This research has a significant meaning to observe and understand the historical condition of a furniture industry and the characteristics of Korean home furniture's formation, ability, skill and materials from 1980s when there were an economic growth and a historical development of Korean home furniture occurred to present days. During 1980s, there was an automatic system available and has enforced and settled the standards on its quality and price in a furniture industry. Also, there was a big trend of black furniture as well as an entrance of corporation and high glossy furniture due to technical cooperation from Europe. In 1990s, there was an entrance of furniture which various techniques was applied due to a high development of the materials and skills, and also various sizes of height and weight and enlargement of acceptance function using highly-technological hardware. After 2000 and now, pro-environmental products is embossed in the Korean home furniture where they added a public issue which is the concept of well being, and A.I and sub material has been pro-environment. There also was a natural unity between nature and technology because of increased usage of trees with its natural patterns, metals, and glasses. For the future development of home furniture design, This problem should be promptly recognized that current home furniture designs are now on the verge of being lack of originality and are just following the market demand and recent trend as it is. Then, there should be a development of its specialized, detailed, unique design as well as a development of advanced materials, production management, distribution, and so on, and carrying out a diversified research continuously. There also should be a systematic education, which is necessary for training specialists to lead the Korean home furniture design industry as well as preparing a basic level for the future without a negligence.
This research has dual purposes. First, it was designed to determine the level of children's spatial environment in the residences, thereby, to make a vision for children's furniture as an industrial design product. Second, it was intened to find out the children's perceptual pattern toward the furniture, thereby to give some implications for future design development. For the second purpose, descriptors were screened with construct validity and their factor structure was identified. The subjects were 1,197 children from 1st grade of elemantary school through 3rd grade of middle school, and their 1,197 parents for the first purpose, and 560 children from 6th grades of elemantary school and 3rd grade of middle school for the second purpose. The first parts of findings were 1) present interests of parents of household above middle income level in Seoul in making their children's spatial environment desirable is quite high. 2) Space segregation stage in terms of physical and conceptual aspects showed very fast development, that is, there will have been very good changes for children's room to be a very well furnished and independent space for them. 3) Children's opinions were quite well reflected when purchasing the present furniture, and this tendency seemed to be more likely happend in future. These findings mentioned above gave and confirmed the visions for future children's furnished environment. The second parts of findings were such that the perceptual pattern for furniture by children showed aesthetic design appearance, functionality and durability, and the characteristic of line. This result impliated especially that designers should be every careful to manipulate or use the line of the furniture products. The 22 representative descriptors selected can be used as an evaluation instrument for furniture products.
The future of design relies much on and is only ensured by the fundamental understanding of the dynamics between the ecosystem of nature and that of humans; therefore, having an eco-mind is essential. This study establishes ecological design strategies coinciding with the furniture design process and the furniture product life cycle in production, distribution, and end-of-life. In addition, it provides an overall direction with guidelines for ecological furniture design. The presented strategies focus on the Development of a New Concept; the Optimized Use of Physical Materials-functionality and utility; the Optimized Production; the Optimized Distribution System; and the Optimized End-of-life System. Through taking these steps, we can not only preserve our natural environment and Improve our lives, but also create optimal furniture design which corresponds and integrate with the ecosystem.
The blur phenomenon, in which the boundaries of fields or roles become vague, has become an important concept of design in the 21st century. In furniture design, the physical boundary between furniture and space and that between space and furniture has been broken down and their meaning tends to be redundant. This concept was begun by a variety of furniture designers who led the trends about 30 years ago. A progressive exhibition titled ${\ulcorner}$Living Tomorrow${\lrcorner}$, which was included in the Koln International Mobelmess from 1968 to 1970, showed that the blur phenomenon in furniture design has never actually been novel. These exhibitions and the works exhibited in the events are still recognized as progressive examples that proposed an avant-garde concept of life. They are in line with the current furniture design based on spatial concepts, which has been created by the blur phenomenon. The purposes of this study are to determine the cases of furniture design that enable the so-called spatial functions beyond the simple functions of seating, use, and display, from those of furniture design and to research their characteristics. In this study, furniture based on spatial concepts means furniture that creates 3D spaces consisting of the floor, walls, and ceiling by the blur phenomenon that occurs from the spaces among these pieces of furniture. The organization of this study is as follows; In Chapter 2, a background on the generation of furniture design based on spatial concepts is described based on the research literature of this socio-cultural phenomena. In Chapter 3, the cases of relevant furniture design redescribed. In Chapter 4, the collected cases are analyzed and their characteristics described. In Chapter 5, Chapter 1 to Chapter 4 are summarized and conclusions are given. In addition, future research is proposed.
Increased internet use under a ubiquitous environment may be called as a great human information space revolution followed by Industrial Revolution. This revolution is exerting its significant influence over all the industry as a whole with speed faster than that of any other times. Along with this trend, if furniture design field that leads living culture should fail to jump on this main stream without noticing it, it may be reduced to a unpopular field some day without any sign of recovery. Under this background, this study is intended to recognize a goal aiming at understanding our rapidly changing living environment and leading our way positively. Currently, our surrounding living environment is immersed in computers here and there and Mark Weiser once defined a system that moves in advance before an action as ubiquitous computing and in this respect, I am going to observe a detailed transformation process of space. First nature of the space may be defined as atoms, a physical space equivalent to a spatial element and Bits space that is untouchable is usually called as 2nd space and a combination of atoms and Bits is an intelligent space - 3rd space - that can be intelligible without touching it and finally, this space is called as a ubiquitous space. This spatial transformation is developed by several changes of living environment and we may call it as living trend or interior design trend. Transformation in terms of social perspective, space structural perspective and digital technique perspective may be enumerated. These transformations were surveyed based on its contents being implemented at a future housing exhibition hosted by 5 construction companies along with fusion of information furniture and furniture depending on each housing space. In conclusion, it could be realized that most of the companies were decorating future space by implementing ubiquitous environment as a success factor of future housing market. It may be meaningful to note once again that under an interior environment, a fusion of furniture and information furniture is required considering interior trend elements.
One of the conspicuous changes in kitchens is that kitchen space is more economically constructed than ever before giving more considerations to functionality. At the same time, eco-friendliness begins enjoying more attention for health and well-being reasons. Which is more important between functionality and eco-friendliness is a matter of personal taste and judgement. But eco-friendliness has become one of the more critical criteria for users to choose kitchen furniture. This paper examines the design trends of Contemporary kitchen furniture from the perspective of functionality and eco-friendliness. Results show that, as has been expected, many of kitchen furniture items manufactured by major furniture businesses have been found more functional and more eco-friendly than before the research period. I expect this trend to continue long into the future.
The purpose of this study is to analysis the influence in furniture and interior design of pop design. Pop design is a trend which was in fashion for a short time between 1950s and 1960s. It is an experimental transient form in a flow of postmodernism. Through such a trend, we can analogize an idea and values of people speaking for a rapid change of society and culture chat that time. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to examine what environment of society and culture and what idea had an effect on people at that time. Also, the study will examine how the above had an effect on interior design and furniture design. Considering the above results, the study will examine an influence and meaning of pop design in design history. According to the result of analysis, characteristic of pop design is anti-modern, expendability, future mood.
The purpose of this study was to compare government guidelines and foreign guidelines related to furniture design for elderly. Future elderly will increasingly accustomed to the provisions of improved housing, education and welfare in comparison with our forebears. Also, there will be upgrading and different need for elderly furniture in our market. The results were as follows. The height of bed was based on the height of wheelchair seat, commonly. A adjustable bed was recommended for abled and disabled elderly. A pull-down shelf, drawer, empty space under chest, folding or sliding door in wardrobe and so on were recommended as a elderly furniture. It were good adjustable sink on human scale. There were need the empty space under sink for wheelchair users, one-touch or lever faucet, etc. There have given a little furniture design guidelines for elderly in Korea until now. But those guidelines haven't been considered enough human scale of elderly including wheelchair user. Because the close investigations have not made about abled and disabled elderly for their furniture design. So first of all, the government should be examined elderly physical size more accurately for elderly furniture design. The guideline for elderly furniture design should be for abled elderly and the disabled, too.
This study is intended to forecast changes in Ubiquitous technology-based residential environment since the digital revolution so as to suggest the direction of furniture design in the near future. Among Ubiquitous technologies, the intelligent digital technology applied to a residential environment is defined as "Smart Digital Technology." Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy named the residential environment where such technology is applied "Smart Home." Smart Home is strategically creating intelligent residential environment where interactivity is made between human, furniture and residential environment, based on home automation, home network and intelligent sensor technology. Smart furniture is based on strategic characteristics of smart home. Its convergence with IT equipments is being made. Largely, smart furniture has three characteristics as below: First, smart furniture provides users with information on home management, health management, education and fashion. not just functioning as storage space. Second, smart furniture that is a new lifestyle pattern will suggest a new aesthetic standard based on unsettled shapes and innovative structure. Finally, it gives convenience to users intelligently. Namely, smart furniture, "intelligent informative furniture", will be suggested as a new paradigm.
Increasing concerns of environment need to make change furniture field to more environmentally friendly approach, such as reuse of by-products from wooden products. As it is, the methods of recycling wood for industrial purposes have the advantage of productivity and adaptability. However, the industrial way is required a certain production facility of processing wooden by-products and has possible hygienic problems due to contaminated sources. Many designers have developed their own methods for reuse of wood in unique and artistic ways. Even so, because of confined sources, it could be not enough supply. Therefore, I developed the design methodology utilizing wooden by-products from S Design Company to relieve former ways' problems. The design suggestion took materials from a safe and abundant source. The wooden leftover pieces were connected together with epoxy clay, so previous process traces of furniture are remained as a decorative factor. Moreover, the synthesized material was able to be processed by ordinary woodworking facilities without additional installations. In doing so, console table focused on a commercial purpose and dining table for an artistic objective were successfully fabricated as final suggestions. In consideration of the proposal using wooden furniture leftovers, diverse recycling designs should be investigated for future reference.
