Two-phase flow of liquid and gas through pipe lines are frequently encountered in nuclear power plant or industrial facility. Pressure waves which can be generated by a valve operation or any other cause in pipe lines propagate through the two-phase flow, often leading to severe noise and vibration problems or fatigue failure of pipe line system. It is of practical importance to predict the propagation characteristics of the pressure waves for the safety design for the pipe line. In the present study, a theoretical analysis is performed to understand the propagation characteristics of a weak shock wave in a bubbly flow. A wave equation is developed using a small perturbation method to analyze the weak shock wave through a bubbly flow with comparably low void fractions. It is known that the elasticity of pipe and void fraction significantly affect the propagation speed of shock wave, but the frequency of relaxation oscillation which is generated behind the shock wave is not strongly influenced by the elasticity of pipe. The present analytical results are in close agreement with existing experimental data.

Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave which makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis which is used both Love wave dispersion information and Rayleigh wave dispersion information was proposed. Purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different. This analysis technique is consisted of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix determined to the ground system and DLSS(Damped Least Square Solution) as a inversion technique. The application of this analysis was examined through the field test.

Based on the idea of eigen-mode expansion, a method to analyze the reflection of Lamb wave from a finite vertical discontinuity of plate is theoretically derived and verified by experiment. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental result, and this strongly suggests that eigen-mode expansion method could be used for solution of inverse scattering problem for ultrasonic testing using Lamb wave.

An analytical closed-form solution for wave propagation velocity and damping in saturated porous media is presented in this paper The fully coupled field model with compressible solid Brains and pore water were used to derive this solution. An engineering approach for the analysis of fully saturated porous media was adopted and closed-form solutions for one dimensional wave propagation in a homogeneous domain were derived. The solution is highly versatile in that it considers compression of the solid grains, compression of the pore water, deformation of the porous skeleton, and spatial damping and can be used to compute wavespeeds of first and second kind and damping coefficients in various geologic materials. This solution provides a means of analyzing the influence of material property variations on wavespeed and attenuation. In Part 2 of this work the theoretical solution is incorporated into the numerical code and the code is used in a parametric study on wave propagation velocity and damping.

This paper showed that theoretical site attenuation curves were obtained simply by the method of moments analysis for current integral equations on antennas. Since the expansion coefficients of driving and receiving points were calculated from the method of moments procedure, site attenuations were evaluated simply using these basic antenna parameters. Theoretical site attenuations were calculated with half-wave resonant dipoles connected directly to a 50 ohm receiving system and connected to a 72/50 ohm matching network, respectively. Results were compared with other theoretical studies reported so far. Also included were experimental results for site attenuations to prove the validity of theoretical analysis.

Active control has been partly applied to suppress the re-reflecting waves in wave basin with plunger-type wave maker to obtain desirable waves. This limitation comes from the non-confirmable theoretical background to the control algorithm. This paper proposes control logic to overcome this drawback, based on the impulse response function for propagating waves between control input and the wave height. The performances have been verified as reasonable in practical application by comparing with the propagating wave components in numerical wave basin, using wave decomposition method. Moreover, the control logic can also give useful wave-absorbing performance after cessation of wave generation.

A finite element program for elastic stress wave propagation is developed in order to investigate the shape of stress field and analysis the magnitude of stress wave intensity at time increment. Accuracy and reliance of the finite element analysis are acquired when the element size is smaller than the product of the stress wave speed and the critical value of increasing time step. In the finite element analysis and theoretical solution, the longitudinal stress wave is propagated to the similar direction of impact load, and the stress wave intensity is expressed in terms of the ratio of propagated area. The direction of shear wave is declined at an angle of 45 degrees compared with longitudinal stress wave and the speed of shear wave is half of the longitudinal stress wave.
The resonant column testing determines the shear modulus and material damping factor dependent on the shear strain magnitude, based on the wave-propagation theory. The determination of the dynamic soil properties requires the theoretical formulation of the dynamic behavior of the resonant column testing system. One of the theoretical formulations is the use of the wave equation for the soil specimen in the resonant column testing device. Wood, Richart and Hall derived the wave equation by assuming the linear elastic soil, and didn't take the material damping into consideration. Hardin incorporated the viscoelastic damping of soil in the wave equation, but he had to assume the material damping factor for the determination of the shear modulus. For the better theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, this study derived a new wave equation to include the viscosity of soil, and proposed an approach for the solution. Also, in this study, the equation of motion for the testing system, which is another approach of the theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, was also derived. The equation of motion leads to the better understanding of the resonant column testing, which includes the dynamic magnification factor and the phase angle of the response. For the verification of the proposed equation of motion for the resonant column testing, the finite element analysis was performed for the resonant column testing. The comparison of the dynamic magnification factors and the phase angles far the system response were performed.

A feasibility of a trial test method was evaluated analytically, in which the elastic modulus of a soil deposit was tried to estimate by analyzing dynamic signals measured during conducting the SPT. If there existed a reliable relationship between the impedance ratio of a rod to a soil and the amplitude ratio of a reflected to an incident wave signal at the tip of steel rod contacting the soil surface, it was expected that one could determine the impedance of soil, and then roughly estimate the elastic modulus from the impedance. For a simple rod-soil system, the existence of the relevant relationship was verified in this study by analyzing computed wave signals propagating up and down through the rod. On the basis of these results, thus, a potential of the test method to practical applications could be seen. However, apparent theoretical shortcomings possessed in this approach were also realized since the soil part had an unconfined contact area where contacted with the rod. Therefore, it was concluded that further studies needed to be conducted, in which the reliable theoretical relationship between the impedance and the amplitude ratio as well as the effective contacting soil area contributing to wave reflection should be justified.

To improve maritime safety, it is very important not only to make safer design and operation but also to do proper response in case of maritime casualty. The large-scaled casualties will be caused by loss of structural strength and stability due to the progressive flooding and enlargement of damage by the effect of waves and wind. To prevent foundering and structural failure, the prediction of ship motion behavior of damaged ship in wave is necessary. This paper describes the motion behavior of damaged ship in waves through theoretical and experimental studies. A time domain theoretical model of damaged ship motions and accidental flooding, which can be applied to any type of ship or arrangement and considers the effects of flooding of compartments, has been developed. The model tests have been carried out in regular and irregular waves with different wave heights and directions in ship motion basin. Those were performed for three different damaged conditions such as engine room bottom damage, side shell damage and bow visor damage of a Ro-Ro ship. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results was performed.
