  • A fire disaster is very serious in the closing space like subway station. In this study, the simulation on fire diffusion is performed to get the temperature history curve, which is used for the fire resisting structural analysis. Most of subway stations are built by the reinforced concrete structure, but recently steel structures are selected for the larger space or beauty. Steel structures relatively have more weaknesses against fire, so it is necessary to develop the method for evaluating fire-resisting capacity in this kind of structures. The developed method is applied to the subway station in Daegu city. It shows that the developed method can be used to simulate the fire disaster and to get the temperature history curve and evaluate the safety of steel structures against the fire.

  • This Study is to analyze the characteristics of arson fire under fire dynamics to protect people and property from arson fire which has been radically increased with the development of the Korean economy. Assembly and merchandise purposes such as theater, retail, and exhibition has been performed as the arson fire study. The experiment for this study is based on the analysis of the characteristic for its own combustion process and smoke spread when arson fire occurs. This study presents the analysis through comparing the condition of setting fire using liquid fuel such as thinner on purpose to the condition of setting fire naturally depending on each occupancy.

  • This study intends to raise the fire safety awareness level which the teachers have in infant schools. The results of the study are as follows. The early childhood teachers consider the fire safety awareness level of our society low, though their fire safety awareness level be above the average. The education program for the fire safety is mapped out and the teachers prefer an observation class and a field trip for the program in almost infant schools. The early childhood teachers have difficulty acquiring the knowledge for the field experience and work and getting teaching aids for the fire safety. Therefore the early childhood teachers extremely much desire teaching aids for infants to be developed and diffused.

  • Fire model shall be verified and validated to reliably predict the consequences of fires within its limitations. This study aims to predict pool fire with two rooms using FDS and to coompare FDS simulation results with PRISME experimental data which can be applicable to the fire of nuclear power plant facility. Four different sizes of grid (0.08m, 0.1m, 0.125m, 0.2m) are used in the simulation and the simulated results of specific quantities such as temperature, chemical composition, heat flux and heat release rate are compared to the experimental data. From this study, the FDS simulation results with the finer grid resolution show better similarity and trend with pool fire experimental data. The sensitivity analysis and the selection of the proper size grid are essential to predict the consequences of pool fire with two rooms reliably.

  • The rapid progress toward the 4th industrial society has led to possibilities of fire increase. It is pointed out that, though initial fire suppression is emphasized, the current legal systems do not sufficiently recognize the importance of initial fire suppression. In order to resolve this, problems of the current legal systems and regulations, as well as fire-fighting facilities to be equipped according to the size of specific fire-fighting objects, were diagnosed. Also, suggestions for improvement were provided through comparative analysis with relevant laws and technical regulations of Korea and other countries. According to fire safety standards such as NFPA, IMO, ISO, and Russian standards, automatic fire extinguishers are to be installed as per the adaptability criteria of fire extinguishers and automatic fire extinguishers. In Korea, the "Act on Fire Prevention and Installation, Maintenance, and Safety Control of Fire-fighting Systems" cover the types and scope of fire fighting facilities that include specific fire protection objects, such as electric room, power room, and substation room. This study has identified that, in case of a place with a floor area of less than $300m^2$, the installation requirement is not clearly specified. Therefore, in this study, fire extinguishing equipment and automatic fire extinguishing equipment to be added for each sub-use application are proved to have fire extinguishing performance of Class A, Class B, and Class C, respectively. In view of the fact that, in overseas standards, all space except containing such materials as Deep fire, metal fire and peroxide, can be installed with fire fighting equipment, a legal system for specifying the capacity units of fire fighting apparatus by application is, in this study, proposed.

  • In modern society, buildings has become larger, more complex and high-rise by the influences of locational and environmental characteristics from the changes of human lifestyles. Such features of the buildings, however, make building management and maintenance more difficult, especially in the aspects of health, security, and safety, etc. In order to secure safety and comfort in dwelling, housing, and working condition, it is essential to establish systematic plans and practices. Thus with the aim of investigating general status of fire safety management on specific buildings, this study mainly analyzed fire prevention manager's awareness on their works by conducting a survey, and suggested required systematic improvements for efficient fire safety management. As a result of the survey, it is concluded that introducing the system to appoint fire prevention sub-managers will promote more professional and classified management conditions.

  • Fire model shall be verified and validated to reliably predict the consequences of fires within its limitations. This study aims to predict pool fire phenomena with two rooms using CFAST and to compare CFAST simulation results with PRISME experimental data which can be applicable to the fire of nuclear power plant facility. Five different mass loss rate(MLR) are used in the simulation and the simulated results of specific quantities such as temperature, chemical composition are compared to the experimental data. From this study, the CFAST simulation results with the proper MLR show better similarity and trend with pool fire experimental data.

  • This study was intended to find methods of fire extinguishing system designs that can improve the equipment's usability. In this study, the fire suppression experiment through fire extinguishers and the data drawn through the experiment were analyzed, and then the guideline for the improvement of designs was presented. The procedure is as follows. A fire suppression experiment with the use of fire extinguishers was done by 43 average adults. The whole process of the fire suppression was videotaped, and then captured major scenes were analyzed with the use of RULA, a human engineering measurement tool. The analyzed data were divided into 4 steps, and then the guideline for design improvement was presented. The summary of the study is as follows. Step 1, Fire extinguisher distance step. To reduce overload occurring at the process of holding fire extinguishers suddenly, wheels are attached to the body of extinguishers, or pedestals are installed. Step 2, Fire extinguisher transportation step. The length of hose is extended, or fire fighting water is sprayed far, so that overload of legs occurring at the process of travel can be reduced. In addition, the weight of fire extinguisher shouldn't be over 2 kg. Step 3, Safety pin removal stage. Safety pins should be applied with button type, so that excessive posture of lower limbs and excessive twisting of wrists won't happen during safety pin removal process. Besides, safety pins should be designed for easy identification and operation. Step 4, Fire extinguishing agent spraying step. To reduce overload occurring at sudden spraying of fire fighting water, pressure should be increased gradually until high pressure. With the above study results applied to existing fire extinguisher design, it may contribute to reducing any fire damage.
