  • Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbology of the plants to Theaceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : Books and research papers about Herbology which published at home and abroad were examined. Results : A list was made about Theaceae plant which were cultivated or grew naturally in Korea, after investigated the data on domestic and foreign Theaceae plants. Out of those lists, serviceable plants were selected and with those available plants, their distributions were analysed and parts which can be used as medicines were divided into 3 categories such as oriental medicine name, scientific name and non-official name. Theaceae's properties flavor, channels they use, effects, and toxicity were also noted. Theaceae (grew in Korea) were divided into 6 classes with 12 species. Out of those, 4 classes with 4 species were found serviceable which indicates 33% of all. Out of all 12 species of Theaceae family, Camellia genus and Eurya genus were found 4 species, which were shown the most. Among 4 genus of Theaceae species, medicinal plants were all one species each. Out of all serviceable parts in Theaceae, Folium parts took first place as 4 species. There are toxic, the 2 species and 2 parts survefy said. Conclusion : There were totaled to 6 genera and 12 species in Theaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 4 genera, 4 species, some 33% in total.

  • Pollen grains of six geners and six species from Korean Theaceae were observed with light and scanning electron microscopes. Pollen morphology divided the investigated species into the tricolporoidate Theoideae and the tricolporate Ternstroemiodideae. On the basis of surface sculpturing pattern, further palynological relationships and classificatin were understood. Some of the nomenclatural problems were discussed along with the palynological results.

  • Camellia tuyenquangensis (Theaceae), a new yellow species of camellia from the Chiem Hoa district of the Tuyen Quang province in Vietnam, is described and illustrated. Camellia tuyenquangensis is similar to Camellia luongii but different from the latter species in several morphological features: leaves oblong-ovate to narrow elliptic; flowers 1-2; bracteoles glabrous on both sides; sepal margins ciliate; style cleft one half of the length. The morphological data provisionally support its placement in Camellia sect. Chrysantha Chang.

  • Camellia pukhangensis (Theaceae), a new species with yellow flowers from Quy Hop District, Nghe An Province, Vietnam, is described and illustrated. Camellia pukhangensis has nearly sessile leaves with an attenuate to caudate apex, cordate base, hirsute abaxial surface, hirsute adaxial midrib, hirsute petiole, deltate to ovate perules hairy on the outer surface, bright yellow orbicular to obovate petals hairy on the outer surface, androecium pubescent to two-thirds from the base, pubescent ovoid ovary with three (or four) locules and three (or four) pubescent styles free to the base. The morphological data support the provisional placement of C. pukhangensis in Camellia sect. Archecamellia Sealy.

  • In the course of screening for antioxidant compounds by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), a total extract of the twigs of Stewartia koreana (Theaceae) was found to show potent antioxidant activity. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract led to the isolation of six phenolic compounds, ampelopsin (1), catechin (2), proanthocyanidin-A2 (3), fraxin (4), (2R, 3R)-taxifolin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (5), and (2S, 3S)-taxifolin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (6), as active principles. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic studies. Compounds 1-6 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Among them, three compounds 1-3 showed the significant antioxidative effects on DPPH, and riboflavin originated superoxide quenching activity. In riboflavin-nitrobluetetrazolium (NBT)-light system, compound 1 showed better superoxide quenching activity than vitamin C.

  • Anatomical characters of the trunk woods of Theaceae, including six genera and seven species collected in Korea, were studied to elucidate the relationship among the genera of the family. Among three genera in Ternstoemieae, Eurya is the least specialized, and Cleyera is less specialized than Ternstroemia in respect to the specialization of the perforation plate and the ray. In Theoieae consisting of three genera, the most primitive one is Thea, and Camellia is more primitive than Stewartia in the trive, from the view of the bar arrangement in scalariform perforation plate and the angle of end wall to the vessel axis. The specialization of the perforation plate of vessel element suggests that Theoieae is more advanced group than Ternstroemieae.

  • Jacaranone and related compounds (1-3) were isolated, along with three triterpenes (4-6), from the fresh fruits of Ternstroemia japonica. The compounds were identified as jacaranone (1), 3-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrojacaranone (2), 3-methoxy-2,3-dihydrojacaranone (3), 3-O-acetyloleanolic acid (4), 3-O-acetylursolic acid (5), and ursolic acid (6). Jacaranone and its derivatives were isolated for the first time from Theaceae. Of the isolated compounds, compound 3 is a new compound. Jacaranone (1) exhibited weak antioxidative effect on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical.

  • Two new species of Camellia (Theaceae) are described from Vietnam: Camellia vuquangensis Luong, Tran & L. T. Nguyen and Camellia hatinhensis Luong, Tran & L. T. Nguyen. The new taxa were collected from Vu Quang National Park in the center of Vietnam. The new finds are morphologically dissimilar to all known Camellia species. Recent Camellia discoveries have increased the number of species recorded in Vietnam from 50 to 75, making Vietnam a center of diversity and a crucial area for more research into the diversity and distributions of Camellia.
