Experimental Verification of the Unified Formula for Electromechanical Coupling Coefficient of Piezoelectric Resonators

  • In a previous theoretical paper, we have derived a unified formula by considering 2-D coupled mode vibrations. The unified formula for electromechanical coupling coefficient of piezoelectric resonator was verified experimentally. The capacitance change near the resonant frequency was investigated to estimate the effective coupling coefficient of the resonator instead of the conventional method based on I-D model. The susceptance spectra were measured for the seven samples of piezoelectric resonator with different aspect ratio. Excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental results was obtained.

  • The paper presents both theoretical and experimental study for dynamic instabilities of a vertical cantilevered pipe with two attached lumped masses conveying fluid. The two attached lumped masses can be considered as valves or some mechanical parts in real pipe system. Eigenvalue behaviors depending on the flow velocity are investigated for the change of positions and magnitudes of an attached lumped mass and a tip mass. In order to verify appropriaty of numerical solutions, experiments were accomplished. Theoretical predictions have a good agreement with experimental ones.

  • Theoretical and experimental drawing characteristics for the single circular and square drawbeads are discussed. During the blank holding process, the strain distributions of upper and lower skins of specimens, and the die reactional forces are analysed by F. E. M., and they are compared with the experimental results. The drawbead restraining forces and strain distributions for the drawn specimens by the various drawing length are also analysed and compared with the experimental results. It is concluded that the theoretical simulations and results could be very useful for the prediction of real cases.

  • To obtain low resistance and high efficiency energy-saving ship, minimum total resistance hull form design method is studied based on potential flow theory of wave-making resistance and considering the effects of tail viscous separation. With the sum of wave resistance and viscous resistance as objective functions and the parameters of B-Spline function as design variables, mathematical models are built using Nonlinear Programming Method (NLP) ensuring the basic limit of displacement and considering rear viscous separation. We develop ship lines optimization procedures with intellectual property rights. Series60 is used as parent ship in optimization design to obtain improved ship (Series60-1) theoretically. Then drag tests for the improved ship (Series60-1) is made to get the actual minimum total resistance hull form.

  • This paper is a study on the improvement effects by quick lime pile through theoretical analysis and in-situ construction test. Effects of strength increase is studied to verify the improvement effects of soft ground arounding quick lime pile. First, engineering characteristics of quick lime and ground was studied, in the second place, laboratory test(consolidation test, triaxial compression test) and in-situ test(portable cone penetration test, vane test) were peformed for verification of strength increase of adjacent ground. Finally, the results of in-situ test were compared with those of theorecal study. From in-situ test results, strength at 28th curing days(6.11-6.55t/㎡) was twice as great as strength before improvement(3.06t/㎡) and was slightly greater than theoretical value(4.95t/㎡).

  • We report a theoretical description of ferromagnetic vortex motion in sub-micrometer size magnetic thin film. Based on Thiele's equation combined with later theoretical achievements, we derive the analytic description of dynamics of ferromagnetic vortex core as a damped harmonic oscillatory motion. Consequently, the relations about frequency and damping constant in damped harmonic oscillation are presented. The validity of the results is verified through micromagnetic simulation.

  • Dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) in the form of tuned sloshing dampers (TSDs) and tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are commonly used to reduce the wind-induced motion of high-rise buildings. Full-scale performance of structure-DVA systems must be evaluated during the DVA commissioning process using structural monitoring data. While the random decrement technique (RDT) is sometimes employed to evaluate the DVA performance, it is shown to have no theoretical justification for application to structure-DVA systems, and to produce erroneous results. Subsequently, several practical methods with a sound theoretical basis are presented and illustrated using simulated and real-world data. By monitoring the responses of the structure and DVA simultaneously, it is possible to directly measure the effective damping of the system or perform system identification from which the DVA performance can be evaluated.

  • To consider dynamic magnification effect at the static design stage, impact load factor is applied to design load. Current impact load factor adopted EUROCODE without verification while Japan suggested impact load factor including velocity of high-speed train throughout theoretical and experimental studies. On the purpose of evaluate current impact load factor, this study investigated the calculation of impact load factor from dynamic response of running train.

  • Visibility impairment phenomenon due to various air pollutants is a highly complex problem To understand this problem in Seoul, (1) theoretical background of visibility impairment; (2) methods to quantify visual range and to assess contribution of each air pollutant to the visibility impairment problem; and (3) previous field measurements and modeling studies, both in Korea and abroad, are critically reviewed.
