  • The measurement of abnormal change of temperature(temperature anomaly) will help determine the safety of various engineering constructions, as the measurement in body often used to diagnose one's health. Temperature anomaly can be occurred in leakage or seepage of water flow in rocks, and in ground water table etc. Grouting materials injected in fractured rocks generate heat during hardening process. The degree of temperature change is associated directly with heat flow characteristics, that is, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity. density of the surrounding rocks and can afford to assess the grouting efficiency. However, in practice, the use of traditional temperature measuring technique composed of only one single thermal sensor has been fundamentally limited to acquire thermal data sufficient to use for that, partly due to the time-consuming measuring work, partly due to the non-consecutive quality of data. Thus, in this paper, a new concept of temperature measuring technique, what we call, thermal line sensor technique is introduced. In this, the sensors with an accuracy of $0.02^{\circ}$ are inserted at regular intervals in one line cable and addressed by a control device, which enables to fundamentally enhance the capability of data acquisition in time and space. This new technology has been demonstrated on diverse field model experiments. The results were simply meant to be illustrative of a potential to be used for various kinds of temperature measurements encountered in grouting and leakage problems.

  • This study is about comparison of thermal and flow characteristics on the wind & radiant heat shield with STS mesh type screen for offshore. Numerical analysis was conducted to find transmission coefficient in the mesh and then analyse the flow characteristics about wind & radiant heat shield. The experiment method of solar radiation has been used as thermal radiation source to get the performance of radiant heat shield measurement. The sensor radiation device has been used to measure the reduction of solar radiation with various size of cells and at a distance of 0.5m and 1m from the cold face of the wind & radiant heat shield.

  • Fiber optic distributed temperature sensing and thermal line sensor are applied in an observation borehole and a loom deep borehole heat exchanger. For the case of permanently installed system fiber optic DTS is very useful. By comparing with TLS, fiber optic DTS shows good accuracy and reliability. Ground water flow can give influences at heat exchange rate of the heat pump system. According to the hydraulic characteristics and temperature-depth profile, we consider that temperature-depth profile do not seem to be dependent on ground water flow. A permanent installation of fiber optic cable is expected as a reliable temperature measurement technique in a borehole heat exchanger system.

  • To design micro flow sensor varying depending on temperature of driving heater in the detector of Oxide semiconductor, Markov chain MCM(MCMCM), which is a kind of stochastic and microscopic method, was introduced. The formulation for the thermal transfer equation based on the FDM to obtain the MCMCM solution was performed and investigated, in steady state case. MCMCM simulation was successfully applied, so that its application can be expanded to a three-dimensional model with inhomogeneous material and complicated boundary.

  • Two kinds of temperature monitoring technology have been introduced in this study, which can measure coincidently temperatures at many points along a single length of cable. One is to use a thermal sensor cable comprizing of addressable thermal sensors. The other is to use an optic fiber sensor with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The differences between two technologies can be summarized as follows: A thermal sensor cable has a concept of "point sensing" that can measure temperature only at a predefined position. The accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the capability of the individual thermal sensor. On the other hand, an optic fiber sensor has a concept of "distributed sensing" because temperature is measured practically at all points along the fiber optic cable by analysing the intensity of Raman back-scattering when a laser pulse travels along the fiber. Thus, the temperature resolution depends on the measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of two different temperature monitoring techniques in technical and economical sense. To this end, diverse experiments with two techniques were performed and two techniques are applied under the same condition. Considering the results, the thermal sensor cable will be well applicable to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within about loom distance, and the optic fiber sensor will be suitable for long distance such as pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection and power line monitoring etc.

  • A thermal flow sensor has been fabricated and characterized, consisting of a center resistive heater surrounded by two upstream and one downstream temperature sensing resistors. The heater and temperature sensing resistors are fabricated from nitrogen-doped(n-type) polycrystalline silicon carbide(poly-SiC) deposited by LPCVD(low pressure chemical vapor deposition) on LPCVD silicon nitride films on a Si substrate. Cavities were etched into the Si substrate from the front side to create suspended silicon nitride membranes carrying the poly-SiC elements. One upstream sensor is located $50{\mu}m$ from the heater and has a sensitivity of $0.73{\Omega}$/sccm with ${\sim}15\;ms$ rise time in a dynamic range of 1000 sccm. N-type poly-SiC has a linear negative temperature coefficient and a TCR(temperature coefficient of resistance) of $-1.24{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ from room temperature to $100^{\circ}C$.

  • Numerical analysis and experimental verification of a thermal liquid mass flow meter (LMFM) were performed. The configuration of the LMFM was the same as a gas mass flow meter (GMFM), but the opposite results in temperature difference between upstream and downstream thermistors occurred. In the case of the gas, the convection depending on the flow of thermal mass was small and comparable to the conduction through the sensor tube wall. The temperature difference was proportional to the mass flow rate due to their interaction. For the liquid flow, the convection overwhelmed the wall conduction because of the large flow of thermal mass caused by high density. The temperature difference in this case was inversely proportional to the mass flow rate. The tube diameter and heater wiring width are important design parameters, and the optimized sensor can be used to measure and control the infinitesimal liquid flow rate.

  • Microfluidic chips have been frequently utilized to perform biochemical analysis, like cell culture, because they reduce the consumptions of analytes and reagents and automate multi-step analysis processes. It is often critical to monitor temperature in a microchannel for the analyses in order to control a reaction condition of bio or chemical molecules. We propose a novel method to monitor temperature of a microchannel flow by using polydiacetylene (PDA), a conjugated polymer, that has a unique property to transform its color from visible blue to fluorescent red by thermal stress. We inject PDA sensor droplets generated by hydrodynamic instability into a microchannel with a microheater incorporated on the channel bottom. Also, we change the channel temperature by providing the different electric power to the microheater. The results show that the florescence intensity of PDA sensor droplets linearly increases in response to the flow temperature increase within a certain range.

  • In this paper, parallel programming technique by using Java Thread is introduced so as to develop parallel design tool to analyze the small micro flow sensor. To estimate computing time for Thread-level parallelism, the performances of two experimental models for potential problem subject to Thermal transfer equation are examined. As a result, if the number of network PC is increase, computing time for parallelism on network environment is enhanced to be almost n times. The micro sensor design tool based on distributed computing can be utilized to analyze a large scale problem.
