The Analyses about Axisymmetric Deformation of a thin pressure vessel by orthotropic composites (Orthotropic 복합재료로 만든 두께가 얇은 압력용기의 변형에 관한 연구)

  • The analytic solution of displacements of thin cylindrical pressure vessel made by carbon fiber T700/Epoxy was obtained using equilibrium equations of orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Equilibrium equations with the assumed displacement field were derived from a reasonable description of the behavior of thin elastic shells using principle of virtual work. Some analyses of the theoretical solution are presented and compared with the results of hydraulic tests of the pressure vessel.

  • Fracture resistance (J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, decreased under tension-compression loading condition. This phenomenon was proved by several former researches, but the causes have not been clear yet. The objective of this paper is to investigate the cause of this phenomenon. On the basis of fracture resistance curve test results, strain hardening hypothesis, stress redistribution hypothesis and crack opening hypothesis were built. In this study, hardness tests, Automated Ball Indentation(ABI) tests, theoretical stress field analyses, and crack opening analyses were performed to prove the hypotheses. From this study, strain-hardening of material, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip, and crack opening effects are proved as the causes of the decrease hypothesis.

Comparative Study on the Motion Responses for a 40ft Class Cruise Leisure Boat (40ft 급 크루즈 레저보트의 운동성능 해석 및 모형시험 비교 연구)

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of a planing craft are very sensitive to the hull form variations, especially when the craft navigates with high-speed. Therefore, we need to verify hydrodynamic performances of the craft during the process of hull form design. In this paper, motion performances of a 40ft class cruise leisure boat are evaluated by both model tests and theoretical analyses using two different methods. Model tests are carried out at calm sea and regular wave conditions using high speed towing carriage installed in SNU towing tank. Theoretical methods used are a empirical method proposed by Martin (1976) and a potential method based on Rankine panel (DNV, 2010). The results from the theoretical methods are compared with and verified by those of model tests. Results of empirical formula showed somewhat larger motion RAOs and resonant frequencies than those of model tests. Potential based method showed even larger discrepancies with the model test results. From the analyses of comparison results, we could confirm the limitation of each theoretical method and suggest the way of improvement for the better prediction of motion performances.

Prediction of Maximum Yields of Metabolites and Optimal Pathways for Their Production by Metabolic Flux Analysis

  • The intracellular metabolic fluxes can be calculated by metabolic flux analysis, which uses a stoichiometric model for the intracellulal reactions along with mass balances around the intracellular metabolites. In this study, metabolic flux analyses were carried out to estimate flux distributions for the maximum in silico yields of various metabolites in Escherichia coli. The maximum in silico yields of acetic acid and lactic acid were identical to their theoretical yields. On the other hand, the in silico yields of succinic acid and ethanol were only 83% and 6.5% of their theoretical yields, respectively. The lower in silico yield of succinic acid was found to be due to the insufficient reducing power. but this lower yield could be increased to its theoretical yield by supplying more reducing power. The maximum theoretical yield of ethanol could be achieved, when a reaction catalyzed by pyruvate decarboxylase was added in the metabolic network. Futhermore, optimal metabolic pathways for the production of various metabolites could be proposed, based on the results of metabolic flux analyses. In the case of succinic acid production, it was found that the pyruvate carboxylation pathway should be used for its optimal production in E. coli rather than the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylation pathway.

  • In conventional three-phase rectifiers, it was necessary to use a transformer to obtain low output voltage. In this paper, we propose a characteristic experimental of three-phase diode rectifiers circuit that achieves low voltage by using a very simple circuit configuration that does not have a transformer and does not need any complex control. We also describe the operation principle of the proposed circuit, and der?ive a theoretical formula for its current waveform. On the basis these theoretical values with experimentally obtained input output current characteristics, current amplification factor, and output voltage characteristics, allowed us to confirm the soundness of our theoretical analyses.

Theoretical analyses for a 2-2 cement-based piezoelectric curved composite with electrode layers

  • Based on the general theory of elasticity, the static behavior of 2-2 cement-based piezoelectric curved composites is investigated. The actuator consists of 2 cement layers and 1 piezoelectric layer. Considering the electrode layer between the cement layer and the piezoelectric layer as the elastic layer, the exact solutions of the mechanical and electrical fields of the curved composites are obtained by utilizing the Airy stress function method. Furthermore, the theoretical results are compared with the FEM results and good agreements (with almost no error) are obtained, thus proving the validity of this study. Furthermore, the influence of certain parameters is discussed, which can help to get the desired displacements and stresses. Finally, it is seen that the analytical model established in this paper works well, which could benefit the design of this kind of cement-based smart devices.

Noise Reduction Characteristics of a Double Air-gap Resonator (이중 에어갭 공명기의 소음 저감 특성)

  • In the paper, the noise reduction characteristics of a double-gap resonator, which is installed inside an enclosed cavity and is composed of two air-gaps and two partition sheets, are introduced by theoretical analyses and experimets. Analysis for a simple, theoretical model reveals that the double-gap resonator is more effective than the single-gap resonator that consists of an air-gap and a partition sheet, in that the former requires a smaller space than the latter. Furthermore, this theoretical conclusion is verified by comparison experiments using an actually manufactured enclosed cavity, of which the boundary surfaces are made of thick, stiff panels that can be assumed as rigid walls.

Analyses on Working Frequency of A γ-type Free-piston Stirling Engine (감마형 자유피스톤 스털링 엔진의 작동주파수 분석)

  • The dynamic characteristics of a free-piston stirling engine(FPSE) with regard to the working frequency is investigated from theoretical and experimental studies. The FPSE is modeled as a two degree-of-freedom linear vibration system. A theoretical expression on the working frequency is derived from the instability condition for self-excitation based on the linear vibration model. A ${\gamma}$-type free-piston stirling engine is fabricated for experimental studies, and its working frequency is measured on various heater temperatures. Comparisons between the theoretical and experimental results reveal that the working frequency of the test FPSE depends on both the temperature of the compression space and the temperature difference between the expansion and compression spaces.
