Analysis and Design of a PFC AC-DC Converter with Electrical Isolation

  • This study presents a single-phase power factor correction AC-DC converter that operates in discontinuous conduction mode. This converter uses the pulse-width modulation technique to achieve almost unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion of input current for universal input voltage $90V_{rms}$ to $264V_{rms}$) applications. The converter has a simple structure and electrical isolation. The magnetizing-inductor energy of the transformer can be recycled to the output without an additional third winding. The steady-state analysis of voltage gain and boundary operating conditions are discussed in detail. Finally, experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

  • This paper proposes a novel control method to minimize conduction losses of dual active bridge (DAB) converters for on-board chargers of electric vehicles (EVs). In the control method, two variables are regulated, which are the phase-shift angle between the primary and secondary full bridges and the switching frequency. From time-domain analysis, an optimal phase-shift angle is derived to achieve the minimum RMS value of the transformer current. The proposed method was implemented for a 3.6-kW SiC-based prototype to validate its effectiveness. A high efficiency over 97.3% has been achieved for a wide output voltage range.

  • The existing (q)Z-source PWM AC-AC converters have limited voltage gain because of the equivalent series resistance in the Z-source inductor. In order to obtain higher voltage gain than (q)Z-source AC-AC converters, a coupled inductor (or transformer) based Z-source AC-AC converter is proposed in this paper. By increasing turns ratio of the coupled inductor more than 1, the proposed converter can obtain higher output voltage than (q)Z-source converters with the same duty ratio. A 120 W prototype AC-AC converter is built and tested to verify performances of the proposed converter.

  • Transformers together with all equipment and accessories shall be designed and constructed to withstand the mechanical and thermal stresses produced by external short circuit which include three phase, single line-to-ground, double line-to-ground and line-to-line faults etc. Generally the Short Circuit Test of transformers is tested according to the ANSI/IEEE, IEC/JEC, KS etc, in domestic. In this study, it will be showed and compared the difference of symmetrical current for short circuit test of a Pad -mounted transformer according to with ANSI /IEEE and IEC.

  • The proposed dual-output DC-DC converter that bases on flyback converter can obtain two output voltage with non-isolated main-output and isolated sub-output at the same time using single-winding high frequency transformer. It can solve problems in multi-winding converter that use one main-switch, and also control quality of isolated sub-output voltage can be improved by additional sub-switch to the second. For analysis and design of the proposed converter system, converters are classified as operation mode from switching state and are become modeling by applying state space averaging method. Steady-state characteristics and dynamic characteristics are analyzed by DC component and perturbation component from state space averaging model. From experiment converter, validity of analysis and design for the propose converter system is confirm.

  • This paper describes the test results of the single phase 3kVA high temperature superconducting power trans-former. The tapes are made with Bi-2223 and have silver alloy as the matrix. Four double pancake windings are used in total. Among them two double pancake windings are connected in series for high voltage winding and two double pancake windings are connected in parallel for low voltage winding. The rated voltages of each winding are 220/110 V. Fundamental characteristics are obtained through short circuit and no load tests. The over load capability and characteristics are investigated.

  • D-STATCON using the multilevel voltage source inverters is presented for voltage regulation and reactive power compensation in distribution system. This cascade M-level inverter consists of (M-1)/2 single phase full bridge inverter(FBI). This multilevel inverter is a natural fit to the flexible ac transmission systems(FACTS) including STATCON, SVC, series compensation and phase shifting, It can solve the problems of conventional transformer-based multipulse inverters and multilevel diode-clamped inverters. From the simulation results, the superiority of D-STATCON with cascade multilevel inverter is shown for high power application.

  • In this paper, a novel scheme to eliminate common-mode voltage (CMV) is proposed for three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) inverters. In the proposed scheme, a low-power full-bridge converter is utilized to produce compensatory voltage for CMV, which is injected into an NPC inverter through a single-phase four-winding transformer. With the proposed circuit, the power range for applications is not limited, and the maximum modulation index of the inverter is not reduced. These features are suitable for high-power medium-voltage machine drives. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • To reduce harmonics in the AC line and achieve a unit power factor, A 4 paralled single phase PWM AC/DC converter has been proposed. In this paper, the coupling components are derived analytically from PWM converter input transformer model and control scheme to solve this problem is proposed. Unit power factor was obtained and the AC-side current harmonics were reduced. Simulation results show the usefulness of the proposed method and applicability to PWM converter in auxiliary block of high speed train.

  • This paper deals with a 300kV dc charging system to be used ?s a voltage source in a circuit breaker synthetic short-circuit-test facility. Cockcroft-walton circuit is used to step up the rectified voltage from a single phase transformer of which primary winding is hooked up to an ac220 wall plug. Two systems with the same ratings have been designed and manufactured. The two system have been made of different supporting structure with different insulating materials. The paper describes a couple of charging schemes, system configurations and the synthetic test circuit in which the developed system is to be used.
