The current study seeks to examine the effects of V and C additions on the mechanical and low thermal expansion properties of a high strength invar base alloy. The base alloy (Fe-36%Ni-0.9%Co-2.75%Mo-0.7Cr-0.23Mn-0.17Si-0.3%C, wt.%) contains $Mo_2C$ carbides, which form as the main precipitate. In contrast, alloys with additions of 0.4%V+0.3%C (alloy A) or 0.4%V+0.45%C (alloy B) contain $Mo_2C$+[V, Mo]C carbides. The average thermal expansion coefficients of these high strength invar based alloys were measured in the range of $5.16{\sim}5.43{\mu}m/m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$ for temperatures of $15{\sim}230^{\circ}C$. Moreover, alloy B showed lower thermal expansion coefficient than the other alloys in this temperature range. For the mechanical properties, the [V, Mo]C improved hardness and strengths(Y.S. and T.S.) of the high strength invar base alloy. T.S.(tensile strength) and Y.S.(yield strength) of hot forged alloy B specimen were measured at 844.6MPa and 518.0MPa, respectively. The tensile fractography of alloy B exhibited a ductile transgranular fracture mode and voids were initiated between the [V, Mo]C particles and the matrix. Superior properties of high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient can be obtained by [V, Mo]C precipitation in alloy B with the addition of 0.4%V and 0.45%C.
The purpose of this study was to measure thermal expansions of dental investments, Biovest(Casting Investment. Dentsply International INC, U.S.A.), Multi-Best (Use for all dental chrome-cobalt alloys, The Ransom & Randolph Co. U.S.A.), Kerr(Inlay Investment. Sybron Kerr, U.S.A.), O. K. (Inlay Investment. Shofu Dental MFG, Co. Japan), Whip-Mix (Cristobalite Inlay Investment. Whip-Mix Corporation. U.S.A.). Thermal expansion of specimens(5mm in diameter and 50mm in length) was measured by a dilatometer at the temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ by comparing expansion between standardized quartz and experimental specimens with heating rate about $300^{\circ}C$/hr. The following results were obtained. 1. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Biovest was $15{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 18/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 28/100. Those of Multi-Best were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 14/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 24/100. 2. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Kerr were $17{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 38/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 48/100. Those of O. K. were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 33/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 43/100 3. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Whip-Mix were $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ritio 40/100 and $12{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ Fein the water powder ratio 50/100. Those of Hi-Heat were $11{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 28/100 and $10{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 38/100.
The theoretical study is developed for predicting the thermal expansion changes of composites which include complex inclusion, which is used three-dimensional ellipsoid model ($a_1>a_2>a_3$), which has two aspect ratios (the primary aspect ratio, $\rho_{\alpha}=a_1/a_3$ and the secondary aspect ratio, $\rho_{\beta}=a_1/a_2$). We can predict the feature of general thermal expansion factors by theoretical approach of matrix with aligned ellipsoidal inclusion using the Eshelby's equivalent tensor. The coefficients of longitudinal linear thermal expansion ${\alpha}_{11}$ decrease to those of inclusions, ${\alpha}_f$, as both aspect ratios increase. The coefficients of transverse linear thermal expansion of composites ${\alpha}_{33}$ initially increase and show the parabolic corves with maximum values, as the concentrations of filler increase. The coefficient of thermal expansion, ${\alpha}_{22}$ in the transverse direction decreases, as $\rho_{\alpha}$ increases, however, ${\alpha}_{22}$ increases as $\rho_{\beta}$ increases. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion of composites, ${\alpha}_{33}$ in the normal direction increases, as $\rho_{\alpha}$ increases, while ${\alpha}_{33}$ decreases as $\rho_{\beta}$ increases.

There are two ways of conventional thermal distortion analysis. One is the thermal elasto-plastic analysis and the other is the equivalent forces method based on inherent strain. The former needs exorbitant analysis time, while the latter cannot obtain results of stress field and it needs much time consumption with loads modeling on curved plates. Such faults in two methods have made difficulties in thermal distortion analysis of a large structure like ship hull. In order to solve them, new kind of thermal distortion analysis method was developed. We devised that the inherent strains was used as direct input factors in forms of boundary conditions. It was embodied by using thermal expansion coefficient in commercial code. We used the pre-calculated inherent strain as thermal expansion coefficient, and endowed nodes with imaginary temperatures. This method was already adopted at hull block welding distortion analysis which was considered as impossible, and gave productive results such as reduction of work time in the dry dock.

The thermophysical properties of Non-Newtonian fluid as the function of the temperature and the concentration are needed in many rheological heat transfer and fluid mechanics problems. The present work investigated the effects of the concentration and the temperature on the thermophysical properties of purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluids such as the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, density, zero-shear-rate viscosity, and zero-shear-rate dynamic viscosity within the experimental temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. The densities of the test fluids were determined as the function of the temperature by utilizing a reference density and the least square equation for the measured isobaric thermal expansion coefficient. As the concentration of purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluid was increased up to 10,000 wppm, the densities were proportionally increased up to 0.4%. The zero-shear-rate viscosities of test fluids were measured before and after the measurements of the first thermal expansion coefficients and the densities of Non-Newtonian fluid. Even though they were changed up to approximately 22% due to thermal aging and cycling, they had no effects on the thermal expansion coefficients and the densities of Non-Newtonian fluid. The zero-shear-rate dynamic viscosities for purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluids were compared with the values for distilled water. They showed the similar trend with the zero-shear-rate viscosities due to small differences in the densities for both distilled water and purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluid.
Five eucryptite and ten spodumene compositional powders were syntehsized from three sillimanite group, two kaolin group, and five pyrophyllite group silicate minerals. Those powders were isotatically pressed and fired at 1200~135$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, and then the sintered bodies were characterized. Silicate minerals with molar ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 correspond to those of eucryptite and spodumene are kaolin and pyrophyllite group silicate minerals, respectively. Sintering characteristics of eucryptite from kaolin group and spodumene from pyrophyllite group mineral were superior to those from other silicate minerals. Eucryptite sintered bodies with 95~97% relative densities and densified microstructures can be obtained using Hadong pink kaolin as starting materials by sintering over broad temperature zone(1250~135$0^{\circ}C$). The eucryptite sintered bodies which were fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs, from Hadong pink kaolin had within 3.0wt% microstructural compositional variations compaired with stoichiometric compound, and had good negative thermal expansiion property with -3.55$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient. Spodumene sintered bodies which were prepared from pyrophyllite group silicate minerals, had dense microstructures and high densities by densification through liquid phase sintering with enlarged temperature range. The specimens which were fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs from Gusipyrophillite, had dense microstructure with crystallines mainly, and low thermal expansion property with 0.62$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient. The porous texture and residual glass phase in LAS system ceramics which were prepared from silicate minerals, tend to increase the thermal expansion properties of sintered bodies to positive direction.

By using shear mixing and ultrasonication, we fabricated specimens of well-dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotube composites. To confirm the proper dispersion of the filler, we used scanning electron microscopy images for quantitative evaluation and a tensile test for qualitative assessment. Furthermore, the coefficients of thermal expansion of several specimens having different filler contents were calculated from the measured thermal strains and temperatures of the specimens. Based on the microscopy images of the well-dispersed fillers and the small deviations in the measurements of the tensile strength and stiffness, we confirmed the proper dispersion of nanotubes in the epoxy. As the filler contents were increased, the values of tensile strength increased from 58.33 to 68.81 MPa, and those of stiffness increased from 2.93 to 3.27 GPa. At the same time, the coefficients of thermal expansion decreased. This implies better thermal stability of the specimen.

Hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy is used much to automatic parts and material for the electronic parts because of the low coefficient of thermal expansion, superior thermal stability and superior wear resistance. In this work, A390 alloy specimens were fabricated for control of the Si particle size by various processes, such as spray-casting, permanent mold-casting and squeeze-casting. To minimize the effect of microporosity of the specimens, hot extrusion was carried out under equal condition. Each specimens were evaluated tensile properties at room temperature and thermal expansion properties in the range from room temperature to 400$^{\circ}C$. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the spray-cast and extruded specimens which have fine and well distributed Si particles were improved greatly compare to the permanent mold-cast and extruded ones. Specimens which have finer Si particles showed higher ultimate tensile strength and elongation than those having large Si particle size, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the specimens increased linearly with Si particle size. In case of the repeated high temperature exposures, thermal expansion properties of the spray-cast and extruded specimens were found to be more stable than those of the others due to the effect of fine and well distributed Si particles.
Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. It is well known that volume expansion due to the phase transformation could influence on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. For this purpose, the analysis is carried out in two regions. i.e., heating and cooling, because the variation of material properties following a phase transformation in cooling is different in comparison with the case in heating, even at the same temperature. The variation of material properties following phase transformation is considered by the adjustment of specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient, and the distribution of residual stress in analysis is compared with that of experiment by previous study. consequently, in this study, simplified numerical procedures considering phase transformation, which based on a commercial finite element package was established through comparing with the experimental data of residual stress distribution by other researcher. To consider the phase transformation effect on residual stress relaxation, the transition of mechanical and thermal property such as thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat capacity was found by try and error method in this analysis.
We analyzed thermal stress of the STS VOD ladle by the variation of material property of refractory, and determined the location of back filler using FE analysis. Thermal distribution of refractory of ladle between hot face and back face were decreased by the increasing the thermal conductivity, and thermal stress of refractory were decreased about 2 to 4 times with the decreasing the young's modulus coefficients. Back filler, which is constructed to absorb the thermal expansion of dolomite refractory, has relatively low thermal conductivity. Inner side of refractory of ladle maintained high temperature, but temperature of outer side of ladle decreased low. Consequently, inner expansion and outer contraction were appeared. and thermal stress were increased, so thermal stress by the construction of back filler were increased.
