The theory of Fourier heat conduction predicts accurately the temperature profiles of a system in a non-equilibrium steady state. However, in the case of transient states at the nanoscale, its applicability is significantly limited. The limitation of the classical Fourier's theory was overcome by C. Cattaneo and P. Vernotte who developed the theory of non-Fourier heat conduction in 1958. Although this new theory has been used in various thermal science areas, it requires considerable mathematical skills for calculating analytical solutions. The aim of this study was the identification of a newer and a simpler type of solution for the hyperbolic partial differential equations of the non-Fourier heat conduction. This constitutes the first trial in a series of planned studies. By inspecting each term included in the proposed solution, the theoretical feasibility of the solution was achieved. The new analytical solution for the non-Fourier heat conduction is a simple exponential function that is compared to the existing data for justification. Although the proposed solution partially satisfies the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation, it cannot simulate a thermal wave behavior. However, the results of this study indicate that it is possible to obtain the theoretical solution of the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation by improving the form of the proposed solution.

In this work, an analytical formulation based on both hyperbolic shear deformation theory and stress function, is presented to study the nonlinear post-buckling response of symmetric functionally graded plates supported by elastic foundations and subjected to in-plane compressive, thermal and thermo-mechanical loads. Elastic properties of material are based on sigmoid power law and varying across the thickness of the plate (S-FGM). In the present formulation, Von Karman nonlinearity and initial geometrical imperfection of plate are also taken into account. By utilizing Galerkin procedure, closed-form expressions of buckling loads and post-buckling equilibrium paths for simply supported plates are obtained. The effects of different parameters such as material and geometrical characteristics, temperature, boundary conditions, foundation stiffness and imperfection on the mechanical and thermal buckling and post-buckling loading capacity of the S-FGM plates are investigated.

This paper introduces a study on reliability-driven device placement using simulated annealing algorithm which can be applicable to MCM or electronic systems embedded in a spacecraft running at thermal conduction environment. Reliability of the unit's has been predicted with the devices' junction temperatures calculated from FDM solver and optimized by simulated annealing algorithm. Simulated annealing in this paper adopts swapping devices method as a perturbation. This paper describes and compares the optimization simulation results with respect to two objective functions: minimization of failure rate and minimization of average junction temperature. Annealing temperature variation simulation case and equilibrium coefficient variation simulation case are also presented at the two respective objective functions. This paper proposes a new approach for reliability optimization of MCM and electronic systems considering those simulation results.

Although it has been well known that many metal hydrides are promising to use for hydrogen storage and other applications, some difficulties still remain. Metal hydrides, particularly in powder form, have very poor thermal conductivity. The hydrogen storage alloys degrade intrinsically or extrinsically during repeated hydriding and dehydriding. Elimination of these problems is very important in the practical applications. In order to prevent degradation and to improve the thermal conductivity, the hydrogen storage characteristics of rare-earth type alloy encapsulated with Cu or Ni by means of chemical plating have been investigated. No changes has occured in hydrogen absorption capacity and equilibrium pressure even though the alloy powder is microencapsulated. The first hydrogen absorption rate of the alloy encapsulated increased considerably comparing to uncapsulated sample. In the case of encapsulating the fine powder ($>10{\mu}m$) and subsequent compacting by $8ton/cm^2$, shape of compact is maintained regardless of hydriding and dehydriding. The degree of degradation of the alloy caused by impurity gas of CO or $O_2$ was decreased prominently by encapsulation.

Shallow p+-n junctions were formed by low-energy ion implantation and dual-step annealing processes The dopant implantation was performed into the crystalline substrates using $BF_2$ ions. The annealing was performed with a rapid thermal processor and a furnace. FA+RTA annealing sequence exhibited better junction characteristics than RTA+FA thermal cycle from the viewpoint of junction depth. A new simulator is designed to model boron diffusion in silicon, which is especially useful for analyzing the annealing process subsequent to ion implantation. The model which is used in this simulator takes into account nonequilibrium diffusion, reactions of point defects, and defect-dopant pairs considering their charge states, and the dopant inactivation by introducing a boron clustering reaction. Using a resonable parameter values, the simulator covers not only the equilibrium diffusion conditions but also the nonequilibrium post-implantation diffusion. Using initial conditions and boundary conditions, coupled diffusion equation is solved successfully. The simulator reproduced experimental data successfully.

A numerical program has been developed for the simulation of automotive engine cooling system. The program determines the mass flow rate of engine coolant circulating the engine cooling system and radiator cooling air when the engine speed is adopted by appropriate empirical correlation. The program used the method of thermal balance at individual element through the model for radiator component in radiator analysis. This study has developed the program that predicts the coolant mass flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of each component in the engine cooling system (engine, transmission, radiator and oil cooler) in its state of thermal equilibrium. This study also combined the individual programs and united into the total performance analysis program of the engine cooling system operating at a constant vehicle speed. An air conditioner system is also included in this engine cooling system so that the condenser of the air conditioner faces the radiator. The effect of air conditioner to the cooling performance, e.g., radiator inlet temperature, of the radiator and engine system was examined. This study could make standards of design of radiator capacity using heat rejection with respect to the mass flow rate of cooling air. This study is intended to predict the performance of each component at design step or to simulate the system when specification of the component is modified, and to analyze the performance of the total vehicle engine cooling system.
Strengthening of reinforced concrete beams with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer plates/sheets technique has become widespread in the last two decades. Although a great deal of research has been conducted on simply supported RC beams, a few studies have been carried out on continuous beams strengthened with FRP composites. This paper presents a simple uniaxial nonlinear analytical model that is able to accurately estimate the load carrying capacity and the behaviour of damaged RC continuous beams flexural strengthened with externally bonded prestressed composite plates on both of the upper and lower fibers, taking into account the thermal load. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, i.e., the damaged concrete beam, the FRP plate and the adhesive layer. The flexural analysis results and analytical predictions for the prestressed composite strengthened damaged RC continuous beams were compared and showed very good agreement in terms of the debonding load, yield load, and ultimate load. The use of composite materials increased the ultimate load capacity compared with the non strengthened beams. The major objective of the current model is to help engineers' model FRP strengthened RC continuous beams in a simple manner. Finally, this research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the FRP-damaged RC hybrid structures.
This study attempts to investigate the impact of thickness stretching and nonlinear hygro-thermo-mechanical loading on the bending behavior of FG beams. Young's modulus, thermal expansion, and moisture concentration coefficients vary gradually and continuously according to a power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituent materials. In addition, the interaction between the thermal, mechanical, and moisture loads is involved in the governing equilibrium equations. Using the present developed analytical model and Navier's solution technique, the numerical results of non-dimensional stresses and displacements are compared with those obtained by other 3D theories. Furthermore, the present analytical model is appropriate for investigating the static bending of FG beams exposed to intense hygro-thermo-mechanical loading used for special technical applications in aerospace, automobile, and civil engineering constructions.

The main objective of this research work is to present analytical solutions for the thermoelastic bending analysis of sandwich plates made of functionally graded materials with an arbitrary gradient. The governing equations of equilibrium are solved for a functionally graded sandwich plates under the effect of thermal loads. The transverse shear and normal strain and stress effects on thermoelastic bending of such sandwich plates are considered. Field equations for functionally graded sandwich plates whose deformations are governed by either the shear deformation theories or the classical theory are derived. Displacement functions that identically satisfy boundary conditions are used to reduce the governing equations to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. The results of the shear deformation theories are compared together. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of functionally graded metal-ceramic plates are investigated.
An improved voltage modulation method (VMM) was used to control the heat release and adsorption properties of the adsorbent. In this work, the voltage and flux modulation methods were considered under unified experimental conditions of dissociative surface ionization (SI) of polyatomic organic molecules, the criteria were found when under VMM conditions the current relaxation of SI carries information about the kinetic properties of thermal desorption of ionizable dissociation particles arriving on the surface of polyatomic molecules. Conditions were found under which the relaxation of the ionic current in the flux modulation method is determined by the kinetics of the heterogeneous dissociation reaction of the original polyatomic molecules. The values of the thermal desorption rate constant K+ and the activation energy E+ obtained with VMM for desorption of (CH3)2NCH+2 ions with m/z 58 by adsorption of imipramine and amitriptyline molecules agree well with each other and with the results for the desorption of the same ions by adsorption of other molecules. This confirms one of the basic conditions for the equilibrium process SI - the a degree (β coefficient) of the same particles SI on the same emitter surface is the same and does not depend on the way these particles are formed on the emitter surface.
