  • The objective of this study is to investigate the removal efficiency of volitile organic compounds in soil, and the mechanism of desorption by bench scale microwave heating, Silt soil used for experiment and was impregnated with toluene, tetrachloroethylene, o-xylene and p-dichlorobenzene and the microwave treatment was conducted in a modified domestic microwave oven : 2450MHz, 700W. According to the results of the research the removal efficiency was improved with increasing water contents and the soil temperature appeared to plateau period extending to 2-3minutes corresponds to the temperature a which steam distillation was expected. The value of removal rate constant (k) were calculated on dry and moisty silt soil, respectively, which showed linear with increasing microwave heating time. Therefore, addition of a certain amount of water to the contaminated soil can efficiently enhance the ability of the soil to absorb microwave energy and promote the evaporation of the volitile contaminants.

  • It is necessary to assess soil physical properties and crop growth treated by compaction to establish the soil management standard. This study evaluated the bulk density, strength and crop growth after subsoil compaction for sandy loam and loam on the field in Suwon, Korea. The treatments were compaction and deep tillage. Sandy loam and loam were classified to coarse soil and fine soil, respectively, depending on clay contents. In coarse soil, bulk density of compacted plot was 8~17% greater than control and deep tilled plot. The root growth was worse in compacted plot compared with control. In fine soil, plow pan was not observed in deep tilled plot with 5~19% smaller bulk density than compacted plot and control. Deep tillage improved the crop growth. The soil physical properties by compaction were dependent on clay content and crop growth limit depended on the traffic driving.

  • In this study, the applicability of currently used pipeline.soil interaction force and previously proposed analytical relationship for the response analysis of buried pipeline subjected to transverse permanent ground deformation (PGD) due to liquefaction is evaluated. Based on meaningful contemplation, the improvement of interaction force and proposition of analytical relationship is made. Improved interaction force includes various patterns of PGD or spatial distributions of interaction force caused by the decrease of soil stiffness, and proposed relationship based on improved formula is applicable without regard to the width of PGD. Through the comparison of numerical results by use of commercial FEM program, the rational applicability of proposed relationship is objectively confirmed.

  • A single rigid footing constructed on sandy-clay soil was modeled and analyzed using FLAC software under static conditions and vertical ground motion using three accelerograms. Dynamic analysis was repeated by changing the elastic and plastic parameters of the soil by changing the percentage of cement grouting (2, 4 and 6 %). The load-settlement curves were plotted and their bearing capacities compared under different conditions. Vertical settlement contours and time histories of settlement were plotted and analyzed for treated and untreated soil for the different percentages of cement. The results demonstrate that adding 2, 4 and 6 % of cement under specific conditions increased the dynamic bearing capacity 2.7, 4.2 and 7.0 times, respectively.

  • In the early 1990s, it was first introduced the soil nailing method for the slope stability and ground excavation and widely used as method of reinforcement. Also the application of soil nailing has been improved and developed. Most recently used for grout soil nailing greatly improve the methods and techniques for self-improvement techniques are classified as soil nailing. As the representative for the grout pressure method to improve the join method pressure grouting and improved method for the self-drilled soil nailing, removable soil nailing, extension grout method. Three dimensional finite difference analysis was used to evaluate characteristics of pull-out behavior of extension grout method. In this paper, it was described a characteristics of pull-out behavior of soil nailing with extension grout method through the result of numerical method.

  • Background: For understanding and evaluating a more realistic and accurate assessment of ecosystem carbon balance related with environmental change or difference, it is necessary to analyze the various interrelationships between soil respiration and environmental factors. However, the soil temperature is mainly used for gap filling and estimation of soil respiration (Rs) under environmental change. Under the fact that changes in precipitation patterns due to climate change are expected, the effects of soil moisture content (SMC) on soil respiration have not been well studied relative to soil temperature. In this study, we attempt to analyze relationship between precipitation and soil respiration in temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest for 2 years in Gwangneung. Results: The average soil temperature (Ts) measured at a depth of 5 cm during the full study period was $12.0^{\circ}C$. The minimum value for monthly Ts was $-0.4^{\circ}C$ in February 2015 and $2.0^{\circ}C$ in January 2016. The maximum monthly Ts was $23.6^{\circ}C$ in August in both years. In 2015, annual precipitation was 823.4 mm and it was 1003.8 mm in 2016. The amount of precipitation increased by 21.9% in 2016 compared to 2015, but in 2015, it rained for 8 days more than in 2016. In 2015, the pattern of low precipitation was continuously shown, and there was a long dry period as well as a period of concentrated precipitation in 2016. 473.7 mm of precipitation, which accounted for about 51.8% of the precipitation during study period, was concentrated during summer (June to August) in 2016. The maximum values of daily Rs in both years were observed on the day when precipitation of 20 mm or more. From this, the maximum Rs value in 2015 was $784.3mg\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ in July when 26.8 mm of daily precipitation was measured. The maximum was $913.6mg\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ in August in 2016, when 23.8 mm of daily precipitation was measured. Rs on a rainy day was 1.5~1.6 times higher than it without precipitation. Consequently, the annual Rs in 2016 was about 12% higher than it was in 2015. It was shown a result of a 14% increase in summer precipitation from 2015. Conclusions: In this study, it was concluded that the precipitation pattern has a great effect on soil respiration. We confirmed that short-term but intense precipitation suppressed soil respiration due to a rapid increase in soil moisture, while sustained and adequate precipitation activated Rs. In especially, it is very important role on Rs in potential activating period such as summer high temperature season. Therefore, the accuracy of the calculated values by functional equation can be improved by considering the precipitation in addition to the soil temperature applied as the main factor for long-term prediction of soil respiration. In addition to this, we believe that the accuracy can be further improved by introducing an estimation equation based on seasonal temperature and soil moisture.

  • PFA(Paper Fly Ash) are reclaimed mainly or used in cement industry field as mixture agent in terms of materials recycling. Recently, research for recycling PFA as embankment materials or soil stabilization agent are undergoing in geotechnical engineering field. In this study, physical characteristics of PFA stabilization agent-soil admixtures are examined in change of water content, void ratio, consistency, grain distribution, specific gravity and density. Futhermore, the physical characteristics are compared with unconfined strength as engineering characteristics. Test results showed that unconfined strength and density are increased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. On the other hand, specific gravity, void ratio and water content are decreased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. It would be concluded that natural high water content ratio weak soil could be highly improved engineering and physical characteristics with PFA stabilization agent

  • In this paper, the finite element method is applied to investigate the effect of the lateral boundary in homogenous soil on the seismic response of a superstructure. Some influencing factors are presented and discussed, and several parameters are identified to be important for conducting soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking tables. Numerical results show that the cross-section width L, thickness H, wave propagation velocity and lateral boundaries of soil layer have certain influences on the computational accuracy. The dimensionless parameter L/H is the most significant one among the influencing factors. In other words, a greater depth of soil layer near the foundation should be considered in shaking table tests as the thickness of the soil layer increases, which can be regarded as a linear relationship approximately. It is also found that the wave propagation velocity in soil layer affects the numerical accuracy and it is suggested to consider a greater depth of the soil layer as the wave propagation velocity increases. A numerical study on a soil-structure experimental model with a rubber ring surrounding the soil on a shaking table is also conducted. It is found the rubber ring has great effect on the soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking table. The experimental precision can be improved by reasonably choosing the elastic parameter and width of the rubber ring.

  • There is the freezing method as one of the ground improvement methods for excavating an underground tunnel, and due to its improved reliability, recently construction cases of applying this method into sandy soil grounds as well as cohesive soil grounds of cities have been reported. But, applying the freezing method into cohesive soil grounds could bring concerns of the expansion of the whole ground and the settlements from thawing of ground. In this study, the deformation strength characteristics of cohesive soil which received freezing and thawing hysteresis were examined using the sample collected from the site of cohesive soil ground applied with the freezing method and its structural characteristics were analyzed using an electronic microscope. And, the test with cohesive soil reconstituted from cohesive soil which received freezing and thawing hysteresis was carried out and its result was analyzed comparatively. The result of this test showed that the structure of natural clay was significantly changed due to freezing and thawing hysteresis.
