A Study on the Scientific Attitudes and Degree of Satisfaction about School Science Lessons of Science Gifted and General Students in Elementary School (초등 과학영재와 일반학생의 과학적 태도와 과학수업 만족도 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare scientific attitude and degree of satisfaction for school science lessons between science-gifted and general elementary school students. The results of analysis are as follows : 1. Scientific attitude of both groups appeared to be above average and especially science-gifted students demonstrated higher level of scientific attitude in all area. The characteristics of science-gifted tenacity, high motivation, and creativity are demonstrated in their scientific attitudes. 2. Degree of satisfaction about school science lesson for both groups was above average while science-gifted students showed higher degree of satisfaction than general students. 3. Correlation of scientific attitude and science lessons between science-gifted and general students were relatively low. Scientific attitude of science-gifted students are more dependent on other variables than those of science lessons.

A Comparison of the Overexcitabilities in Gifted and Non-gifted Students, Gender, and School Levels (영재학생과 일반학생의 과흥분성 비교 및 영재의 성별, 학교 급별에 따른 차이 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the 5 OEs of Korean gifted elementary and middle school students and non-gifted, and to find out the gender differences and level of school differences to clarify the possibility of identification instrument of giftedness based on the 5 OEs as the affective factor of giftedness. Total subjects were 270 in this study. Among them, gifted group were 74, and non-gifted group were 196. Boys were 202, and girls were 168. Elementary students were 34, middle school students were 40 within the gifted group. OEQII (Kim, 2008) were modified and used for elementary students. The result of this study were as follows. First, the level of 5 OEs of gifted students was significantly higher than non-gifted students. Second, gender differences were found. Total OEs and sensory OE and emotional OE of girls were significantly higher than boys'. Third, there were significant interaction effects among gifted and non-gifted and gender factor in total OEs and psychomotor OE and sensory OE. Fourth, there was no significantly differences of 5 OEs between elementary and middle school gifted students, which may be interpreted that OEs were consistent affective factors of giftedness. OEs were discussed as the possibility of identification instrument of giftedness.

The Influence of Mothers' Characteristics on the Creativity of Gifted and Non-gifted Preschool Children (어머니의 특성이 영재유아와 일반유아의 창의성에 미치는 영향)

  • Maternal personality, creative personality, and parenting self-efficacy were included in mothers' characteristics. Participants were 89 gifted and 147 non-gifted preschool children and their mothers. Instruments were the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking(Torrance, 1984; 김영채, 2002), Revised NEO-Personality Inventory(Costa & MaCrae, 1992), What Kind of Person Are You Scale of the Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory(Khatena & Torrance, 1976; 김영채, 2004), and Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale(최형성 & 정옥분, 2001). Results showed Disciplined Imagination of gifted preschoolers' mothers influenced children's Abstractness of Creativity, General Parenting Ability influenced Originality of Creativity, and Learning Guidance Ability influenced Abstractness of Titles of Creativity. Regarding non-gifted children, the Neuroticism, Acceptance of Authority and General Parenting Ability of mothers selectively influenced children's Abstractness and Elaborativeness of Creativity.

Analysis of ICT Usage for Gifted Elementary Students in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Science Field (초등 정보과학 및 수과학 분야 영재학생들의 ICT 활용실태 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate patterns of IT usage in gifted elementary students. There were 67 Computer Science gifted students and 38 Math/Science gifted students, a total of 105 students, who attended a Convergence Computer Science Camp for 3 days. They were given 20 questions on IT usage. The results showed that these gifted students started to use the computer from ages 7 to 9 (51.9%) and consider their level of usage as average (50.0%). They also expressed a desire to learn more to enhance learning. There were some differences between the Computer Science gifted students and Math/Science gifted students. The Computer Science gifted students spent more time at the computer, considered themselves as more capable in using the computer, and thought that the computer aided in learning more, Another difference is that Computer Science gifted students utilized the computer more for education and learning purposes(56.9%), whereas Math/Science gifted students used it for recreation purposes (40.5%). Furthermore, regarding areas of further interest, most Computer Science gifted students wanted to learn more about computer programming whereas Math/Science gifted students were more interested in learning presentation methods (26.3%). In conclusion, there was a difference between Computer Science gifted students and Math/Science gifted students in self-confidence, areas of utilization and computer related areas.

  • Most middle school and high school students learns under the same study plans and educational courses. Such an equal level education policies prevent the science-gifted from developing and promoting their ability. So it is severely necessary to sort out the gifted in science and make them develop their ability. In this paper, the attitudes of teachers and parents toward the science-gifted student in middle school were investigated as well as the characteristics of the gifted. One hundred science teachers of middle school who recommended the gifted in science and their parents in Seoul area were questionnaired. The follows are the consequences of investigation. 1. Most teachers and parents of the gifted considered that the school should do a special care for the gifted in science. That is, they prefer the enrichment course to the acceleration course for it. 2. The teachers play the role of motivating the study and promotion very well, but do not well as either the advisor or the cooperator with the parents because of their excessive work and lack of professional knowledgement about education of the gifted. 3. The parents play the role of the advisor or the counselor well, but do not well as the cooperator with school. 4. Among the characteristics of the gifted, there are not any differences between boys and girls in conduct characteristics. But there are meaningful difference in emotion characteristics. 5. The education of the gifted is very important for developing of country and personal promotion. So the administrative and financial support are necessary in order to sort out the gifted in science earlier and provide various programs.

Concerns of Parents of Gifted Children (영재아 부모들의 고민 유형 분석)

  • In this study concerns of parents of gifted children were analyzed. More specifically, this study attempted to classify concerns of parents of gifted children into categories and prioritize concerns in terms of frequency parent indicated. Fifty-two parents whose children are gifted participated in this study and completed open-ended questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using content analysis and frequency analysis. The results of this study revealed that concerns of parents of gifted children were classified into six categories and sixteen subcategories, and personal trait among six categories was most frequently indicated by parents. The implications of these results for educational and counseling practice were discussed with several limitations of this research and suggestions for future research were made.

The Relationship between the Creativity and Motivation of Scientifically Gifted Students (과학영재아동의 창의성과 동기와의 관계 -전라북도 과학영재교육원 영재아동을 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship creativity and motivation. The subjects were 297 gifted students, selected in the examination for entrance to the Science Education Institute for the Gifted located Jeonbuk. To compare the gifted students' creativity and motivation with the normal students', this study used the standardized test, the Creativity Inventory for Students(by Choi & Lee, 2004) and Multi-Dimensional Learning Strategy Test(by Park, 2006). The major results of this study were as follows; First, The gifted students group was high group in the creativity, and especially the gifted girls were significantly higher than the gifted boys. Second, learning motivation of the gifted students were high or than the normal students and the gifted students were inclined to cope actively to challenge situation rather than avoid. Third, The Creativity showed the positive relationship with learning motivation, the negative relationship with avoid motivation, and moderate relationship with competitive motivation. This result suggested that it is very important to encourage gifted students to the intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic motivation like competition or achievement in education.

A Comparative Study on Primary Gifted Education Systems in Korea and China (한국과 중국의 초등영재교육의 분석 및 고찰)

  • This study was carried out to analyze primary gifted education systems in Korea and China. The results of the research are as follows : (1) The objectives of the gifted children education of two countries are same. They intend to dig out hidden talent and giftedness of gifted children. They emphasize the development of creativity in the gifted children through the various special teaching methods. (2) Korea has been doing the gifted education limitedly focused on the 4th grade students in elementary school after regular school curriculum, but China has performed gifted education from primary school to university quite systematically. (3) Korea tend to select the students based on the objective sources such as teachers' observation, recommendation, school scores, but this has limit to find out the real potential genius. China has the similar problems, but they consider of the comprehensive talented and abilities in students at school unit level. (4) Both countries have the teacher training systems for study to make more efficient programs and methods in gited education. It has been emphasized the necessity of gifted education to expand the range and target. Most of all it is very essential to train the teachers to manipulate the gifted education programs. The government should be persue the multiplicity and professionality now. So there are so many things to learn from China since they managed the gifted education in a regular curriculum of the school.

Development of Web-based Education Program for the Gifted in Mathematics (웹기반 원격 수학영재교육 학습자료 개발)

  • There have been tremendous needs and requirements of special education for the gifted to the level of country development and for developing their talents. Even though a lot of research has been done on special education for the gifted supported by the government, lack of educational materials and material development has been a main concern. Some trails using the web with the help of information technology have been made on distance education and resulted good effect on education. No application using a web-based educational method has been made on special education for the gifted so far. This paper describes about the web-based special education for the gifted on mathematics. The discussed topics are development of educational materials, compliments of the current educational materials in mathematics being used at the KIGES(Kyungnam Institute of the Gifted Education in Science), and the continuation of special education for the gifted. Furthermore, a better and more efficient way is suggested for special education for the gifted that has been limited by geographic and locational restrictions.
