The purpose of the present study was to determine the onset of breeding season, the occurrence of silent and true heats and the duration of estrus in female Markhoz goats of the Kurdistan province in Iran. Ten, 3 years-old Markhoz does with an average weight of $34.05{\pm}2.62kg$ and with one kidding record, were used. The goats were maintained in an open barn under constant nutritional levels and natural photoperiod. One aproned buck was used twice a day every 12 h to detect estrus from mid August to early January. For the determination of the onset of reproductive activity as well as occurrence of silent heat, blood samples were collected every 10 days, from the beginning of the experiment. After $2^{nd}$ standing heat, blood samples were obtained twice a week in order to assess luteal activity and the length of estrous cycles. In this study, estrous behavior was observed including sniffing, vocal exchange, following courtship, flehman, standing heat and mounting. The results of the progesterone assay indicated that in this goat silent heats occur mostly in the early breeding season. The first standing heat was observed in mid-October which was considered as the onset of the breeding season. Duration of the estrous cycle and estrus was recorded as being $20.93{\pm}1.56days$ and $38.86{\pm}15.19h$, respectively. The correlation coefficient between length of daylight and occurrence of estrus was negative (r = -0.470) but not significant (p>0.05). The data showed that there was no significant effect of body weight on estrous cycles (first, second and third) and estrous periods (first, second, third and fourth). Progesterone levels were not significantly different in the first, second and third estrous cycles at days 0, 4, 10, 12, 14 and 19. The results of progesterone assay during the estrous cycle indicate that follicular and luteal phases last 4-5 and 14-15 days, respectively and the concentration of serum progesterone in these phases was $0.88{\pm}0.08$ and $7.44{\pm}0.26ng/ml$, respectively. The study concluded that Markhoz does could be considered as a breed with a short breeding season and an optimal estrous activity in autumn.
Purpose: The present study is aimed at examining the drying characteristics of sea tangle through a combination of microwave and far-infrared drying experiment and finding the optimal drying conditions. Methods: Sea tangle was cleaned and cut into fine pieces (5mm) before they were subjected to combinational drying by microwave and far-infrared ray. The amount of specimen per drying is 2 kg. The finely cut pieces of sea tangle were preheated in a microwave dryer for three different lengths of time (10, 15, and 20 min). Subsequently, they were dried using a far-infrared dryer at tow temperatures ($90^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$) at an air velocity of 0.8 m/s until the final moisture content reduced to 10%. Results: Sea tangle dried under the condition of 20 min of preheating in the microwave dryer and drying at $100^{\circ}C$ by the far-infrared dryer. Of the drying models verified in this study, the logarithmic model showed high accuracy with the coefficient of determination $R^2>0.7825$ and RMSE<0.1095. The rehydration ratio of sea tangle was the highest (12.87 g water/g dry matter) under the condition of 15 min of preheating in the microwave dryer and drying at $100^{\circ}C$ by the far-infrared dryer. The energy consumption for the combination of microwave and far-infrared drying was the lowest (4.78 kJ/kg water) under the condition of 20 min of preheating in the microwave dryer and drying at $100^{\circ}C$ by the far-infrared dryer. Conclusions: Considering the drying time, discoloration during drying, rehydration ratio, and energy consumption for the drying of sea tangle, the optimal drying conditions for high-quality sea tangle are 15 min of preheating in a microwave dryer and drying at $100^{\circ}C$ by a far-infrared dryer.
Due to the common dietary practice of preparing foods in various ways using the same food item, in addition to rather a large number of food items that average Koreans consume, it is difficult to accurately assess the nutritional adequacy. In an effort to identify a reliable means of assessing the nutritional adequacy of Korean adults, we analyzed the association between the scores of dietary diversity (DDS) and dietary variety (DVS), and the quality of nutrient intake as assessed by Nutrient Adequacy Ratio (NAR) and Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR). A three day-dietary record was obtained from each of 324 inhabitants, aged 40 to 69 years (mean :t SD,52.4 $\pm$ 8.7), of a rural area (Ansung) and a mid-sized city (Ansan) of Korea. These individuals were randomly selected among the participants of the Korean Health and Genome Study. The number of consumed foods and food groups were assesses by DDS (scored 1 to 5) and DVS (ranked 30 $\leq$,31 - 40, 41 - 50, 51 - 60, and 60 <) over three-day period, respectively. As DDS/DVS increased, mean daily food intakes tended to increase, and NARIMAR was improved. Thus, DDS and DVS were significantly correlated with the quality of nutrient intake. Over 95% of the subjects scored less than 2 in DDS for the first one-day period, whilst over 62% recorded 4 during the full three-day period (p < .0001). The mean number of consumed food items increased from 24.9 to 44.4 as a function of days of the record period (p < .0001). We also analyzed the association of DDS and DVS with MAR, using regression analysis, controlling age and sex as covariates. For DDS, the adjusted coefficient determination (adj $R^2$) values were 8.7%,15.8%,23.3% of MAR, also increasing as a function of the record duration, whereas they were 27.3%, 33.3%, 37.6% for DVS, respectively, demonstrating that NAR/MAR has a better correlation with DVS than DDS. Our data show that DDS, and DVS in particular, are useful parameters for evaluating nutrient intake in the Korean population. Our data also support that one day-dietary records are by no means adequate for accurately describing a wide variety of food choices offered for average Koreans, and that dietary assessment at least for 3 days or longer should be obtained for a reliable evaluation of dietary quality using DDS or DVS.
A rapid, simple and sensitive LC/MS/MS method for the determination of lercanidipine in human serum was validated and applied to the pharmacokinetic study of lercanidipine. Lercanidipine and internal standard, amlodipine, were extracted from human serum by liquid-liquid extraction with hexan-isoamyl alcohol (100: 1, v/v) and analyzed on a $Symmetry^{(R)}$ MS $C_{18}$ column with the mobile phase of acetonitrile-0.2% aqueous formic acid (70: 30, v/v). Using MS/MS with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, lercanidipine and amlodipine were detected without severe interferences from human serum matrix. Lercanidipine produced a protonated precursor ion ($[M+H]^+$) at m/z 612.3 and a corresponding product ion at m/z 280.0. Internal standard produced a protonated precursor ion ($[M+H]^+$]) at m/z 409.0 and a corresponding product ion at m/z 238.0. The ruggedness of this method was investigated using quality control (QC) samples. This method showed linear response over the concentration range of 0.05-20 ng/mL with correlation coefficient greater than 0.999. The lower limit of quantitation using 0.5 mL of serum was 0.05 ng/mL, which was sensitive enough for pharmacokinetic studies. The overall accuracy of the developed method ranged from 85.51 to 112.2% for lercanidipine with overall precision (% C.V.) being 3.56-13.1%. This method showed good ruggedness (within 15% C.V.) and was successfully applied for the analysis of lercanidipine in human serum samples for the pharmacokinetic studies, demonstrating the suitability of the method.
Determining the actual evapotranspiration(ETa) of a crop, and appropriate water management of the crop based on the ETa are very important For increasing the yield. The present study aimed at determining ETa and crop coefficient of sesame growing under different climatic conditions with the transparent thin polyethylene film mulch(0.03 mm thick) and without this mulch. Bottomless cylindrical lysimeters(105cm in diameter, 120cm in height, protruded 20 cm above the soil surface) were installed on the field of sandy loam "Bonyang series" soil with a moderate drainage. The determination of ETa was performed by measuring each component of a model equation, $ETa=(R+I)-\{Ro+(D1+D2)\}+C{\pm}{\Delta}S$. Sesame, cv. "Ansan" was sown in two rows with the spacing of $50{\times}15cm$ on May 10 in 1991 and 1992. The mulching covers 80% of the soil surface. Sesame consumed the water of 139.0 mm(1.53 mm/day) and 171.2 mm(1.59 mm/day) in ETa without the film mulch, but that of 132.6 mm(1.46 mm/day) and 199.8 mm(1.85 mm/day) with its mulching through both years of 1991 and 1992, respectively. The ETa's accounted for 52 and 69% of the potential evapotranspiration(ETp) in the mulched crop, and 54 and 59% of ETp in the non-mulched crop 1991 through 1992, respectively. Its ETa's were much more and their gap between the mulching and non-mulching treatment was larger in 1992 than in 1991 as a result of the better climatic condition of 1992.
This study used response surface methodology (RSM) in an effort to optimize the ultrasoundassisted extraction condition of Camellia sinensis L. and Artemisia argyi mixture in order to increase extraction yield in the extract. The effects of three independent variables, $X_1$ (Mixture ratio, 60-80%), $X_2$ (Ratio of water to raw material, 20~100 mL/g), and $X_3$ (Extraction time, 25-145 min), were investigated at three levels using Box-Behnken design (BBD) to obtain the highest extraction efficiency. Y (Extraction yield) was chosen as dependent variable. Our result showed that the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of the model was 0.9747, with significant at the level of p < 0.002. Furthermore, the predicted values of each variable were similar to the actual values. The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: mixture ratio of 85.86%, ratio of water to raw material of 92.73 mL/g, and extraction time of 56.52 min. At these conditions, predicted extraction yield was 30.03%. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a high goodness of model fit and the success of the RSM method for optimizing extraction conditions of Camellia sinensis L. and Artemisia argyi mixture.

In this paper, we proposed a method for estimating energy expenditure using the unfixed axis of the accelerometer. Most studies adopted waist-placement because of the fact that the waist is close to the center of mass of a whole human body. But we adopted pocket-placement, which is capable of using unfixed axis of sensor, that is more convenient than conventional methods. To evaluate the proposed method, 28 male subjects performed walking and running on a motor driven treadmill. All of subject put on the indirect calorimeter and fixed accelerometer, then data were simultaneously measured during exercise. The regression analysis was performed using the test group(n=20) and the regression equation was applied to the control group(n=8). A strong linear relationship between energy expenditure and unfixed accelerometer signal was found. Futhermore, the coefficient of determination was significantly reliable($R^2$=0.98) and showed zero of p-value. The error of energy expenditure estimation between indirect calorimeter and two types of accelerometer was 15.0%(fixed) and 17.0%(unfixed) respectively. These results show the possibilities that the unfixed accelerometer can be used in estimating the energy expenditure during exercise.
Prediction of growth patterns of commercial chicken strains is important. It can provide visual assessment of growth as function of time and prediction body weight (BW) at a specific age. The aim of current study is to compare the three nonlinear functions (i.e., Logistic, Gompertz, and von Betalanffy) for modeling the growth of twenty five commercial Korean native chicken (KNC) strains reared under a battery cage system until 32 weeks of age and to evaluate the three models with regard to their ability to describe the relationship between BW and age. A clear difference in growth pattern among 25 strains were observed and classified in to the groups according to their growth patterns. The highest and lowest estimated values for asymptotic body weight (C) for 3H and 5W were given by von Bertalanffy and Logistic model 4629.7 g for 2197.8 g respectively. The highest estimated parameter for maturating rate (b) was given by Logistic model 0.249 corresponds to the 2F and lowest in von Bertalanffy model 0.094 for 4Y. According to the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and mean square of error (MSE), Gompertz and von Bertalanffy models were suitable to describe the growth of Korean native chicken. Moreover, von Bertalannfy model was well described the most of KNC growth with biologically meaningful parameter compared to Gompertz model.

Biogenic amines have been used as chemical indicators of fermented foods. So far, several chromatography methods have been developed to detect biogenic amines in foods. However, few methods have identified these compound in domestic cheese. We analyzed the biogenic amines (histamine dihydrochloride, tyramine hydrochloride, ${\beta}$-phenylethylamine hydrochloride, putrescine dihydrochloride, cadaverine, spermidine, tryptamine hydrochloride, ethanolamine hydrochloride and butylamine) in cheese by using HPLC. The calibration curves of the biogenic amines were found to be linear over the concentration range of 10-50 ppm with a correlation coefficient of above 0.99. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the biogenic amines in the given order were 3.7 and 11.3 ppm, 3.4 and 10.4ppm, 3.4 and 10.3 ppm, 4.0 and 12.2 ppm, 3.4 and 10.4 ppm, 3.4 and 10.5 ppm, 3.5 and 10.7 ppm, 4.1 and 12.5 ppm, and 3.4 and 10.4 ppm, respectively. Recovery rates of the biogenic amines in the given order were 112, 104, 93, 108, 91, 102, 101, and 92%, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that HPLC is a suitable method for the determination of biogenic amines, thereby indicating its potential application in the quality control of aging cheese.

This study was designed to investigate the formation of ethyl carbamate (EC) during the ripening of Maesil with sugar and Soju (19.5~35% alcohol contents) using a homemade method. Maesil, sugar and Soju were purchased at ordinary market in June of 2012. The preparation of sample for analysis was conducted by method of Henry et al. The analysis of GC/MS was used SIM mode (m/z 89, 74, 62). Quantification was performed in terms of the 62 ion and was based on an internal standard procedure. Good linearity was obtained with a regression coefficient ($r^2$ = 0.993). Low detection limits (LOD) was achieved 4.31 ug/kg and recovery for alcohol was 74.8%. During 90 days, fermentation with sugar was not detected EC (under LOQ). 15 days ripened Maesil wine contained EC between non detected~32.7 ug/kg and 90 days ripened Maesil wine was 19.7~87.4 ug/kg. Higher proportion of Maesil and Soju increased EC contents. EC levels were increased 32.7 ug/kg to 87.4 ug/kg in the ratio of Maesil to 35% alcohol-Soju (1:1). In the ratio of Maesil to 35% alcohol-Soju (1:3) was increased non detected to 69.7 ug/kg. After 90 days, Maesil wine was filtered Maesil through a seive and ripened by 180 days to investigate the formation of EC compared with non filtered. Treatment of filtered, EC contents was much higher level compared with non filtered. Therefore, this result showed that alcohol contents contribute to increase EC formation more than Maesil.
