  • This paper introduces a novel scheme for determining the thermal diffusivity of solids using the photothermal mirage technique. The suggested scheme extends the thermal-wave coupling method, employing the solution to the heat conduction equation in close proximity to the pump beam. Therefore, determination of thermal diffusivity is possible by detecting the mirage signal with small separation between the probe and pump beams, with enhanced intensity of the mirage signal. Though the method requires information about the probe-beam height, the absolute transverse position of the probe beam need not be known as it is automatically evaluated by the iterative-computation procedure. The thermal diffusivity of Ni is measured by the proposed scheme and the result demonstrates good agreement with the literature value to within 5 %.

  • The mirage technique is proved to be powerful in measuring the thermal diffusivity of materials. In particular, its contactless nature makes it suitable for delicate samples and microscale structures. In this study, thermal-wave-coupling method is developed in a general form for both thermally thin and thick samples. In the suggested measuring scheme, the probe beam can be positioned close to the pump beam and the absolute position need not be measured. Therefore the new scheme provides a relatively simple yet effective way to determine the thermal diffusivity of thermally thick samples. Thermal diffusivities of bulk samples like Ni and Al were measured and the characteristics of mirage signal for a thin film were observed by using the mirage experimental setup. The apparent thermal diffusivity was measured by varying such parameters as probe beam height, size of pump beam, power of pump beam, and surface condition of sample. From the practical standpoint, it is shown that the size of the pump beam is the most important factor for accurate thermaldiffusivity measurement. Experiments using thin-film samples show that the thermal diffusivity of a substrate covered with thin film can be measured by photothermal mirage signals.

  • In the present study, nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) is developed for wave propagation of functionally graded (FG) nanoscale plate in the thermal environment by considering the porosity effect. $Si_3N_4$ as ceramic phase and SUS304 as metal phase are regarded to be constitutive material of FG nanoplate. The porosity effect is taken into account on the basis of the newly extended method which considers coupling influence between Young's modulus and mass density. The motion relation is derived by applying Hamilton's principle. NSGT is implemented in order to account for small size effect. Wave frequency and phase velocity are obtained by solving the problem via an analytical method. The effects of different parameters such as porosity coefficient, gradient index, wave number, scale factor and temperature change on phase velocity and wave frequency of FG porous nanoplate have been examined and been presented in a group of illustrations.

  • To investigate the effects of ocean conditions on the thermal stress and deformation caused by thermal stratification of a pressurizer surge line in a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the finite element simulation platform ANSYS Workbench is utilized to conduct the fluid-solid-thermal coupling transient analysis of the surge line under normal "wave-out" condition (no motion) and under ocean conditions (rolling and pitching), generating the transient response characteristics of temperature distribution, thermal stress and thermal deformation inside the surge line. By comparing the calculated results for the three motion conditions, it is found that ocean conditions can significantly improve the thermal stratification phenomenon within the surge line, but may also result in periodic oscillations in the temperature, thermal stress, and thermal deformation of the surge line. Parts of the surge line that are more susceptible to thermal fatigue damage or failure are determined. According to calculation results, the improvements are recommended for pipeline structure to reduce the effects of thermal oscillation caused by ocean conditions. The analysis method used in this study is beneficial for designing and optimizing the pipeline structure of a floating nuclear power plant, as well as for increasing its safety.

  • Zirconium carbide was prepared from the mixture of metal zirconium and carbon powders in argon atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) in order to obtain the best carbon source and dilution contents. The most exellent result was obtained in the case that active carbon was added as a starting material, 20~30 wt% dilution content. From thermal profile analysis an apparent activation energy of 118 KJ/mol was calculated. The maximum heating rate achieved during 15 wt% ZrC reaction by product dilution method was approximately 1.54$\times$105 K/s. Coupling this value with the measured wave velocity of 1.026cm/s yielded a maximum thermal gradient fo $1.5\times$105 K/cm. Using the definition of t* and the measured wave velocity, the effective thermal diffusivity, $\alpha$, was calculated to be 0.62$\times$102 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s.

  • An analysis of the use of temperature profiles in the determination of the kinetic parameters of combustion synthesis of Ti5Si3 were investigated. From profile analysis, an apparent activation energy of 12KJ/mol was calculated. The Maximum heating rate achieved during 10wt% Ti5Si3 reaction by the product dilution method was approximately $1.5\times$104 K/s. Coupling this value with the measured wave velocity of 7.02 cm/s yields a maximum thermal gradient of 2.14$\times$103 K/cm. The value of tr (=t*) was calculated to be 1.2$\times$10-1 s and the value of td (=tx) was calculated to be 32.89 s. Using the definition of t* and the measured wave velocity, the effective thermal diffusivity, $\alpha$, was calculated to be 0.59$\times$10 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s. From these analysis, the power function, G, was also calculated.

  • We propose a nearly lossless, compact, electrically modulated vertical directional coupler, which is based on the controllable evanescent coupling in a previously proposed graphene-assisted total internal reflection (GA-FTIR) scheme. In the proposed device, two single-mode waveguides are separate by graphene-$SiO_2$-graphene layers. By changing the chemical potential of the graphene layers with a gate voltage, the coupling strength between the waveguides, and hence the coupling length of the directional coupler, is controlled. Therefore, for a properly chosen, fixed device length, when an input wave is launched into one of the waveguides, the ratio of their output powers can be controlled electrically. The operation of the proposed device is analyzed, with the dispersion relations calculated using a model of a one-dimensional slab waveguide. The supermodes in the coupled waveguide are calculated using the finite-element method to estimate the coupling length, realistic devices are designed, and their performance was confirmed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed $3{\mu}m$ by $1{\mu}m$ device achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.11 dB, and a 24-dB extinction ratio between bar and cross states. The proposed low-loss device could enable integrated modulation of a strong optical signal, without thermal buildup.

  • The existing researches on the dynamics of the fluid-conveying pipes only focus on stability and vibration problems, and there is no literature report on the wave propagation of the fluid-conveying pipes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the propagation characteristics of longitudinal and flexural waves in the fluid-conveying pipes. First, it is assumed that the material properties of the fluid-conveying pipes vary based on a power function of the thickness. In addition, it is assumed that the material properties of both the fluid and the pipes are closely depended on temperature. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation and based on the linear theory, the motion equations considering the thermal-mechanical-fluid coupling is derived. Then, the exact expressions of phase velocity and group velocity of longitudinal waves and bending waves in the fluid-conveying pipes are obtained by using the eigenvalue method. In addition, we also studied the free vibration frequency characteristics of the fluid-conveying pipes. In the numerical analysis, we successively studied the influence of temperature, functional gradient index and liquid velocity on the wave propagation and vibration problems. It is found that the temperature and functional gradient exponent decrease the phase and group velocities, on the contrary, the liquid flow velocity increases the phase and group velocities. However, for vibration problems, temperature, functional gradient exponent parameter, and fluid velocity all reduce the natural frequency.

  • Graphene, two-dimensional one-atom-thick planar sheet of carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice, has grabbled appreciable attention due to its extraordinary mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Based on the graphene's high carrier mobility, high frequency graphene field effect transistors have been developed. Graphene is useful for photonic components as well as for the applications in electronic devices. Graphene's unique optical properties allowed us to develop ultra wide-bandwidth optical modulator, photo-detector, and broadband polarizer. Graphene can support SPP-like surface wave because it is considered as a two-dimensional metal-like systems. The SPPs are associated with the coupling between collective oscillation of free electrons in the metal and electromagnetic waves. The charged free carriers in the graphene contribute to support the surface waves at the graphene-dielectric interface by coupling to the electromagnetic wave. In addition, graphene can control the surface waves because its charge carrier density is tunable by means of a chemical doping method, varying the Fermi level by applying gate bias voltage, and/or applying magnetic field. As an extended application of graphene in photonics, we investigated the characteristics of the graphene-based plasmonic waveguide for optical signal transmission. The graphene strips embedded in a dielectric are served as a high-frequency optical signal guiding medium. The TM polarization wave is transmitted 6 mm-long graphene waveguide with the averaged extinction ratio of 19 dB at the telecom wavelength of $1.31{\mu}m$. 2.5 Gbps data transmission was successfully accomplished with the graphene waveguide. Based on these experimental results, we concluded that the graphene-based plasmonic waveguide can be exploited further for development of next-generation integrated photonic circuits on a chip.

  • The sound radiation responses of multi-layer composite plates subjected to harmonic mechanical excitation in hygrothermal environment is numerically investigated. A homogenized micromechanical finite element (FE) based on the higher-order mid-plane kinematics replicating quadratic function as well as the through the thickness stretching effect together with the indirect boundary element (IBE) scheme has been first time employed. The isoparametric Lagrangian element (ten degrees of freedom per node) is used for discretization to attain the hygro-thermo-elastic natural frequencies and the modes of the plate via Hamilton's principle. The effective material properties under combined hygrothermal loading are considered via a micromechanical model. An IBE method is then implemented to attain structure-surrounding coupling and the Helmholtz wave equation is solved to compute the sound radiation responses. The effectiveness of the model is tested by converging it with the similar analytical/numerical results as well as the experimentally acquired data. The present scheme is further hold out for solving diverse numerical illustrations. The results revealed the relevance of the current higher-order FE-IBE micromechanical model in realistic estimation of hygro-thermo-acoustic responses. The geometrical parameters, volume fraction of fiber, layup, and support conditions alongside the hygrothermal load is found to have significant influence on the vibroacoustic characteristics.
