  • For the successful design of nuclear reactor, it is very important to investigate thermal-hydraulic characteristics of fuel rod bundle. Fluid flow and heat transfer in the non-circular cross-section of nuclear fuel rod bundle are different from those found in common circular tube. And complex three dimensional flow including secondary and vortex flow, is formed around the bundles. The purpose of this research is to examine how geometries and flow conditions affect heat transfer in fuel rod bundle. Design data for nuclear fuel rod bundle and structure are surveyed, and $3{\times}3$ sub-channel model is adopted in this study. Computational results are compared with the heat transfer data measured by naphthalene sublimation method, and numerical analysis and evaluation are performed at various design conditions and flow conditions.

  • Thermal mass flow meters (TMFMs) are most widely used for measuring mass flow rates in the semiconductor industry. A TMFM should have a short response time in order to measure the time-varying flow rate rapidly and accurately. Therefore it is important to study transient heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube of a TMFM that is the most critical part in the TMFM. In the present work, a simple numerical model for transient heat transfer phenomena of the sensor tube of a TMFM is presented. Numerical solutions for the tube and fluid temperatures in a transient state are obtained using the proposed model and compared with experimental results to validate the proposed model. Based on numerical solutions, heat transfer mechanism in a transient state in the sensor tube is explained. Finally, a correlation for predicting the response time of a sensor tube is presented. The correlation is verified by experimental results.

  • Because of design and manufacturing costs, it is important to predict an expected life of bellows with component stresses of bellows as its design factors and material characteristics. In this study, numerical analyses are carried out to elucidate the thermal and flow characteristics of the bellows-seal gate and globe valves for high temperature (max. $600^{\circ}C$) and for high pressure (max. $104 kgf/cm^2$) conditions. Using commercial codes, FLUENT, which uses FVM and SIMPLE algorithm, and ANSYS, which uses FEM, the pressure and temperature fields are graphically depicted. In addition, when bellows have an axial displacement, thermal stress affecting bellows life is studied. The pressure and temperature values obtained from the flow analyses are adopted as the boundary conditions for thermal stress analyses. As the result of this study, we got the reasonable coefficients for valve and thermal stress for bellows, compared with existing coefficients and calculated values.

  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are attracting wide attention due to their outstanding performance, extensive studies have been carried out for lead-based fast reactors (LFRs) that cooled with Lead or Lead-bismuth (LBE), and small modular natural circulation LFR is one of the promising candidates for SMRs and LFRs development. One of the challenges for the design small modular natural circulation LFR is to master the natural circulation thermal-hydraulic performance in the reactor primary circuit, while the natural circulation characteristics is a coupled thermal-hydraulic problem of the core thermal power, the primary loop layout and the operating state of secondary cooling system etc. Thus, accurate predicting the natural circulation LFRs thermal-hydraulic features are highly required for conducting reactor operating condition evaluate and Thermal hydraulic design optimization. In this study, a thermal-hydraulic analysis code is developed for small modular natural circulation LFRs, which is based on several mathematical models for natural circulation originally. A small modular natural circulation LBE cooled fast reactor named URANUS developed by Korea is chosen to assess the code's capability. Comparisons are performed to demonstrate the accuracy of the code by the calculation results of MARS, and the key thermal-hydraulic parameters agree fairly well with the MARS ones. As a typical application case, steady-state analyses were conducted to have an assessment of thermal-hydraulic behavior under nominal condition, and several parameters affecting natural circulation were evaluated. What's more, two characteristics parameters that used to analyze natural circulation LFRs natural circulation capacity were established. The analyses show that the core thermal power, thermal center difference and flow resistance is the main factors affecting the reactor natural circulation. Improving the core thermal power, increasing the thermal center difference and decreasing the flow resistance can significantly increase the reactor mass flow rate. Characteristics parameters can be used to quickly evaluate the natural circulation capacity of natural circulation LFR under normal operating conditions.

  • This study focus on verification of the thermal efficiency of volumetric receiver with $5kW_{th}$ Dish-type solar thermal system. Spiral flow path shaped on receiver and working fluid(steam) flow along the this flow path. Porous material for radiation-thermal conversion used in former researches are substituted with the stainless steel wall installed along the spiral shaped flow path. Numerical analysis for the flow path and temperature distributions are carried out. Numerical results are compared with experimental data. Using the numerical model, the heat transfer characteristics of spiral type receiver for dish-type solar thermal systems are known and the thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

  • This paper describes thermal flow characteristics in various pipelines: straight pipeline and curved pipeline. In the permafrost area, pipelines are exposed to an extremely low temperature ($-40^{\circ}C$). In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid. In this paper, multi-phase and multi-species analysis was introduced to analyze the flow characteristics of permafrost pipelines on the vertical support members above ground.

  • Gas Chromatography (GC) is a wisely technique used for the separation and analysis of liquid and gas sample. Separation of the sample vapors is achieved via their differential migration through a capillary column with an insert carrier gas. The identity and quantity of each vapor in the mixer can be determined from its retention time in the column and a particular property of the gas, such as thermal conductivity, which can be related to the concentration of sample vapor in the carrier gas. Therefore, the flow characteristics in the spiral gas chromatographic column are numerically investigated in this study. Especially, different pressure drop between the front and the rear of GC column with various flow rates is estimated the governing equations are derived from making using of three-dimensional Naver-Stokes equation with incompressible and laminar model due to the nature of low Reynolds number flow. Using a commercial code, FLUENT, the pressure and flow fields in GC column are calculated with various flow rates. The characteristics of thermal cycling which is one of the most important factors affecting the column efficiency and analysis time is also estimated. Furthermore, numerical analyses are also carried out by using commercial code, ANSYS, with various values of power, which is applied to the heating element located at lower GC column.

  • This study presents numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for supersonic unsteady flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle with heat addition. The TVD scheme in generalized coordinates is employed in order to calculate the moving shock waves caused by thermal choking. We discuss on transient characteristics, start and unstart phenomena, fluctuations of specific thrust caused by thermal choking and viscous effects. We prove that the control of separation of boundary layer is the most important key problem to prevent the thermal choking.

  • For the heat and fluid flow analyses of a parallel flow heat exchanger, an improved model considering the effect of flat tube with micro-channels is proposed. The effect of flow distribution on the thermal performance of a heat exchanger is numerically investigated. The flow distribution is examined by varying geometrical parameters, i.e., the position of the separators and the inlet/outlet, and the aspect ratio of micro-channels of the heat exchanger. The flow nonuniformities along the paths of the heat exchanger are proposed and observed to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The optimization using ALM method has been accomplished by minimizing the flow nonuniformity. It is found that the heat transfer rate of the optimized model is increased by 6.0% of that of the reference heat exchanger model, and the pressure drop by 0.4%
