The effective thermal conductivity of porous materials is usually determined by porosity, water content, and the conductivity of the matrix. In addition, it is also affected by the internal structure of the materials such as the size, arrangement, and connectivity of the matrix-forming grains. Based on the structural models for multi-phase materials, thermal conductivities of soils and sands measured with varying the water content were analyzed. Thermal conductivities of dry samples were likely to fall in the region between the Maxwell-Eucken model with air as the continuous phase and the matrix as the dispersed phase ($ME_{air}$) and the co-continuous (CC) model. However, water-saturated samples moved down to the region between the $ME_{wat}$ model and the series model. The predictive inconsistency of the structural models for dry and water-saturated samples may be caused by the increase of porosity for water-saturated samples, which leads to decrease of connectivity among the grains of matrix. In cases of variably saturated samples with a uniform grain size, the thermal conductivity showed progressive changes of the structural models from the $ME_{air}$ model to the $ME_{wat}$ model depending on the water content. Especially, an abrupt increase found in 0-20% of the water content, showing transition from the $ME_{air}$ model to the CC model, can be attributed to change of water from the dispersed to continuous phase. On the contrary, the undisturbed soil samples with various sizes of grains showed a gradual increase of conductivity during the transition from the $ME_{air}$ model to the CC model.

Monoclinic $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles codoped with 1.5 at. % W and 2.9 at. % Mg were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment and post-thermal transformation method of $V_2O_5-H_2C_2O_4-H_2O$ with $Na_2WO_4$ and $Mg(NO_3)_2$. The composite thin film of the W/Mg-codoped $VO_2(M)$ with a commercial acrylic block copolymer was also prepared on PET substrate by wet-coating method. The reversible phase transition characteristics of the codoped $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles and the composite film were investigated from DSC, resistivity and Vis-NIR transmittance measurements compared with the undoped and Wdoped $VO_2(M)$ samples. Mg-codoping into W-doped $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the transition characteristics by increasing the sharpness of transition while the transition temperature ($T_c$) lowered by W-doping was maintained. The codoped composite film showed the prominently enhanced NIR switching efficiency compared to only W-doped $VO_2(M)$ film with a lowered $T_c$.
In this paper, we analyzed the reset current variation of PRAM device with top electrode using the 3-D finite element analysis tool. As thickness of phase change material thin film decreased, reset current caused by phase transition highly increased. Joule's heat which was generated at the contact surface of phase change material and bottom electrode of PRAM was given off through top electrode to which was transferred phase change material. As thermal conductivity of top electrode decreased, heating temperate was increased.
Thermal aging test is performed to qualify the life time of equipment in thermally aged condition. Due to long life time more than 10 years like as in power plant, the equipment is subjected to the accelerated thermal aging condition which is able to shorten the long aging test period by increasing aging temperature. Normally, conservatism of thermal aging test causes to impose unbalanced and excessive thermal load on components of the equipment, and deformation and damage problems of the components. Additionally, temperature rise of each component through heat generation of the electric equipment leads to long-term problem of the test period. Multi-phase accelerating aging test is to perform thermal aging test in multiple aging conditions after dividing into groups with various components of equipment. The groups might be classified considering various factors such as activation energy, temperature rise, glass transition temperature and melting temperature. In this study, we verify that the multi-phase accelerating aging test method can reduce and equalize the thermal over load of the components and shorten aging test time.
Phase transitions of the $Sm_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$ single crystal were studied through thermal analysis, x-ray methods and SEM/EDS. $Sm_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$ undergoes the ferroelastic and ferroelectric phase transition at $198^{\circ}C$. With increasing temperature, the second phase transition occurs at $928^{\circ}C$. From TG analysis, the mass loss of $Sm_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$ exhibits an anomalous behavior at about $650^{\circ}C$ and the curves increased monotonically to $1132^{\circ}C$. SEM and EDS show that the escape of ${MoO_{4}^{2-}$ tetrahedra from the lattice of $Sm_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$ increase above $928^{\circ}C$, so $Sm_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$ has a very rough surface and internal cracks.
In this work, a possible mechanism for grain evolution in Al-Mg alloy films during thermal annealing is suggested on the basis of the phase transition and the related residual stress. Al-Mg alloy films with compositions of 14.0 and 18.0 wt% Mg content were deposited on cold-rolled steel substrates by the direct current co-sputtering method using Al and Mg targets. After the deposition, the samples were thermally annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The featureless, dense cross-sectional microstructure of the as-deposited films turned into a grainy microstructure after the thermal annealing. According to the residual stress evaluated by using the $XRD-sin2{\psi}$ technique and the phase analysis by XRD, it is likely that grains were created in order to relieve the additional accumulation of residual stress originating from the phase transition from face-centered cubic Al (${\alpha}$) to Al3Mg2 (${\beta}$) and Mg (${\delta}$) phases, suggesting interplay between the microstructure and residual stress.

The development of thermoelectric (TE) materials to replace Bi2Te3 alloys is emerging as a hot issue with the potential for wider practical applications. In particular, layered Zintl-phase materials, which can appropriately control carrier and phonon transport behaviors, are being considered as promising candidates. However, limited data have been reported on the thermoelectric properties of metal-Sb materials that can be transformed into layered materials through the insertion of cations. In this study, we synthesized FeSb and MnSb, which are used as base materials for advanced thermoelectric materials. They were confirmed as single-phase materials by analyzing X-ray diffraction patterns. Based on electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of both materials characterized as a function of temperature, the zT values of MnSb and FeSb were calculated to be 0.00119 and 0.00026, respectively. These properties provide a fundamental data for developing layered Zintl-phase materials with alkali/alkaline earth metal insertions.
In this study, we suggest the new emitter formation applied solid phase epitaxy (SPE) growth process using rapid thermal process (RTP). Preferentially, we describe the SPE growth of intrinsic a-Si thin film through RTP heat treatment by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD). Phase transition of intrinsic a-Si thin films were taken place under $600^{\circ}C$ for 5 min annealing condition measured by spectroscopic ellipsometer (SE) applied to effective medium approximation (EMA). We confirmed the SPE growth using high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) analysis. Similarly, phase transition of P doped a-Si thin films were arisen $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 min, however, crystallinity is lower than intrinsic a-Si thin films. It is referable to the interference of the dopant. Based on this, we fabricated 16.7% solar cell to apply emitter layer formed SPE growth of P doped a-Si thin films using RTP. We considered that is a relative short process time compare to make the phosphorus emitter such as diffusion using furnace. Also, it is causing process simplification that can be omitted phosphorus silicate glass (PSG) removal and edge isolation process.

We have studied the Polymer Stabilized Continuous Director Rotation (PSCDR) mode to solve the thermal shock problem which is core and main problem in CDR mode. The cell filled 95wt. % R2301 FLC and 5wt. % UCL-001 polymer is applied a low DC voltage only near the phase transition temperature from cholesteric to chiral smectic C phase transition to get defect-free alignment. In the previous work, we also confirmed layer deformation induced by an applied DC field only near the phase transition temperature from Ch to $SmC^{\ast}$. Results of layer structure, and characteristics of electro-optical properties between CDR and PSCDR mode will be discussed in this paper. We are also in progress to finalize the layer structures compared between CDR and PSCDR mode by x-ray measurements.
