  • In empirical software engineering research, there is an increased use of questionnaires and surveys to collect information from practitioners. Typically, such data is then analyzed based on overall, descriptive statistics. Overall, they consider the whole survey population as a single group with some sampling techniques to extract varieties. In some cases, the population is also partitioned into sub-groups based on some background information. However, this does not reveal opinion diversity properly as similar opinions can exist in different segments of the population, whereas people within the same group might have different opinions. Even though existing approach can capture the general trends there is a risk that the opinions of different sub-groups are lost. The problem becomes more complex in case of longitudinal studies where minority opinions might fade or resolute over time. Survey based longitudinal data may have some potential patterns which can be extracted through a clustering process. It may reveal new information and attract attention to alternative perspectives. We suggest using a data mining approach to finding the diversity among the different groups in longitudinal studies (agile skeptics). In our study, we show that diversity can be revealed and tracked over time with the use of clustering approach, and the minorities have an opportunity to be heard.

  • Through Web 2.0 days, the end users express their opinions and thoughts for blogs and community spaces on the Internet. These opinions and thoughts are used to purchase products, however, users only refer to a few comments not overall opinions. Opinion Analysis System is an opinion search, developed from a natural language search, which analyzes the product's positive or negative evaluations using opinions of products and services on the Internet. In this paper, we suggest a syntactic analysis and inverse processing system that studies and processes 'Positive', 'Negative', 'Neutral' in addition to 'Inverse' information to analyze 'positive' or 'negative' for the core of sentences in Opinion Analysis Service.

  • Recently, many users frequently share their opinions on diverse issues using various social media. Therefore, many governments have attempted to establish or improve national policies according to the public opinions captured from the various social media. In this paper, we indicate several limitations of traditional approaches for analyzing public opinions about science and technology and provide an alternative methodology to overcome the limitations. First of all, we distinguish science and technology analysis phase and social issue analysis phase to reflect the fact that public opinion can be formed only when a certain science and technology is applied to a specific social issue. Next, we apply a start list and a stop list successively to acquire clarified and interesting results. Finally, to identify most appropriate documents fitting to a given subject, we develop a new concept of logical filter that consists of not only mere keywords but also a logical relationship among keywords. This study then analyzes the possibilities for the practical use of the proposed methodology thorough its application to discovering core issues and public opinions from 1,700,886 documents comprising SNS, blog, news, and discussion.

  • Opinion Mining summarizes with classifying sensitive opinions of customers in huge online customer reviews for the attributes of products or services by positive and negative opinions. Because the customers represent their interests through subjective opinions as well as objective facts, the existing opinion mining techniques, which can analyze just the sensitive opinions, need to be expanded.. In this paper, We propose the novel entity association network model which expands the existing opinion mining techniques. The entity association model can not only represent positive and negative degree of the sensitive opinions, but also can represent the degree of the associations and relative importances between entities. We designed and implemented the customer reviews analysis system based on the entity association network model. We recognized that the system can represent more abundant information than the existing opinion mining techniques.
