  • This paper decribed the development of Thermal Imaging Oservation System(TIOS) using the serial-parallel scan method. The detectors scan five lines at a tine. These are put into serial order by electronic scan converter. Digital memory and high speed multiplexer are used for the serial conversion instead of charge coupled devices. As a result, thermal imaging system be presented with exellent performance which MRTD value is less than $0.5^{\circ}K$ at 7.5 cycles/mm.

  • The thermal decomposition characteristics of boron-potassium nitrate ($BKNO_3$) were investigated by non-isothermal thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Two steps of mass loss were observed in the temperature range between room temperature and $600^{\circ}C$. Kinetic parameters of the thermal decompositions were evaluated from the measured TGA curves using the AKTS Thermokinetics Software. For the first step of mass loss ($220-360^{\circ}C$) corresponding to the thermal decomposition process of the binder (Laminac/Lupersol), the activation energy is in the range of approximately 120-270 kJ/mol when evaluated by Friedman's iso-conversional method, while the value of activation energy varies in the range of approximately 150-400 kJ/mol during the second step process ($360-550^{\circ}C$).

  • In this paper, we developed a temperature measurement system based on an infrared temperature imaging module for thermal safety verification of a plasma skin treatment device (PSTD). We tested a pilot product of the low-temperature PSTD using the system, and the temperature increase of each plasma torch was well-monitored in real-time. Additionally, through the approximation of the temperature increase of the plasma torches, a certain limitation of the plasma treatment time on skin was established with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guideline. We determined an appropriate plasma treatment time ($T_{Safe}$ < 24 minutes) using the configured temperature measurement system. We believe that the temperature measurement system has a potential to be employed for testing thermal safety and suitability of various medical devices and industrial instruments.

  • Plants are able to recognize even small changes in surrounding temperatures to optimize their growth and development. At warm temperatures, plants exhibit diverse architectural adjustments, including hypocotyl and petiole elongation, leaf hyponasty, and reduced stomatal density. However, it was previously unknown how such warm temperatures affected the early stages of seedling development. In our recent study, we demonstrated that the RNA-binding protein, FCA, is critical for sustaining chlorophyll biosynthesis during early seedling development, which is a prerequisite for autotrophic transition at warm temperatures. FCA plays a dual role in this thermal response. It inhibits the rapid degradation of protochlorophyllide oxidoreductases (PORs) that mediate chlorophyll biosynthesis. In addition, it induces the expression of POR genes at the chromatin level, which contributes to maintaining functional enzyme levels. Our findings provide molecular basis for the thermal adaptation of chlorophyll biosynthesis during the early stages of seedling development in nature.

  • The thermal decomposition characteristics of the ZPP(Zirconium/Potassium perchlorate), widely used as a primary charge of initiators, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The DSC results with different heating rates were elaborated with AKTS-Thermokinetics software for the determination of the kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition of ZPP. There was good agreement between the experimental and the simulation curves, based on the determined kinetic parameters, which indicates the validity of the kinetic description of the thermal decomposition process of ZPP.

  • Thermal batteries are heat-activated primary reserve power sources that use inorganic salt as electrolytes and specially designed to meet extremely long or environmentally severe storage requirements. They are primarily used to deliver high power for relatively short periods in such applications as fuzes, missiles, ordnance and other military applications. In this paper, we describe a general overview and research trends on electrode materials for thermal batteries.

  • Recently, the current thermal battery technology needs new materials for electrodes in the power and energy density to meet various space and defense requirements. In this paper, to replace the pellet type Li(Si) anode having limitations of the formability and capacity, electrochemical properties of the lithium anode with high density for thermal batteries were investigated. The lithium anode (Li 17, 15, 13 wt%) was fabricated by mixing the molten lithium and iron powder used as a binder to hold the molten lithium at $500^{\circ}C$. The single cell with 13 wt% lithium showed a stable performance. The 2.06 V (OCV) of the lithium anode was significantly improved compared to 1.93 V (OCV) of the Li(Si) anode. Specific capacities during the first phase of the lithium anode and Li(Si) were 1,632 and $1,181As{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. As a result of the thermal battery performance test at both room and high temperatures, the voltage and operating time of lithium anode thermal batteries were superior to those of using Li(Si) anode thermal batteries. The power and energy densities of Li anode thermal batteries were also remarkably improved.

  • The objective of the present study is to develop a thermal comfort measurement system for ergonomic sensibility analysis. The system can measure basic components for thermal comfort, such as skin temperature and clothing temperature/humidity level. A study on the linearization of temperature and humidity sensors has been conducted for more accurate and stable sensor development. The software has been developed for thermal comfort analysis for both clothing thermal environments and indoor environments.

  • Development of supersonic flying vehicle is one of the most latest issue in modern military technology. Specifically, structural integrity of supersonic flying vehicle can be verified by high temperature structural test. High temperature structural test is required to consider thermal load caused by aerodynamic heating while applying structural load simultaneously. Tubular quartz lamps are generally used to generate thermal load by emitting infrared radiation. In this study, modified heat flux model of tubular quartz lamp is proposed based on existing model. Parameters of the proposed model are optimized upon measured heat flux in three dimensions. Finally, thermal load of plate specimen is designed by the heat flux model. In conclusion, it is possible to predict heat flux applied on plate specimen and desired thermal load of high temperature structural test can be obtained.
