Prediction of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridge (IAB) load effect requires understanding of the inherent uncertainties as it relates to thermal loading, time-dependent effects, bridge material properties and soil properties. In addition, complex inelastic and hysteretic behavior must be considered over an extended, 75-year bridge life. The present study establishes IAB displacement and internal force statistics based on available material property and soil property statistical models and Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical models within the simulation were developed to evaluate the 75-year bridge displacements and internal forces based on 2D numerical models that were calibrated against four field monitored IABs. The considered input uncertainties include both resistance and load variables. Material variables are: (1) concrete elastic modulus; (2) backfill stiffness; and (3) lateral pile soil stiffness. Thermal, time dependent, and soil loading variables are: (1) superstructure temperature fluctuation; (2) superstructure concrete thermal expansion coefficient; (3) superstructure temperature gradient; (4) concrete creep and shrinkage; (5) bridge construction timeline; and (6) backfill pressure on backwall and abutment. IAB displacement and internal force statistics were established for: (1) bridge axial force; (2) bridge bending moment; (3) pile lateral force; (4) pile moment; (5) pile head/abutment displacement; (6) compressive stress at the top fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span; and (7) tensile stress at the bottom fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span. These established IAB displacement and internal force statistics provide a basis for future reliability-based design criteria development.

In this paper, we prepared a metal alloy resistor with stable thermal electro motive force (thermal EMF) as well as a low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) by adjusting the manganese proportion from 3 to 12 wt% in the Cu-Mn-Ni alloy. Composition of the fabricated metal alloy was investigated using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The TCR of each sample was measured as 44.56, 40.54, 35.60, and 31.56 ppm for Cu-3Mn-2Ni, Cu-5Mn-2Ni, Cu-10Mn-2Ni, and Cu-12Mn-2Ni, respectively. All the resistor samples were available for the F grade (${\pm}1%$ of the allowable error of resistance) high-precision resistor. All the samples satisfied the baseline of high thermal EMF (under 3 mV at $60^{\circ}C$); however, Cu-3Mn-2Ni and Cu-5Mn-2Ni satisfied the baseline of low thermal EMF (under 0.3 mV at $25^{\circ}C$). We were thus able to design and fabricate the metal alloy resistor of Cu-3Mn-2Ni and Cu-5Mn-2Ni to have low TCR and stable thermal EMF at the same time.
This study discussed the effect on rail's axial force due to thermal and seismic loads according to supporting conditions of railway bridges; the considered supporting conditions are 1)simply supported, 2)roller at both ends, and 3)roller with horizontal spring at both ends. Closed form solutions are used to calculate the axial farces on rails. The roller at both ends of a bridge span decreases the compressive axial force on rail due to thermal load compared with the simply supported condition. However, the lateral springs at roller are not helpful to decrease the rail's compressive axial force.
The use of magnetoresistive (MR) head requires much tighter control of particle contamination in a drive since loose particles on the disk surface will generate thermal asperities (TA). In this study, a spinoff test was performed to investigate the adhesion and removal capability of a particle to disk surface. Numerical simulation was also performed to investigate dominant factor of particle detachment and to support experimental results. It was shown that particles are detached from the disk surface by the moment derived from the centrifugal force and the drag force and that the centrifugal force and capillary force are the dominant force, which determines spin-off of a particle on the disk surface. Removal of particles smaller than several micrometers, which are the main source of TA generation, is extremely difficult since the adhesion forces exceed the centrifugal force. Lubricant types and manufacturing process also influence the particle removal. Lower bonding ratio and lower viscosity of the lubricant will help to increase the removal rate of the particles from the disk surface.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used as a tool, not only for imaging surfaces, but also for measuring surface forces and mechanical properties at the nano-scale. Force calibration is crucial for quantitatively measuring the forces that act between the AFM probe of a force sensing cantilever and a sample. In this work, the lateral force calibrations of a V-shaped cantilever were performed using the finite element method, multiple pivot loading, and thermal noise methods. As a result, it was shown that the multiple pivot loading method was appropriate for the lateral force calibration of a V-shaped cantilever. Further, through crosschecking of the abovementioned methods, it was concluded that the thermal noise method could be used for determining the lateral spring constants as long as the lateral deflection sensitivity was accurately determined. To obtain the lateral deflection sensitivity from the sticking portion of the friction loop, the contact stiffness should be taken into account.
This study presents a molecular simulation of adhesion control between carbon nanotube (CNT) and Ag thin film deposited on silicon substrate. Rough and flat Ag thin film models were prepared to investigate the effect of surface roughness on adhesion force. Heat treatment was applied to the models to modify the adhesion characteristics of the Ag/CNT interface based on thermal wetting. Simulation results showed that the heat treatment altered the Ag thin film morphology by thermal wetting, causing an increase in contact area of Ag/CNT interface and the adhesion force for both the flat and rough models changed. Despite the increase in contact area, the adhesion force of flat Ag/CNT interface decreased after the heat treatment because of plastic deformation of the Ag thin film. The result suggests that internal stress of the CNT induced by the substrate deformation contributes in reduction of adhesion. Contrarily, heat treatment to the rough model increases adhesion force because of the expanded contact area. The contact area is speculated to be more influential to the adhesion force rather than the internal stress of the CNT on the rough Ag thin film, because the CNT on the rough model contains internal stress regardless of the heat treatment. Therefore, as demonstrated by simulation results, the heat treatment can prevent delamination or wear of CNT coating on a rough metallic substrate by thermal wetting phenomena.

The effect of interface bonding strength on the recovery force of SMA wire reinforced polymer matrix composites was investigated by pullout test. Firstly, the recovery forces and transformation temperatures of various prestrained SMA wires were measured and 5% prestrained SMA wires were prepared for the reinforcements of composites. EPDM incorporated with 20vol% silicon carbide particles(SiCp) of 6, 12, $60{mutextrm{m}}$ size were used as matrix. Pullout test results showed that the interface bonding strength increased when the SiCp size decreased due to the increase of elastic modulus of matrix. Cyclic test of composites was performed through control of DC current at the constant displacement mode. The abrupt decrease of recovery force during cycle test at high current was occurred by thermal degradation of matrix. This was in good agreement with temperature related in the thermal degradation of matrix. The hysteresis of recovery force with respect to the temperature was compared between wire and composite and the hysterisis of composites was smaller than the wire due to less thermal conduction.
The improvement of thermal-hydraulic analysis techniques is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. The one-dimensional two-fluid model has been adopted in state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic system codes. Current constitutive equations used in the system codes reach a mature level. Some exceptions are the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal two-phase flow. This study is focused on deriving the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and modeling the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal bubbly flow. The one-dimensional momentum equation in the two-fluid model is derived from the local momentum equation. The derived one-dimensional momentum equation demonstrates that total wall friction should be apportioned to gas and liquid phases based on the phasic volume fraction, which is the same as that used in the SPACE code. The constitutive equations for the interfacial drag force are also identified. Based on the assessments, the Rassame-Hibiki correlation, Hibiki-Ishii correlation, Ishii-Zuber correlation, and Rassame-Hibiki correlation are recommended for computing the distribution parameter, interfacial area concentration, drag coefficient, and relative velocity covariance of a horizontal bubbly flow, respectively.

This paper proposes a thermal peripheral blood flowmeter integrated with a force sensor that is capable of contact force compensation. We fabricate this blood flowmeter using a nickel RTD (resistance temperature detector) and piezoresistive force sensor by using microfabrication technology. In an experiment, we obtained a decreasing trend for the blood flow under an increasing contact force with a linear tendency of 31.7%/N. We then performed a compensation process based on this obtained trend. As a result, the maximum variance in the blood flow at 1-3N was 9.8%. Thus we achieved consistent blood flow measurement independent of the contact force. In this work, we verified that the thermal blood flowmeter integrated with a force sensor has the ability to accurately measure the blood flow independent of the contact force.

When emergency core cooling system (ECCS) is operated during loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), pressurized thermal shock (PTS) phenomenon can occur as cooling water is injected into a cold leg, mixed with hot primary coolant, and then entrained into a reactor vessel. Insufficient flow mixing may cause temperature stratification and steam condensation. In addition, flow vibration may cause thermal stresses in surrounding structures. This will reduce the life of the reactor vessel. Due to the importance of PTS phenomenon, in this study, calculation was performed for Test 1 among six types of OECD/NEA ROSA tests with ANSYS CFX R.17. Predicted results were then compared to measured data. Additionally, because temperature difference between the hot coolant at the inlet of the cold leg and the cold cooling water at the inlet of the ECCS injection line is 200 K or more, buoyancy force due to density difference might have significant effect on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of flow. Therefore, in this study, the necessity to include buoyancy force term in governing equations for accurate prediction of single phase thermal stratification in both cold legs and downcomer by ECCS injection was numerically studied.
