  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has a low thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent mechanical properties; thus, it is used as a thermal barrier coating material for gas turbines. However, during long-time exposure of YSZ to temperatures of 1200℃ or higher, a phase transformation accompanied by a volume change occurs, causing the YSZ coating layer to peel off. To solve this problem, YSZ has been doped with trivalent and tetravalent oxides to obtain coating materials with low thermal conductivity and suppressed phase transformation of zirconia. In this study, YSZ is doped with trivalent oxides, Nd2O3, Yb2O3, Al2O3, and tetravalent oxide, TiO2, and the thermal conductivity of the obtained materials is analyzed according to the composition; furthermore, the relative density change, microstructure change, and m-phase formation behavior are analyzed during long-time heat treatment at high temperatures.

  • This study was performed to control the thermal crack of the mat footing slab in the multi-purposed buildings. In this study, we executed the mixing design of concrete to satisfy the workability and the quality according to the site conditions. And, we evaluated quantitatively about the possibility of thermal crack by using hydration heat analysis system. Finally, we proposed the optimal mixing conditions, curing methods and curing period which all factors are considered. As a result, the optimal mixing conditions were : W/B 41%, unit binder 375kgf/$\textrm{m}^3$, FA replacement ratio 20%. Lowest thermal stress was 22.0kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and at that time thermal crack index was over 1.5, when the coefficient of thermal conductivity was lowest among the curing conditions. And, the total curing time was estimated at 6.7 days according to curing steps.

  • Thermal buckling of functionally graded sandwich cylindrical shells is presented in this study. Material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of FGM layers are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a sigmoid function and simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Equilibrium and stability equations of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells with simply supported boundary conditions are derived according to the Donnell theory. The influences of cylindrical shell geometry and the gradient index on the critical buckling temperature of several kinds of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells are investigated. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and nonlinear distribution across the thickness direction. An exact simple form of nonlinear temperature rise through its thickness taking into account the thermal conductivity and the inhomogeneity parameter is presented.

  • Parameter analysis of mass concrete structures of two types subjected to heat of hydration and surface heat transfer is presented. Thermal stress analysis is conducted through the 3D FEM program. Thermal and mechanical properties of concrete, for example, conductivity, heat capacity, density, thermal expansion coefficient are varied from 80% to 120% of a reference value, and the change of thermal stress against the parameter is achieved respectively. As a result of the analysis, the parameter affecting thermal stress most significantly is an adiabatic temperature rise in the case of wall-type structure, and an initial temperature of concrete in the case of slab-type structure, respectively.

  • In this research, a semi-analytical solution is presented for computing mechanical displacements and thermal stresses in rotating thick cylindrical pressure vessels made of functionally graded material (FGM). The modulus of elasticity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and density of the cylinder are assumed to change along the axial direction as a power-law function. It is also assumed that Poisson's ratio and thermal conductivity are constant. This cylinder was subjected to non-uniform internal pressure and thermal loading. Thermal loading varies in two directions. The governing equations are derived by the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Using the multilayer method, a functionally graded (FG) cylinder with variable thickness is divided into n homogenous disks, and n sets of differential equations are obtained. Applying the boundary conditions and continuity conditions between the layers, the solution of this set of equations is obtained. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, in the literature, there is no study carried out bi-directional thermoelastic analysis of clamped-clamped rotating FGM thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels under variable pressure in the longitudinal direction.

  • Magnesium-antimonide is a well-known zintl phase thermoelectric material with low band gap energy, earth-abundance and characteristic electron-crystal phonon-glass properties. The nominal composition Mg3.8-xZnxSb2 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.02) was synthesized by controlled melting and subsequent vacuum hot pressing method. To investigate phase development and surface morphology during the process, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out. It should be noted that an additional 16 at. % Mg must be added to the system to compensate for Mg loss during the melting process. This study evaluated the thermoelectric properties of the material in terms of Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity from the low to high temperature regime. The results demonstrated that substituting Zn at Mg sites increased electrical conductivity without significantly affecting the Seebeck coefficient. The maximal dimensionless figure of merit achieved was 0.30 for x = 0.01 at 855 K which is 30% greater than the intrinsic value. Electronic flow properties were also evaluated and discussed to explain the carrier transport mechanism involved in the thermoelectric properties of this alloy system.

  • In this paper, the applicability of cement grout has been studied as an alternative to bentontite grout to backfill ground heat exchangers. To provide an optimal mixture design, the groutabilty and thermal conductivity of cement grouts with various mixture ratios were experimentally evaluated and compared. The unconfined compression strength of cement grout specimen was measured, which are exposed to cyclic temperature variation ranging from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-5^{\circ}C$. In addition, the integrity of the interface between circulating HDPE pipes and cement grout by performing equivalent hydraulic conductivity tests, in which a pipe locates at the center of the specimen.

  • Undoped $CoSb_3$ powders were synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental powders using a nominal stoichiometric composition. Nano-structured, single-phase skutterudite $CoSb_3$ was successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing (VHP) using MA powders without subsequent annealing. Phase transformations during synthesis were investigated using XRD, and microstructure was observed using SEM and TEM. Thermoelectric properties in terms of Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and figure of merit(ZT) were systematically measured and compared with the results of analogous studies. Lattice thermal conductivity was reduced owing to increasing phone scattering in nano-structured MA $CoSb_3$, leading to enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit. MA associated with VHP technique offers an alternative potential processing route for the process of skutterudite.

  • In the present work, the deformation and stresses induced in a functionally graded disk have been reported for different loading conditions. The governing differential equation is solved using the classical method namely Navier's method by considering thermal and mechanical boundary conditions at the surface of the disk. To simplify solving the second-order differential equation, a plane stress condition was assumed. Following validation using a one-dimensional steady-state heat condition problem, temperature variations were computed for constant heat generation and varying conductivity. The research aims to investigate both the individual and combined effects of rotation, gravity, and temperature with constant heat generation on a hollow disk operating under complex loading conditions. The results demonstrated a high degree of accuracy when compared with those in existing literature. Material properties, such as Young's modulus, density, conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficient, were modeled using a power law variation along the disk's radius by considering aluminum as a base material. The proposed analytical method is straightforward, providing valuable insights into the behavior of disks under various loading conditions. This method is particularly useful for researchers and industries in selecting appropriate loading conditions and grading parameters for engineering applications, including aerospace components, energy systems, and rotary machinery parts.
